I Quit the Internet for 30 Days.

Ойындар

Last month I had the genius idea to do a challenge video where I attempted to quit the internet, my phone, and all social media for a month. This is the result. I'm not a very good vlogger but I hope you enjoy :)

Knowing that you made the time capsule video while doing this challenge, and then seeing how well the capsule video did is really awesome. I've been watching you for years now and I've seen you go through phases where you're having an existential crisis over not getting enough views or content not being high quality enough. Seeing you face your fears and having it pay off is a super heartwarming feeling.

Very unique and interesting video Gbay. Perhaps on purpose or not - the editing is slower than many similar YT challenge style things which perhaps reflected the slowing down of your life and also mind! Crazy how it can feel challenging at times to sit and watch or read something that is not constantly mind-blowing. Very glad you made this+ the last video and released them! Super thought provoking and good twist on the norm

Hi Gbay. I honestly never comment on videos (unless they are in response to comments on my own) but I just really feel the need to let you know that the content you put out is really fucking relaxing and different. Like it really has a nice homely vibe. I don't ever comment but I'm doing so now because I've had a few drinks and I've always wanted to say I've followed and enjoyed your content from pretty much day 1. The way you narrate things and your voice in general is something I feel anyone can settle into. Not to mention the visual aspects of your videos too (which I lack any expertise in, but enjoy nonetheless) are really good for making me feel calm. Please keep making content bro. Even if you end up committing to a niche corner of league content or broadrer internet culture stuff in general. I'll always make room in my schedule to tune into your videos. God bless you man. Take care.

Hello there Gbay! Adoring the new recent touching grass videos! As someone that's done this challenge before multiple times to varying degrees of success I think I've reached the same conclusion that you have. Social media is not inherently evil. It is us engaging with the most pointless things that bother us. Furthermore I think another thing that these challenge videos fail to tell the viewer is that suddenly cutting a time-consuming habit causes a void in one's life. One that if not planned for can cause frustration and honestly, headache. The first time I did this challenge was before a big exam and since I had something to do, something to study for the challenge was wonderful. However the second time I did not have such a goal and the challenge made me hate myself! So I really do appreciate the honesty in this video regarding this topic as well. What I do lately is I put a timer for my KZread time and that's gotten me a lot more focused and aware of my time. It's like "Do I want to spend my precious two hours to watch this interesting cool guy talk about how he quitted the internet for a month or do I want to watch someone yell about the new Disney live ation movies that I know I am never going to watch." Either way just wanted to say that I appreciate these videos and in all honesty I did not even notice the issue you mentioned regarding the later half of your previous video looking weird. Keep being cool man!

It’s funny you made this video because I’m currently reading a book called “stolen focus” by Johann Hari. He’s a journalist who ran the same 30-day experiment as you in order to refind the focus he feels is lost while also completing this book. We get to see his ups and downs, as well as him breaking down interviews and experiences given from artists, to doctors, to social media analysts. Really interesting stuff

Hari has been caught plagiarizing and fabricating evidence in the past so I'd take it with a grain of salt. There are better books on the subject, I often see "The Shallows" by Nicholas Carr recommended, but IMO it is hard to go past Neil Postman when it comes to understanding how technology impacts our lives.

Really resonate with something I understood a few month ago where some friend was trying to rope me in into a technology "detox" and I was adamant to remove the technology because that's not the point. The point is to find something you want to do thats fun and you enjoy doing it more than spending your time on meaningless things. If you like runescape and it's not bothering you to play it as much as you do, no need to cut it from your life. You can replace the things you hate with things you like (I know, obvious)

Man. I can't tell you how much fun I have just watching you be you. The reason I loved watching your road to diamond videos was because even while you may have been dramatizing emotion that you wouldn't normally show, you show your emotions in such a relatable and natural way versus a lot of KZreadrs who just show completely over the top emotion (i.e. Tyler1, Dr. Disrespect, Neace, Tarzan). It's just refreshing to see someone who really feels like a normal guy be able to create content that I get to watch instead of some out of this world personality that people wish they could imitate. This video really captured so many of the emotions that I would imagine I would struggle with if I did the challenge and your reflections on setting a goal besides just quitting is a valuable insight that would definitely improve my experience were I to attempt the same thing. Anyway, thanks for being you and allowing me to watch!

I think the part about being a "chronic overthinker" is good in the long term, I believe that by keeping our mind perpetually distracted we don't self-reflect and don't learn how to cope with the bad things that happen in our lives, it might be a big reason why so many people are depressed nowadays.

This was a really refreshing take on this subject. So many of the videos I see about quitting social media frame it as this positive life transformation that you MUST do to live a fulfilling life. I appreciate how you acknowledged the positives of it while also addressing how it negatively impacted you. I am of the belief that changing our relationship with these tools and using them more intentionally is the answer rather than giving them up.

Speaking as a Gen Xer who grew up without the existence of the internet during my childhood, you didn't understand that life before the internet was about socializing with other people IRL and not about instant gratification. It seems like you took on the no internet challenge by just living in the absence of the internet instead of engaging in life as it was lived pre-internet. Does that make sense?

It feels like there is an endless barrage of sports fans in the world you could just strike up a conversation with. Why not go to a sports bar and watch the game with people or something? That isn't my jam but seems like he would have benefitted from it.

