One Year Without Television Challenge | No TV Experiment

One year ago I sold my television and promised myself I'd try an experiment where I lived with NO TV for 1 Year. Was it a great choice or a huge mistake? In this honest video, I share what I learned, explain my thoughts on whether or not it's worth trying yourself, and decide if I should buy another TV or continue life without television.
Binge-watching television for hours every night has become the new normal, but little do we know the harm and side effects watching this much TV can have on us. Before I quit TV for the last year I was watching 2-4 hours of TV a night, you won't believe how much time I've regained this year and how I've spent it.
This video covers the pros and cons of living without TV for a year as well as the mental health benefits of limiting television consumption. #Challenge #NoTV #MentalHealth
I'm Alex, I'm a travel filmmaker, photographer, and TV host. On this channel, I'll share some travel guides, my homestead DIY renovations as well as motivational and inspirational videos from lessons I've learned during my life, and cooking recipes from international cuisine using vegetables grown in my home garden. Hopefully, my videos will help you learn new skills, find happiness, inspire exploration, and grow your creativity. Stay tuned friends!

We went 6 months without a tv, and we almost didn’t replace it because we were happier just watching occasional videos on our devices, reading books, hanging out. We did eventually replace it for the kids… but its never turned on! The habit was broken. I’m also spending more time on hobbies - so there’s that. Also quiet time to think about my goals, my interests, and to actively create rather than “follow.” I think a lot of people are afraid to spend too much time with themselves and their own thoughts.

By the way, I want to thank you for your honesty. There are so many click-bait titles these days that it’s so refreshing that you actually did the thing that you claimed to have done. From my KZread watching experience, I was half expecting your disclaimer to be “I didn’t have a TV, but I did stream movies on my laptop,” or something similar. I’m impressed that your disclaimer was that you only watched one film! Also, I’m glad you kept that in there to show that it’s ok to make exceptions for things that are important/ special for you, instead of beating yourself up about not being 100% strict, or keeping it secret from your audience. It shows you are human and can make the choices that feel right for you. 🙌🏼

The sad thing as well is that often the television is just "on" - nobody is actually watching because they are engrossed in their laptop, tablet, phone etc. I would find it hard to do without entirely - especially when there's a teaser out there about a new Doc Martin series. However, I'm sure I could give it a try.

As someone who spent more and more time watching tv/online, I can tell you what the correlation is...it is loneliness, it is depression, it is feeling like you don't belong. The tv is the noise that filters out the sound of your own thoughts. I suspect that they say it is tv/social media because its easier to blame tv/online or find data bringing it back to them than it is to look deeper into the psychology behind why people end up with their nose stuck in a computer or watching tv...but in reality there is much more going on behind the scenes. I can only speak for myself, but it was my escape from pain, from what was happening around me, it was not the reason I was depressed and lonely. ............... But.... it was also my saving grace when I was bed bound for months due to ill health, so it has benefits as well...keeps you laughing, keeps your mind away from the illness you go through, the inability to go and do things. Actually watching your videos, and others like "The Inspired Unemployed" and "Emo's Not Dead" helped. Science is void of emotion, as is research if no one is asked the questions. So there is my response. Hope that adds to the information you are finding.

When we moved to NZ eight years ago, we found there was nothing on tele to watch (expect reruns of Friends!). We turn the tele on to watch the first 5 minutes of the news (let's be honest, it's doom and gloom), and turn it off after that. We go for walks after supper, talk to each other about our day, put music on, read...I don't miss it at all!

I do agree with the premiss of this video that having easy access to a TV plus all the streaming services are a time and money suck. But I think it's also important to realise that for elderly and housebound people a TV is an important companion for them. Often they live alone and sadly don't have much contact with the outside world, especially over the past few years, so a TV is a window on what's happening as well as some entertainment.

@@AlexanderAyling I think what's added to this isolation is the fear of contracting covid. I live in Australia so we've been fairly protected but it's been a 2 nearly 3 year news cycle of uncertainty and that's increased the isolation. One of my family members' social card playing club, stopped in March 2020 and hasn't started up again. And that was a great twice a week social outlet for the old guys who would meet up and play.

My mum is housebound and she would be lost without her tv. She has health issues and leaving the house isn't possible. She used to be very involved in groups etc but the last year, her health has taken a turn for the worst, she has also recently lost her companion dog, she doesn't seem to cope well if she doesn't have her tv and cries if something goes wrong with it. It just makes her life a little happier.

