I own this camera since 2019. It's the best camera ever. Honestly, I'd take one 50R for instead of both 50 S II and 100S together. GFX 50R lifted my photography because photography became fun again.

I bought a used one 2 years ago at the beginning of the pandemic, I've watched so many KZread vdo about it and finally pulled the trigger .. 20-30 years ago I was hooked in doing photography, film and the process of doing black and white , from taking the pictures to developing , to printing , to even mounting ... I just loved it .. since then , I bought all kinds of crappy Nikon digital cameras but never felt connected as I did with my Hasselblad and mostly my Mamiya 6 ...The Fuji GFX50R reminds me so much of the Mamiya 6 .. hopefully soon I will learn how to post process the images better and be able print and mount my pix ... but right now for mostly convenience, I'm using X100V

I share your enthusiasm for the GFX 50r. It really is capable of amazing detail and tonal range that you will only appreciate when you view the images on a large high res monitor. I bought mine second hand for about £1700 in mint condition. I pair it with the Voigtlander 58mm f1.4 (Nikon Mount), which works very well with that sensor (manual focus only) and it keeps the cost of the system down. You do not have to buy expensive Fuji GF lenses unless AF is a must for you.

@@mattflynn6328 I agree with you. I also own the GF 50mm f3.5 but it is, for me, too sterile a lens and I rarely use it. However it’s a popular lens for many GFX users. There is a GF 55mm f1.7 in development and that will hopefully be a superb standard lens for the system, with added character.

I am trying to decide between the 50R and the 50S II. Like you, I like the retro vibe of Fuji and the analog controls. Ibis is the only thing that attracts me to the newer one. You can still find them new here in the US.

WATCH YOUR BACK ! ^_^ I absolutely love my 50R & I take a lot of images using the GF23mm / Landscape & often have to get close & low to my foreground. This takes its' toll on you when having to crouch or lie & the glaring omission is the 3 way tilt screen - IBIS would be useful - but I don't have problems - however the discomfiture caused by the screen only tilting 2 way is enough to make me want to change to the 50Sii - I struggle to carry out any hand held as well - which I don't mind - but get ready to use the tripod more & ( if you haven't used this type of camera before ) Focus Stacking That said - the indicators & distance scales make using the 'hyperfocal distance' a breeze up to about 35mm / 40mm lens

I went round and round trying to decide which camera that I would buy between these two. I ended up buying the GFX50SII, and I love it! But after a while, I still found myself looking at the GFX50R videos on KZread. When I saw a Near Mint 50R for sale in Japan for $2,000, I sent for it. I love it, too! I love both of these cameras, but I find myself taking the 50R with me more often when I go out. Many years ago, I went through the Rollei 6006, Mamiya 6, Pentax 67, and Linhof Technikardan 23S, after I graduated from 35mm. Looking back at the old photos, the Rollei with Schneider lenses made the nicest pictures. I think I loved the Technikardan the most, but of course, it was a studio only camera. The Mamiya 6 is sorely missed. Anyway, I am very happy with my Fujis. I tend to use the 50SII for studio work and the 50R for travel. I love watching your videos. They really do inspire me a lot. Many thanks!

@@OfAngeline DEFINITELY! I makes a big difference. I love the 50R, and I wish it had IBIS. But if I had to choose between the two, I would choose the 50SII. I use the GF45-100mm on the 50R because the 45-100mm has OIS, and that makes a big difference. I also like to use the 50R with the GF30mm or the GF50mm if I am out and about during the daytime. But then, there is usually enough light to make up for the lack of OIS or IBIS.

So 2 years later, and with several cameras out now with the 40mp X-Trans 5 sensors, do you think the 50R still shines enough in comparison? I'm assuming yes since an extra 10MP is nothing to scoff at, and the extra dynamic range and less crowded pixel density that the medium format sensor provides likely makes a world of difference in itself, but I'm interested in your opinion. I'm still a happy X-T3 user, but have thought about adding a 50R for landscapes and studio. But a T5 would be a massive jump in resolution at a lower price point and wouldn't come with the necessity of new and costly glass.

  • @ChrisOrange

    @ChrisOrange

    2 ай бұрын

I would say that the extra quality in image is noticeable on the 50mp medium format, but the price you pay is a slower camera, much more cash outlay for lenses and it’s certainly bigger. I think you’d get more from the T5

11 months on from you posting this vid, and they're still like rocking horse sh*t to find. Rarely come up used in the major camera stores. There's got to be a reason for that. I've had mine a little over a year (bought used), shooting mostly nightscapes and coastal. I love the image quality. It has surpassed any other camera I've used. But seriously, it's such a brick compared to the X-series that I'm used to! I bought it with pre-planned "intentional" shots in mind, where I wouldn't be too weighed down by it either while getting into location or wandering around looking for compositions. The idea was to keep the X-pro2 for the more spontaneous stuff. I've just been borrowing an X-H2 from Fujifilm with a view to maybe going back to APS-C with the new 40Mp sensor. (I'd have gone for the X-T5 but it was on a wait list). Pairing it with the 14mm f/2.8 which "people say" is sharp enough for the 40Mp sensor, even though it's not on Fujifilm's "acceptable lenses" list, I can still see a difference in image quality compared to the 50R plus my 24mm Samyang tilt-shift (the 50R being superior). But the X-T5 has so many potential advantages; size, weight, availability of faster lenses, better screen, IBIS (giving me hand-held seascapes at the magic 1/2 sec shutter speed to add dynamic flow into the water). So, heart says stick to the GFX, head says go to X-T5. I guess the ergonomics and ease of use of the camera play as big a part in creating quality photographs as do the sensor and lenses, if they put you into more locations and allow more spontaneity while shooting. What to do, what to do!

