I Regret Buying My Fujifilm GFX50R

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've owned my Fujifilm GFX50R for over 2 years now and not a day goes by when I wish I'd never set eyes on the thing. In this video, I explain why...

thanks Christian. I rarely use the camera off a tripod so the ergo (although I did have a little moan at them) aren't that important to me. They're more of an aesthetic issue really as the camera is undeniably unattractive!

I totally agree with you that you can no longer use other cameras after using GFX. But I have a point of view that is contrary to yours, that is, I think the 50R is very good-looking. I didn't buy the 50s and 100s because they were ugly. Of course 100 is also beautiful, but I can't afford it :)

When i first saw the title of your video i was thinking “wtf” 😂 after watching the video i agree with every single opinion of yours because i also went through the same conundrum except it was between the gfx and the canon rp (an extremely small camera). Ended up selling the RP system as much as i loved that system and lenses, but after using GF its really hard to decide to use a camera even with slightly lesser image quality.

Haha, the girls calling you shallow coupled with the Python sketch makes this a winner-winner chicken-dinner of a video Nick! I have to agree with you, going back to my pro film days I used a Hasselblad 500CM with prism finder and an array of lenses, alongside a Nikon F2 outfit. Just like you, I loved the medium format images but BOY I used to always prefer the Nikon ergonomics. Now of course my choices are rather more modest, either my delightful Fujifilm XE-2 with 3 primes, or a Google Pixel 4A..! Funnily enough the exact same argument about ergonomics still applies!

it's a hard question for me to answer as I've only used the Fuji system. What I will say is that coming from a DSLR you might prefer the GFX50S, 100 or 100S over the 50R for their better egos. The Hasselblad for me is the better looking camera, but the first edition models were buggy and prone to faults. Also I believe that Fuji's lens line up is better as well as being less expensive. Sorry I can't be of much help.

Preferring the xpro aesthetic over the xt bodies, I actually like the 50r body. Xpro2/3 on steroids. Totally agree with your comments, recently purchased the 50r and gf 50 3.5 for £2300 used, which is a great deal, amazing value and also added a couple of lenses 35-70 and the 45. KZread or web reviews simply cannot show the image quality upgrade versus full frame. Fuji files blow my Canon R5 files out the water. Initially purchased as a landscape/tripod set up but finding myself taking the Gfx 50r and 50mm pancake out as my daily. In love with the files.

thanks for the comment Rob and that deal was unbelievable!! I like the x-pro and X-T in equal measure. I also own an X-T4 and X-E1 (you should try the latter if you have a chance - it's a lovely little camera) along with my GFX100. I think the problem the Fuji medium format system has with the camera channels on YT (less with offline camera reviews I've noticed) is that it doesn't fit in with the narrative that full-frame is God, Sony is King, Canon is Queen and everything else is a peasant!! I mean, they've got to keep their views and (hidden) sponsorships going, right?!?!

I want a 50R simply because it has the X-Pan crop. I’m too chicken to spend this much on a 40 year old film camera that depends on electronics (Hasselblad X-Pan). How is manual focus on GFX 50R? Does it display a distance scale similar to the XF Mount cameras?

  • @duringthemeanwhilst

Hi Leo yes the 65x24 crop did come in handy a few times (I like shooting panos). Yes, there is a focus distance scale. You have to set it up from the screen / evf set up menu but it's dead easy to do. The 50R is a superb camera - you will not be disappointed if you get one :-)

I purchased a used GFX 50R for the XPAN aspect ratio…to finally provide the digital XPAN I’ve searched for. Recently added a Laowa 11mm ultra wide, low distortion Leica M mount manual lens. It’s 126 degree view with some distortion and reduced sensor coverage…but plenty of megapixels to spare. I got the metabones M to GFX adapter. Anyway, I’m happy and satisfied that I’ve found my XPAN holy grail.

Well I of course could not resist the click bait title and actually quite enjoyed your video. Maybe by now you will have received your GFX100S (I got mine a few weeks ago) but when you do you will absolutely LOVE IT even more! As for me, I WASN’T primarily induced to sell all my Canon gear and expensive, heavy L series glass primarily because of the weight/size reduction, but because of the inspirational interaction with the mirrorless camera "image preview" experience you got before you take your shot, especially with all those gorgeous Fuji colours! I liked the idea of having a camera so small and light though that I could take it with me everywhere I go (instead of using a mobile phone) but that never really took off. So after dipping my toe in with the XE2, it was actually the X-H1 with the deal clinching IBIS which made me sell all my Canon and go all in, and I actually quite liked the chunkier, slightly heavier feel that gave. However, the craving for ever shallower DOF drew me to crave the GFX system (or God forbid even going back to Canon for the R5, but the cost with their RF lenses was no cheaper than the GFX100S with GF lenses!). So when the GFX100 came out with IBIS I even gave it some serious thought, until I realised the size of the camera was frankly ridiculous for my usage and as for the £10k price tag, it meant I’d leave it a while and see what developed. The GFX100S was not only very X-H1 like in shape, but bigger and heavier, but at so much cheaper than the GFX100 I could resist no longer. As for looks, like you I’m at an age where I really shouldn’t give a shite what other’s think, but the first time I took it out I heard from some kids skateboarding nearby "eh Mr, I like your camera. Wow, what’s that!" So rest assured it looks the dog’s danglies and, even with the 32-64mm or 110mm comfortably fits in a Billingham Hadley Pro with plenty of room for another GF lens, even with the SmallRig L-Bracket. As for image quality and depth of field, it’s everything you already have, except more, in a better to grip/hold package and you can shoot pin sharp 102MP images at 1/30th sec quite easily! Bollocks to the extra weight. Like you said, you can’t "un-see" that image quality after that and there ain’t no going back. Though I will still keep my X-H1 and will wait and see what’s next in the X-series line up 😉