I cancelled all my streaming subscriptions this year. The self-imposed pressure to keep up with shows and endless content just creates anxiety and more “to-do’s” that I don’t need. I am all about life simplification and slowing down now. Of course, you find you don’t really miss any of it either which is a plus. You’re right about the finances too. Each monthly subscription doesn’t seem like much, but if you add up how much you spend on them over a few years it can be horrendous.

I agree with you 100% Alex! I went through a period of time in my life where I would binge watch TV too, and when I started reflecting on my life, realized that I didn’t want my memories of youth to be of television shows I had watched, rather than experiencing life. I’m currently in my late 30s. For the last three years, I have really limited my television consumption. Yes I do consume KZread, because I feel that what I watch expands me as a person, but I do limit the shows I watch via Amazon Prime for example- and definitely feel like it has allowed me to grow and expand since I gave that up on a regular basis. I’m more apt to turn to books, travel, meet new friends, get out and try something new, take long walks and hikes, bubble baths, practice my own drum and guitar skills, etc. I’m just living in loving life to be honest. Life is so grand and beautiful. We have it amazingly good being in this human form, getting the opportunity to do as we want within reason. There’s just so much life has to offer! Great insight Alex! I think you’re 100% spot on… I appreciate you mentioning about reading books more often to increase intelligence. I read pretty regularly, but have been wanting to bump it up for the same reason, and appreciate the reminder. You do great work- hence why I keep you and your wife on my watchlist when I do indulge, lol. You guys always offer meaningful content that helps me grow and develop as a person. Cheers!

Years ago, a professional on sleep at one of our workplace wellbeing session advised a few things that was particularly useful for me. Try to wake up at the same time. When lacking in sleep and trying to catch up on our sleep, make up for it by going to bed earlier, not waking up later at the other end. Everyone is different in how much sleep one need as it is different as we age. Some might need 9 hrs and for others 7 is enough. One of the thing that was interesting was to understand that sleep happen in blocks of about 90 mins to 1 hr per block. If we can sleep through within each blocks uninterrupted i.e going toilet, waking up etc you will find that you will wake up refreshed.

Watching TV and especially having streaming services can be extremely addictive, and I feel like so many hours are wasted. For a few months now I only watch 1 episode of a show and then go on to do other things, and I realise I get more reading done, I get to sit with my puzzles, water the plants! Hoping to reduce time on social media as well, which definitely has taken a toll on my mental health

Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s amazing how much we get sucked into all those platforms. Six years ago, after our move to the US, we decided jot to buy a tv but get a projector instead. That has reduced our time in front of the tv a lot, especially on the weekends, when we would normally have the tv on most of the day. I couldn’t imagine having a tv as a center of the living space, it feels so unnatural.

Occasionally 2 hours..😉 I would love to cut back on my KZread consumption though and do a lot more reading! I thought this was going to be about one year without "television", as in broadcast entertainment, rather than "a television", as in the device. I certainly could do without the former, but I couldn't do without my desktop computer, which I would most likely hook up to a TV when I get my own place one day. I totally get the benefits either way though, and living on a homestead keeps you busy anyway. If you lived in a city, I think you'd struggle more.

Interesting topic! I grew up without a TV, and never really watched one as a young adult since it wasn’t part of my everyday routine. Nowadays, I do watch much more TV but it’s still very selective - I turn the TV on to watch something specific and turn it off again when I’m done. I do watch quite a lot of KZread on my phone/iPad which is still screentime, but again, is much more selective and I think it’s expanding my mind rather than being mindless. I’d find it easy to give up network TV, but I really love YT content. Alex, do you watch other YT channels? How much non-network content to you watch?

Read the book “Four Arguments For The Elimination of Television “ by Jerry Mander around 1989. Mander wrote the book in 1978 when little to no major university studies of the effects on humans from consuming TV had been published since it had saturated the US culture post WW2. A great book to understand the basic reason for the invention and use of TV early on, and it’s affect on us individually and society as a whole. After reading Mander’s book, and now 30 + years later, he appears like a prophet.

I have a rule now where I sit and crochet or make something while I'm "watching" t.v. so at least I have something to show for it afterward and it feels a little less like a waste of time. I gave up on watching actual TV channels years ago, the programs were rubbish, and the ads were just unbearable. Even the news was just diluted tripe because journalists and reporters in this country are too afraid to tell stuff as it is, or ask the questions we'd all like answers too. PC gone overboard. I still have a TV, but all it's used for is YT videos or DVDs, it's no longer even connected to an aerial. Yes, there are ads on YT, but I just skip them if possible or download something and watch it from a hard drive, I'm not paying to be ad free.