Having invested in the Fuji X system I would really enjoy the experience of going medium format and if it were just purchasing the camera I'd be for it. However the expense of buying the lenses to accompany it, is (for me) not viable. Even 2nd hand - you quote MPB who I have a history of dealing with and have enjoyed their service - the prices of a replacement system to match my collection of X lenses would equal around £10k and that's 2nd hand. If one can warrant expenditure with returnable income then fine, but for the non-professional, even as legacy, it's a lot of dough.

By "commercial work", what do you mean? What lenses do you use with it? I'm trying not to buy my first MF camera, now that the 50S II is on sale. It is funny, because everyone says how slow the autofocus is, but I'm thinking the same thing as you, I used to not even have autofocus just a few years ago, when I used all manual focus Zeiss lenses. I didn't care at all, because I always shot subjects on a tripod, and I locked the mirror up and focused under magnification on the screen. Now a pretty good autofocus system, just isn't good enough, once we've seen Sony, and Canon's eye tracking AF. Spoiled photographers, lol.

I have the 50 R and love the image quality but not a big fan of the form factor for medium format . I like range finder styling but this thing is a big brick lol …I’m getting the 100s next week and was considering trading it in but I’m gonna keep it as I do love it especially the colors. I’m more of a black and white guy but this thing makes me love to shoot color. I’m gonna keep it for the image quality and I know I won’t want 102 megapixel all the time. The images that come out of the 50r is like nothing I’ve ever seen. Incredibly clean even at high iso. I also shoot the Nikon z7 and as great as those files are the gfx is just in another league. I never thought I would ever own a medium format camera and if anyone has ever wanted to get into it ….it’s worth it,especially at the current used prices. It’s a steal.

Love my retro 50R - for all the same reasons as yourself - however I really struggle with composing when the camera is about 18" - 3' from the floor & the foreground is close - Do you ? Low chance of hand held, wish the screen was 3 way tilting & much more tripod use required - But I love it ! In so many ways ! Weatherproofing is excellent ! It's just my back can't take it ^_* Absolutely love the 23mm GF lens & would order the forthcoming GF20 - 35mm NOW if I could. It really is a lovely camera to use - Hyperfocal determination very straightforward. For anybody considering - I would say - Lenses are limited though / don't forget the crop factor of about 0.8 reduces the effective focal length & the lenses are damned heavy - So I use an S10 with the XF 55-200mm for long shots &, this way, have a lightweight body for Urban / travel use, with a pancake lens, too.

I use mine with a Samyang 24mm tilt-shift for landscapes (Canon fit). It's surprisingly sharp and the tilt fixes the depth of field problem with close foregrounds. I went for the Samyang over the Canon as it was half the price and has manual aperture control and focus, meaning it will work with a dumb adaptor (also cheaper).

If I was going to "upgrade" from the X mount to G Mount, I'd probably look at the GFX 100s, as I would already be spending £4500+ on glass just to match the minimum I require for my day to day work the difference between £3500 and £5500 for the body seems so small when the investment is already going to be huge. But back to reality, as I am a portrait photographer that does not print larger than 19" x 13" , I do not need to "upgrade" for me the weather sealed XF 56 F/1.2 mark 2 lens that is rumoured for this year or the 50 F/1.0 is a much smarter use of my money (in my opinion)

Chris- Have you heard of or tested to see if your 50mp sensor has the known "amp glow" at the bottom and left side of your images? Essentially if you take nighttime shots that require exposure to be lifted or shadows raised, even at ISO 100, you'll see a wide band of fuzzy purple noise at the bottom and left side of the frame. Picked up the 50S mkii and I'm crushed to find out about this after the return deadline...

I love my GFX50R but here's my Wishlist for a Mark II, if it ever gets made --- 1. IBIS 50mp sensor from the 50sII, no need for the 100mp 2. Lighter Body, slight increase in width to allow better handholding and also because it will look like the TX-1/Xpan😍 or the "Texas Leica" 3. Comes with optional grips, much like the Pentax K-1 Mk2 so you can attach a bigger/smaller grip with screws and not need a baseplate, and optional Wooden grip! 4. Redesigned sensor housing area to accommodate Drop-In Filters 5. Replaceable Eyecup piece available in 2-3 different types 6. Additional clickable control wheel in front, in place of the f-button, arranged vertically like TX-1/Xpan or Contax G2's focus wheel 7. SINGLE card slot - hear me out - but with at least 64gb of built-in PCI Flash memory for faster writes - even with SDXC UHS2 the camera takes time to write. 8. Viewfinder hot-shoe Connection port like the GFX50s and optional viewfinder with bigger viewfinder and adjustable magnification - priced at around $400-600 and ideal for studio/landscape work with manual focus lenses - hell, give me a HDMI-based viewfinder if the engineering for a hot-shoe viewfinder is too complex or cost-prohibitive. 9. Software to allow true monochrome mode, like the Pixii 10. Built-in Flash!!!

The 50R has more character and better colour. If you want sterile, super clean, super sharp commercial images then go for the soulless GFX100. If you want something more real then go for the GFX50R. It suits my gritty style of photography better. I'm finding 50mp too much.
