    To anyone reading this and trying the 30 day challenge, I highly recommend not switching the tv back on, it's a trap. It's not designed for moderation. I've tried slowing down and limiting me and my kids, it won't work the vast majority of the time. I'm sure there's going to be someone who will find the balance but it's rare. Me amd my family of 5 quite cold turkey after multiple attempts at moderating it and it's been a life changer. Yes I'm on KZread right now, but I have a rule, and it is if I'm working I can listen to audio books or KZread videos, as long as I'm doing something productive, and it's a challenge in and of itself. No joke, I made almost 4000$ selling all my tvs, game systems and accessories.

    I was in the same place as you. Here is my experience..... Giving up KZread (watching not creating) literally changed my life for the better in the 10 days I run the experiment. I had zero brain fog and I started to think about things differently. I spent on average 6 to 10 hours a day on KZread. Things such as eating became more enjoyable and I could actually taste food...Whereas before I would just eat and focus on watching KZread and not really take into account the flavors etc (bad example I know). I also noticed that social anxiety was reduced when I stopped watching KZread. Correlation does not imply causation but I felt different and I can't really put it into words. I'm not doing a good job of selling this haha but honestly that small amount of time was the best time in terms of work and enjoyment I've had in a long time. I'm on holiday now but in a few days I will be cutting it out for good. I honestly recommend it if you are looking to get to that next level in your life.

    After noticing that I had a serious streaming addiction, i started a light version of this, cutting out everything in English and German (my native language), watching stuff only in one of the 4 languages I focus on learning right now, with subtitles in only that language. That helped me not only to improve the languages but also reducing my screen time, as it's much more exhausting and, especially in the beginning, not that entertaining. The time I'm saving I put into reading, exercising, writing, and more language learning. Also my day is way more structured now. I

    @@TylerLloyd Ah I had a similar situation and our compromise was only watching shows in their original language together, no matter which one. As almost all international shows are dubbed here in Germany, this was a pretty big step for my roommates. Right now my languages are French, Japanese, Italian and Swedish. I guess my French is on a level where listening/immersion is the right next step to reach fluency. Japanese & Italian I've been learning for 2 years, so there's a lot of looking up words involved. Swedish is pretty new, but the similarities to German are super helpful. Having matching subtitles is great in any language, which rules out dubbed shows, as dub and sub usually are very different. It's super hard and annoying sometimes, but little results are motivating. I really hope I can keep it up. I see so many great side effects at learning languages, getting to know my own language better, getting a better understanding on cultures, actively learning something and improving every day. How did you learn French? Do you have any advice on language learning? I think a video about that would be awesome.

  • @TylerLloyd

    @TylerLloyd

    I learned French the easy but most stressful way: full immersion with no option to speak English. I lived and worked in Burkina Faso, in a remote village, as part of the US Peace Corps. It was an amazing experience. While I had studied Latin in school, I had never spoken an other language other than English. I actually considered myself to be bad at learning languages. Yet, when you have no other option to communicate or express yourself, the learning happens quickly. My French is still a bit crude, but it was good enough to form lasting friendships.

    my problem is that I follow these twitch streamers right? and they’re super active across a lot of social medias (youtube, twitter, reddit, twitch) and have a lot of inside jokes, and it’s gotten to the point where i’m scared of missing out. but you’re absolutely right because my fear of missing out on these parasocial relationships made me miss out on real things like time with family and time to myself in general I’m pretty sure I failed my calculus exam because of this and it’s not only that (though it’s my most prominent problem) I’m really bad about limiting myself and prioritizing because i go through these little obsessive bursts wether it be music, drawing, reading, writing or consuming content (duh) and once I start I find it really hard to stop until eventually, I do and then I just move on to the next thing until I get tired of it and the cycle continues. Stopping “artificially” is really hard I guess i’m asking if you have any tips. Because I watch all these videos where people just stop something but it’s so HARD. maybe i’m just weak willed teen idk

    I think it really helps to replace one thing with another. Like, whenever you feel like watching stuff or scrolling tiktok, read a book instead or go for a walk with a podcast. If you aren't into books already it seems hard, but reading can be super exciting once you found the right kind of book. And once you got in that world that's so much more versatile and exciting than anything else, you won't regret it. I'm seriously addicted to Netflix and those two things helped me to limit that time immensely. (Also i cut out everything English on Netflix, which makes it just another language learning tool right now). Also, if you don't have one, buy a wristwatch. Checking the time is my #1 entrance to spending time on the phone. I still can't believe how much phone screen that has saved me.

