I'm an ecologist, environmentalist, and aspiring small-scale homesteader. My goal is to live a happier, healthier, more sustainable life. I'm figuring it out + making videos along the way.
I checked the link to alt national parks. Unfortunately with "overwhelming demand" they don't offer free seeds anymore. Hopefully this wasn't due to abuse. Thanks for the great video. I'll definitely be looking to attend an event near me.

We need to go back to basics. Our ancestors didn’t have all these “fancy” things. They had the ground and seeds. Sticks to make stakes for tomatoes and such. My memaw use to tie old used disposable pie tins tied with string on posts around her garden and that helped keep the critters away. Next morning, didn't see any yellow jacket activity but there was a piece of honeycomb nest sitting next to the hole. Wonder how exactly that got there, especially considering the hole was still in tact (didn't look like the nest was dug up).

Yep. Dealing with a ton of invasives around here, and it's aggravating! I think the big thing that people don't really think about is that while they might like the plant, for whatever reason, they don't have a "right" to force that plant on to others. When someone says, "Yeah, but I really like how the English Ivy looks!" that's entirely valid. Where it stops, though, is when they can't control the plant. It will get out of containment, even if that's after the original buyer passes away. That's exactly what I'm dealing with at the moment, the prior landowner thinking that all these invasive plants were pretty. He took very good care of them.... but his family didn't after he left this mortal coil. Folks will say, "Sure, but it's my land and I can do what I want!" Yep. Sure can. But don't complain when your neighbor decides to pour used motor oil out in HIS back yard and it seeps under the fence to ruin your land. After all, it's his property and he has the right to do whatever he wants on it. Right? 😀 I think the biggest thing, for me, is just losing that "sense of place". Every town, state, ecosystem, is entirely unique, with a set of plants that are delightful in their own right. When you use plants that are mass-produced because you saw them in a store, you're killing that uniqueness that makes your area so special. When you can travel for a thousand miles in any direction and see the same handful of plants being used in every yard.... that's sad. I like to say that you can travel from Idaho to Ireland and find people wearing the same clothes, watching the same movies, reading the same books, and landscaping with the same plants. How sad is that? Where's the uniqueness? Where's the wonderful "sense of place" that lets you know you're in a whole different spot?

A mattock or pick axe are the American versions of your tool there. You can get them in a couple different sizes. The larger one swings heavy like a maul, but the smaller one might be a little easier to handle - though slightly less effective in really hard soils or heavy rooted soils.

I found out last year while eliminating a Yellow Jacket nest in a natural area with rotting wood they built home in the ground. Once activated they can track and chase you for several hundred feet. Best plan the raid near dark. Dump in your magic solution and cover the hole. Leave... :) I had a small nest later that needed to be treated several days to get cleared out. Some will be out when you attack and arrive the next day. Fill in the hole so they can not find the nest.