I love my 50R, yes it is heavy and bulky … My major complaint is the lack of a proper hand grip. I’ve found one that works well (well designed with a precise fit) after trying 3 different models… Without the grip, my right hand will strain after a handheld photo session. The grip does add more weight and bulk to the camera... I wish Fuji had simply designed a better grip like we have on the other GFX camera models.

Old video and all, but do NOT use soft release buttons on the X-T cameras! Those floppy and delicate Fuji shutter buttons were not designed to use soft release bits and over time those can ruin your shutter button contacts and it will start multi-releasing at the drop of a hat. Had to get my XT3 repaired from using a soft shutter button in less than a year, but since the repair and lack of soft release it's been perfectly fine.

I hate to say this, but as a Swansea boy, and having evolved through a few APS-C cameras in my time, you should have at least looked at the Nikon D850. All my recent cameras have been Nikons, but I had to reset for FX lenses instead of DX lenses when I went full frame. The D850 is a joy to use, ergonomic and very grippy, and technically a monster, the images are so sharp you'll cut yourself. The same story for you, when you got that GFX50R you had to buy lenses and you're gaining a pixel count of what? 3 or 4 megapixels - that said, like you, the leap in image quality from aps-c to full frame / medium format is just bonkers. I confess I had moved from aps-c to the D810 for two years and, the improvement was epic, but now, the D850 - oh my goodness. I know the Fuji has a bigger sensor, and the pixels are spread out a little more but the backlit sensor on the D850 was a leap. Bottom line is, the usability, ergonomics and system weight is less on the Nikon - you really should have tried it out first. See you in Mumbles one of these sunrises - we can discuss in person. Love the channel, and your take on things is always interesting.

ah, numbering. this video was filmed a few weeks ago - before your latest suggestion. I'd have been more than happy with my X-T2 (then 3) until I made the mistake of shooting MF. Now I can never go back. It's a bit like driving on the left - it's ingrained in me now. funny (ish) story - when I was racing on my bike, I used to go to Majorca for a 2 week pre-season training camp. by the time I got home, I'd spent so much time riding on the wrong side the road I had a number of near misses on my first rides on UK roads!

While waiting on the arrival of my GFX 50r I came across this video. Should I watch it?? Okay, so I watched it and a couple of things crossed my mind. Bearing in mind that I've never even held a GFX let alone used one, I first need to clarify where I'm coming from. I shoot both film and digital, and while I really like my XT-1 I don't use Fuji lenses because I simply don't like them (too 'fat', too light, no 'proper' aperture ring and they just feel cheap even though they're far from it). I use older Nikkor and Zuiko and Voigtlander and Canon lenses and manually focus. I wanted a Fuji full frame but they don't make one, which is where the GFX comes in. I don't care about frame rate, buffer size, wi-fi, video or AF speed because none of those things apply to me. So bearing those things in mind..... 1. "It's a brick"........Ha ha. I've carried a Mamiya RB67 and 6 primes up a mountain, so compared to that I'm sure the 50r would be more like a pebble than a brick. 2. The lenses....Yep have to agree with that one. Image quality might be great but I don't expect to be buying any of the lenses. They're crazy expensive and they're big and ugly, like long fat featureless tubes sticking out of the camera. I'll be sticking with my older 35mm primes, and while their ability to cover the full sensor seems to be hit and miss depending on the individual lens, the ones that don't will still give 3:2 ratio 30MP files. And if I do need to get lenses to cover the full sensor I can always adapt some Mamiya or Bronica medium format lenses which have aperture rings and cost around 10% of the Fuji. That's my take on it and while I could be talking nonsense and regret buying the 50r I'd be fairly confident that I won't. We'll see......

not sure I agree with you on Fujifilm lenses. The ones I've used have always produced excellent results and ben really well engineered with faultless build quality. they're not cheap, but good quality often isn't. as for the GF lenses, I'm in the middle of filming a video about the lenses I have and use. I have to say again that they are superb and resolve every one of the mega-pixels on the GFX100 sensor (and my 50R before that). they all have aperture collars, clicked for 1/3rd stops again yes, they are big, heavy and expensive but you get what you pay for. I do adapt 35mm Canon FD lenses sometimes, but the IQ is nowhere near what you'd get from a native Fuji lens. Unless you're on a really tight budget, I'd say that buying a GFX then scrimping on glass isn't going to get you the best results. If you find differently, then please re-post :-) BTW, I'm not a Fujifilm fanboy. I've shot all sorts of systems, but I've found that GFX is the best for my landscape needs - for now at least.