    Definitely it’s hard for all of us. I imagine it’s a dopamine thing, so adding in dopamine activities throughout the day helps lower cravings/exhaustion later. Things like walking outside, drinking tea and relaxing, reading, petting an animal, time with a friend, for me things like putting music on and dancing, putting lotion on, painting nails, bath, gardening, cooking, etc all feel good. To help those first weeks where the brain is screaming at you for the quick n easy dopamine like tv, make it harder. One thing I did was put website block-site apps on my computer and then had someone change my Netflix password for me so anytime I wanted to watch something they had to sign in for me and that embarrassed me to have to do that like hmm do I really want to watch this and have them know what and how often I’m watching.

    I feel like I watch KZread all the time because I have too much time. I wake up at 5am then I get ready and have breakfast, start homework at 6am, finish by 7am, clean and read for a little, go to class at 9am, and normally by noon I’m finished with EVERYTHING. Two or three days a week I work as a nanny, usually for about 5 hours a day and those are the highlights of my week. Saturdays I rest and don’t do homework, cleaning, or work. Early on Sunday mornings I do 4-8 hours of homework depending on how much work I have, just to make sure I don’t have to do more than an hour a day during the week. I think when you don’t have a social life you end up with a lot of free time. I’m a full time student and I also work but still I have a ton of time and end up spending my entire afternoon reading and watching KZread… The idea of having more time is scary to me because I don’t even know what I would do. I feel like I’d get depressed without KZread.

The problem is that I have depression, and I don't feel any passion for almost anything. My old habits like playing an instrument, sing, working... It sucks ! I prefer to be on my bed watching KZread very comfortable. When I cut KZread, I feel empty, I search something to do, but they are all boring and don't bring any enjoyment. Nothing interesting 🤔. I know I'm not productive, but even knowing that, doesn't matter much. I only feel so strange that I'm not interested anymore in things that I used to be. It's called anhedonia. I had several KZread channels, but even keeping them, all that struggle to maintain... make them growth... So depressing, it doesn't carry me to any place. Sometimes I'm better and begin to think about doing things again, but soon, this desire goes away again. Everything is pointless. Sorry, I don't want to make you feel also depressed. 🎉

    Spent all day watching stuff and ignored the tasks I needed to do. I feel terrible about myself, it's a serious addiction but it seems so acceptable to society. Since 6th grade when we got home internet till now (about 11 years) I've been watching tv series or videos every single day. I wish that streaming didn't exist because I cannot seem to control myself and I feel like I'm wasting my life away, don't remember when was the last time I was productive. :( I need help...

    Your feelings are correct. You are wasting your life away. I struggle with this too. I'm putting up a list of things I want/need to do in my day to be where I want to be and why I want to do them. I'm building myself up internally to not waste another year of my life.

    Well, there are several things that come to mind. First, look for books that you actually enjoy reading. I know that might sound like no-brainer advice, but lots of people read certain books because they feel they should like them. No matter if you want to read Zombie romance novels or physics textbooks, you get to decide what you like. Second, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. If you don't like reading, it will take time to develop the practice. How about you find a book that interests you and then set it on top of the TV remote. Before you watch TV, you need to read for 10 minutes. You can read for 10 minutes, then watch TV. Do this every time. If you start picking books you like, over time, that 10 minutes will become longer and longer. And, reading books doesn't have to replace TV. While my experiments tend to be all or nothing, extremes often aren't sustainable. The goal shouldn't be to stop watching TV immediately and forever, but rather to fill your time with things you enjoy and find fulfillment in, which will be different for everyone. That help?

    I just unplugged my Chromecast and put it in a box. I'm not allowed to touch it, only guests can if someone comes over and we're gonna watch a film or something. I need to start a counter for days without watching a KZread recommended video.

    I don’t want to give up or show my cards 🃏 🃏 I just work. I work 6-7 days a week. Full-time, part-time and side jobs, side gigs. I try to keep up with streaming and read a book. 💻🖥️📱📖 I don’t watch as much television streaming because I work around the clock 🕰️ However I do listen to Sirius XM satellite radio 📻 📡🛰️ Listening to satellite radio kind of keeps me updated. I mostly listen to music, a little bit of sports, entertainment and the news. Internet 🛜 💻🖥️📱 social media networks. I’ll read, watch the news 🗞️ 📰 When I have free time, I like to workout, walk around the beach, eat out (sometimes), and maybe watch a movie at the theater. 🍿 Well it’s back to work back to reality. 🧹🛠️💵