It's somewhat tricky for some people cause patterns of life aren't the same for everyone. As a millennial, my family didn't have internet in the house until I was a teen, and it wasn't useful enough to where I had a reason to be on it for any significant amount of time. The routine of life was X hours at school, Y hours in chores or homework, Z hours in TV or exercise or something, and then bed. And it was fine. Socializing was something that was confined to the working hours during the week, and maybe a couple hours on weekends. But if one has a job that doesn't require being around people in a workplace or school setting for half the day, weekdays can be really hard to fill. You can't just call up people to socialize at 10am on monday. So Gbay and others like him would face a new challenge without the internet in this way. "Engaging" in life would mean picking up additional jobs/hobbies in public, which may or may not be feasible if it's only a temporary experiment.

Great video! I was going to type a different comment in the middle thinking you got the wrong message or didn't feel like what has changed in your mind was not massive, but it seems you noticed it after you got back. No matter how small it may seem the mindset change of feeling like you don't need a habit that you were doing isn't needed anymore. Also just the life reflection is good enough. It makes you more well rounded and you think about what is going on. I feel like more people should do something like this so that they can learn to be with themselves since everyone is so scared of being in their own thoughts for too long. Good video loved just hearing you talk about stuff and try not to let your thoughts get to your judgement Let your thoughts come out in video so we can all be entertained by whatever it comes out to be.

I study psychology and one think I learned is that it's very productive to think of internet and social media as tools. If you have some need you need to fulfill, like learning something or reading some specific news, search for it yourself. Generally agency in life diminishes depression and one thing algorithms do is they throw stuff at you that you haven't really agreed to be shown. I've had a similiar journey to yours with quitting Twitter at the beginning of this year, I've had a better experience in life overall. And one more thing: when you are having a situation where you compulsory want to open twitter or reddit like you described in your video, because you are for instance annoyed by the work you are doing, instead try thinking about what you are feeling and what do you want to do right now. but like, think think, like atleast a minute, be in a moment. Social media is not necessarily bad for mental health, it's best when you know how to use it, and the way to use them is you are using them, it's not them using you.

This was a really fun and interesting video to watch. Don't second-guess yourself so much, it just gets in the way of getting better and creating good content. You are doing just fine and your audience enjoys it :). Regarding the documentaries - they are great, but they are usually very long and I (and possibly others too) often don't have the time or patience to watch such a long video. So I usually watch your documentaries at some point months after they get released. Regarding the topic of the video itself, I am glad that I never got into this social media thing. I remember when FB came up back then and I despised it, so for me it's a good thing that FB sort of went out of fashion again. Today it's Instagram and Twitter, I don't use either of those and I never read anything on there. The most social media I consume is reading comments on KZread because I like to watch videos that interest me and interact with the creator. But when you read those comments you realize: my god there are so many crazy people out there, it's insane. If I were to read on Twitter too I probably would have gone mental by now. The less you know about the stupidity of others the better for you in my opinion :D. What I don't understand is why you need social media to find out what's happening in the world - just use news sites like "normal people"? :D

I think you fail to understand; we don't care what you make a video on, we just want to see what you made. xD Gbay 30 day to knitting master video incoming? On a serious note, your documentaries of League of Legends history, teams, players and everything in between always get me incredibly excited for things I never even knew I could get excited for. The passion and excitement you have for what you do rubs off on us into everything you do. Whether it's reading a reddit post, or posting your experience of a semi-failed 30 day no internet challenge, you turn anything into an adventure. I don't think there's a single one of your videos that fails to get me excited whenever I see it in my notifications bar. If you ever feel enough passion to want to make a video on something, nothing would make us happier than for you to share that excitement with us. - Your eternal Patreon subscriber.

It saddens me to think you second guess everything and don’t believe in yourself but I can relate. You’ve been one of my favorite content creators for the last decade regardless of the content but especially the last few years. I still rewatch some of your older docs just to relive them. Glad you’re free of the curse.

I'm really glad you made that realization at the very end that the reason you hated leaving the internet was that you didnt fill the void with new hobbies, which led to dispair over how much you missed the idea of your old hobbies. I had that light bulb the moment your mood went positive at disc golf. Also you might consider renaming your pup to "forky" if she's that suicidal.

My phone was stolen a few months ago and I didn't have a phone for a month. I was kinda forced to be more focused. I picked up new hobbies, slept better, stuck to a routine and actually did my chores, etc. It was really nice.

I used to have this instictual habit of opening reddit. I wasn't even really enjoying the site really, I kept saying that I just have it as a way to find fanart, but I was clearly also following a bunch of other subreddits. At some point I decided to delete my reddit account and I kept trying to open reddit over and over for probably an entire week, realizing every time that the bookmark is gone. I think youtube's sub feed somewhat became that new bookmark of choice for me, but those are usually 1min visits to add something new to my watch later playlist unless I'm actually intending to watch something.

It's quite interesting how I'm so focused on a "I told you so" mentality. I've had experiences like this, and I'm quite fond of these social experiments. I'll say the one thing you really require is more physical stimulation. Like you say, you like sports. I think you're too focused on every thought you have. Having that tranquility to perceive, instead of question is as difficult as training an art form. Sport/ exercise will just shift your big forehead's ability to think into thinking of absorption.

you did this challenge the same time i went to SFAS, 21 days of no internet aswell, not having access to the internet had a huge impact on the QOL i was living when i came back, i found myself quite alot happier with life, and enjoying the freedom of this addiction we all have, but damn it's hard to stay out of the work, Internet, sleep cycle.