@@duringthemeanwhilst To be fair I never criticized the Fuji lenses for sharpness, I just found their appearance bland and not tactile to use. In AF they might be okay because you only use your left hand for balance or maybe to zoom, but in manual focus they don't feel or act good IMO, certainly not in comparison to a classic Nikkor or Voigtlander. I suppose it all depends on what each photographer is looking for, and whether it's all about the image and sharpness or whether the whole experience of taking photos is the thing. For me it's the latter, and sharpness isn't everything because I don't print bigger than A3 and when I do I'll be viewing it from a reasonable distance. Sure you can crop the hell out of a 100mp file and use that crop as your final image, but is that what photography is all about? I can get perfectly sharp A3 prints from my Sony A7 and a vintage Nikkor, but I don't like the Sony and that's why I'm switching to the 50r. However if any of the manufacturers had a full frame camera with a proper shutter speed dial and decent handling I may have gone for that. It's counterproductive to be chasing "ultimate sharpness" in my view, because where does it end? What happens if Fuji bring out a GFX200, or (heaven forbid) a GFX500 at some stage? If an A3 print looks perfectly sharp when viewed from 2 feet away then it's perfectly sharp in my view, because if I go any closer I'm not looking at an image, I'm looking at bits of it.

@@thewildgoose7467 all valid points and I agree, the experience is (almost) as important as the end result. I've sold my 50R and now have a GFX100, and although the IQ is on another level I do miss the more analogue experience of my 50R. but I'm not bothered by the appearance of my kit - I just don't find that important, and for me as a predominantly tripod shooter, I'm not bothered by the way a lens operates. if you mainly shoot handheld then obviously your mileage will vary. I also sometimes need to print very large images though so I find the high MP count useful. having said all that, as I get older and my back deteriorates even more, I'll soon be in the market for a much smaller kit and I'll probably go for an Olympus micro 4/s system in a year or so :-)

@@michaelc4917 Hi, I had seriously considered the Nikon Df but there were a few downsides. 1. The only shops selling it seemed to be Japanese electronics shops as opposed to photographic shops. 2. The cost of importing would have pushed the price of a little used copy over €2000. 3. The Df is 16mp, whereas even in 3:2 ratio the 50r produces files almost double that at 30mp, plus it has the ability to shoot medium format with 51mp files, or panoramic with 25mp files. For a little more than I would've paid for the Df, I got a mint & boxed 50r from a reputable camera company. The camera is essentially new, the manual had never been opened, the strap was still in the wrapper, and the camera had 13 actuations?? For me it was a no brainer. My first adapter arrived today (Nikon) and I got to use the camera with a few Nikkors. I have to say I was blown away, mainly using it in "full frame" mode of 30mp. The couple of lenses I tried tended to vignette in medium format mode, but I've more Nikkors to try out. I have some Bronica lenses for when that adapter arrives too and they should have no vignetting issues, and my Canon FD 35mm tilt/shift should be interesting too. I have to say that so far at least the GFX is everything I'd hoped it would be

Photography when used as a hobby is meant to bring happiness. I think that happiness encourages you to try harder while enjoying that hobby. I considered the GFX50R and even the 100S but ended up with the Nikon Z7II. All reviews indicated that the Fuji would produce marginally better images than the Nikon set up. However, I love the ergonomics of the Nikon along with the weight compared to the Fuji. I realized that I might take slightly better images with the Fuji when blown up, but I would also miss more shots with the Fuji because I would be less likely to wander around with that camera. I pick up the Z7II with a 50mm or the 24-200 and walk around the neighborhood, the beach, the woods more than I would with the Fuji. For me, I decided to go with what would please me more, using it or getting maybe better images when I did use it. If I were a pro in the studio, I'd pick the 100S all day long but for enjoyment, for me it was the Nikon. So I understand what you're talking about to some degree. It has to be fun or no longer is a hobby you will gravitate towards as often and in the end take less photos. At least for me :)

wise words indeed Michael. When I dropped my D800 in the sea, I really wanted another Nikon to replace it - but they weren't making anything I really wanted at that time so I went with Fujifilm. I dare say had the Z7 been out then I'd have stayed with Nikon as I was used to their menus and egos. Now I don't think I could ever switch from Fuji. The cameras do exactly what I want and how I want to do it. That's one of, if not the main, reasons for not getting a 100S - I think I'd miss that Fujifilm analogue experience.