I didn’t think about it until I saw your video, but I haven’t watched tv in probably over 2 years. I don’t subscribe to any streaming services and I had the cable disconnected from my tv. I didn’t really do it intentionally, I just lost interest in tv shows. However, I do watch a lot of KZread, but I find that most of the videos I watch are educational and/or uplifting in one way or another. Occasionally I will throw a dvd (yes, I still own dvds) on and watch a movie, but that is a very rare occasion. It’s funny because I remember the days of never missing an episode of Friends or Seinfeld... tv culture just isn’t the same anymore.

Alex, My son and I have a better relationship not having the noise we only have a few years left and my 15 year pretty soon will doing his own thing. I am in complete agreement with you my son feels better to not having the TV on. He does telegram that is the only social outlet that we share. I am sure your wife loves it she has all your mind and heart that is important this are precious days that we have here and why help others get wealthy. I love to support all my favorites KZread channels!

Last year I challenged myself to go without a microwave for a year. I think it was easier to get the spouse to buy-in to that challenge than it would be to convince him to get rid of the television. LOL! I can schedule in some T.V.-free days from time to time for myself.

Dear Alex, Thanks for touching on a very important topic especially regarding screen time and mental health. I feel like this does not get enough focus in our extremely interconnected world today. I understand the premise of your video focused on television, but I appreciated your thoughts on the research paper linking social media and mental health even more and I thought you maybe breezed over that a little bit, because something I - and I hope others too - would be interested in learning about, is how social media content creators view and take into account the responsibility they carry given the extremely wide reach and potential effect their content has. I think it would be even more interesting for you to dig a little deeper and explore the effect, reach and potential addictive effect your content has, and discuss this with us viewers for full transparency. One could argue that your content and the content produced for television is not too far apart in its purpose - you want us to keep watching because that's how you make your money. I also appreciated how you mentioned this in your video now, but I definitely think this could be discussed deeper. Note: This is absolutely not a critique of you nor your content - I’ve been following you and Carrie for a few years, I love what you’ve built, I just thought that given that you give this so much reflection and you aim for so much transparency, it could be a topic to explore further. Hugs from Europe

I've not had a TV since 1988. the kids grew up without one and it didn't do them any harm, my son's a joiner and my daughter reads a book a day and has a vast imagination. Dump that TV, join the local library for reading material, and not just fiction. listen to BBC Radio 4 and live a bit.

I don’t watch much tv, however I don’t see you tube as much different, (except there is better viewing in a more personal customized way.). If you really want to see a huge , and beneficial bonus to improving your life -- try no booze for a year. I haven’t had a drink in years, and it also gives you back time and it’s a healthy move. Already there are more and more alcohol free drinks that taste way better then they used it. I noticed the movie theatre are starting to offer alcohol, because they can’t get people out of their living rooms with their Netflix and cheaper drinks at home. ( and yet we can not drink and drive - nobody walks to the movies in my town ) I’d love you to look into this subject, I think you will be amazed. Once again a video I really enjoyed, keep them coming!

I like your message, but I think the real culprit isn’t the TV necessarily, but the ease of accessing so many streaming platforms from smart phones, computers and tablets. It’s easy for me to walk away from a TV. I have one and never watch it, however I do watch KZread ( never did prior to isolation from Covid) as my replacement and it can be addicting. Same with mindless scrolling because it’s just so easy to get caught up in it. Especially for someone like my college aged daughter when she gets bored or lonely. So I encourage her to get active, go outside., go for hikes, connect socially in person and not behind her phone. The world has moved so quickly into this state of easy access, that it takes effort for many to break the habit.

I sleep SO much better without a TV! I don’t have a TV in my room- I make it a point that my room’s main purpose is for sleep with the occasionally hang out time. However, my bf lives with roommates so he has a tv in his room and it’s become a bad habit if his to fall asleep with it on or have it on as background noise. It drives me CRAZY because on nights I spend the night I can’t fall asleep as easily.

When we moved from the city to a remote farmhouse, we had no TV for 18 months as the aerial cable ( extending from the house up to a ridge high above the house 600 metres away) was damaged. We made honey, read books, talked to each other, shelled walnuts -and it took us closer to living on the land, being in tune with the seasons around us. Eventually we got a DVD player, but it did not improve the quality of our life. I think you will find you will find many hidden benefits. TV is rubbish anyway
