during the meanwhilst:
In October 2014 I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. I had a broken back, cancerous lesions all over my spine and things didn't look too clever. But after a stem cell transplant and some serious rehabilitation I am still here (for now anyway!!).
I used to be a quite adventerous landscape photographer but those days are long gone thanks to disability. But I still enjoy landscape and other photography as much as I can.
So please join my border terrier Dexter and me as we try to take pictures, talk about camera gear or just have a good old moan about life in general.
If you like my videos (or even if you don't) you might enjoy my blog at:

Thanks for looking!
Update - in February of 2023 I received the bad news that I have relapsed and that my cancer has returned. Oh well, life goes on…

Love my Nikon D700 - I had a Sony A7Rii and a nice set of Contax/Yashica Zeiss lenses that produced incredible, detailed images. Technologically amazing, but the Sony was soulless, like a computer behind a lens, it didn't inspire me to pick it up and go and take pictures. I sold that lot and picked up my second D700, and now shoot digital and 35mm with full lens compatibility (I still have my FG-20 that I got c.1990, plus an FM2, FE2, F5... my GAS is problematic!). I struggle with EVFs, I like to see the actual scene (rather than, as someone else commented, looking through a tiny TV screen!). Thanks for your effort with the channel, sending you positive energy and best wishes for your health and recovery 🤞.
So on the GFX how do u change the f-stop?
with the aperture collar on the lens
Exceptional macro work! Great vision.
thank you 🙂
Cool selection of images, Nick! Nice to see so many faces!
thanks Peter :-)
This video seems kind of buggy!
that's dreadful!!!!! ;-)
Fantastic pictures 😊
thank you :-)
Nice images! Cool!
thanks Dan :-)
Great captures, but don’t tell me that you did this by yourself, I can just hear Dexter and Chico saying…., there’s one, there’s another one.
Dexter is actually a very good mushroom finder. As for bugs - not so great!!
Exactly what we have come to expect from you these days Nick, superb macro shots of things I hope don't fly or crawl into the house lol. Have a good break!
thanks Alan :-)
I never knew that the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland had such intimidating looking insects. Lol almost thought we were in Australia for a second lol . Great shots, my friend.
you should see the women here Moe!!!
I hope the sitation is manageable. The photos are great, many thanks for them. 1:30 is like a competition-winning one in terms of story.
thanks - that's very kind :-)
Superb mages, love the way you’ve managed to capture the metallic sheen on the insects and the reveal on the last image was simply wow. 😮
thank you graham :-)
Great images! Beautiful countryside.
thank you 🙂 I've no idea why this old video is showing up in people's feeds but hey!
Look into the Carnivore Diet its known to heal people.
Simply beautiful images Nick ❤
cheers Steve 🙂
New subscriber here. I love abstract images and with that music, wow.
welcome aboard - thanks for the sub 🙂 I can't promise abstract pictures every week, but decent music, well that I can d0!
Man, get to the point finally
thanks, glad you enjoyed the vide… oh
Should I feed my head down in the macro photography rabbit hole and purchase the RF 100mm L macro lens??!?
oh absolutely. or get a legacy lens and adapter 🙂
Beautiful stuff!
cheers Lou 🙂
Inspiring
thank you 🙂
Really nice images, but you didn’t say what settings you used :-)
oh sorry. I used a camera...
@@duringthemeanwhilst How big?🤣
@@Enrique-the-photographer bigger than yours ;-)
@@duringthemeanwhilst You sound just like my wife🤣
A very lovely presentation, Nick. Good choice of music, too!
thanks Peter. I felt a bit of psychedelia would match the images 🙂
@@duringthemeanwhilst Will you do one on mushrooms next?
@@musicisajourney hopefully in the autumn yes. my daughter and I love searching for fungi and then "collecting" the different species in a phone app 🙂 last year was pretty barren though around here, but the year before we saw over 400 different species!
@@duringthemeanwhilst With all the rain we have these days, I see mushrooms popping up here and there already.
Two and a half minutes of visual and audible pleasure 👏🏻
thank you Alan 🙂
Beautiful images!
thank you 🙂
Outstanding. The music, the images, the psychedelic transitions, every aspect is fabulous, this video is a masterpiece. Thanks Nick, you’ve given us a real treat with this one. Hope you are feeling well and comfortable, you’re an inspiration to us all.
you are too kind graham - thank you 🙂
Nice set of pictures, different.
thanks Martin - glad you enjoyed 🙂
Boy, this was a fun flashback!
whoa - that is a page from history!!
@@duringthemeanwhilst yea, it just popped up in my feed yesterday…
You know I’ll be watching!! 💜💜
The assortment of images is truly impressive! The work is both beautiful and inspiring. So beautiful sharing thank you Nick✨💖
thank you for your very kind comment 🙂
I also have the D700 and when paired with my 105mm f2.8D Micro lens, it is my favorite combination. Hoping for your pain relief soon.
it is a great combo isn't it 🙂 ad thank you for your kind wishes 🙂
Brilliant macro shots Nick! Nice one.
cheers Ash 🙂
With these shots from you garden and nature walks you have the kicked the ball right out of the park Nick, just stunning work!
thank you Alan 🙂 I'm lucky to have some interesting things growing and living nearby!
Cracking set of images... so much so that I played the video twice. Strangely enough the music was different the 2nd time 😊
you must have seen the very first upload? I had to take it down as YT blocked it over most of the world with the Donovan track it was originally uploaded with. I re-uploaded it with some Siouxsie and the Banshees 🙂
Great photographs Nick! I assume with the d700 and a 105 macro? Simply lovely bokeh. Cheers!
thanks Ken - a mix of Nikon and Fuji / Laowa shots 🙂
Beautiful bowkay…bokuh…bouquet…bowkuh…Bo Derek??
I'll give you a 10 for hat comment (sorry, too easy!!)
Great collection of images. I never heard of Siouxsie and the Banshees, was Peek-A-Boo written by Lawrence Welk or Henry Mancini?
Hank Marvin - in an ode to his glasses
@@duringthemeanwhilst Those glasses🤣
Nice!
thanks Lou 🙂 hope you're keeping well?
Beautiful, inspiring work. I hope you are feeling well. Missing your presence and voice over .
thank you 🙂 we'll be back in August
Some cracking shots there, Nick
cheers Andy 🙂
Hello Nick, thank you for sharing your record collection. I was particularly happy to see Genesis in there. Music is a big part of my life. I have a saying "music will never let you down". Cheers to you.
thank you Ken - glad you enjoyed 🙂 I'm trying to get into PG era Genesis
@duringthemeanwhilst , Peter Gabriel was such a creative part of Genesis. I was fortunate to have seen them with and without Peter. The Lamb, Selling England, and Foxtrot are my favorites with Peter. My favorite without him would have to be Trick of the Tail. Phil really stepped up and his career really blossomed after that. Cheers and remember "music will never let you down".
@@KenJencks I tried to get into the Lamb but have so far failed! I shall persevere!!
@duringthemeanwhilst , ha e you listened to Selling England bby the Pound or Foxtrot? Two very good Genesis albums.
Hello Nick. I hope you are feeling better. I am at a loss when it comes to video and making content for you tube. Most of the tech info goes over my head. Sitting here with my typical second latte in the morning. We are expecting a heat wave to hit with temperatures in the 3 digits. Not my favorite thing. I am not fond heat. So it will keep me safe inside with the artificial cooling system. I have been working with my newly acquired Nikon 105mm af macro lens and I am quite enjoying it. I seem to have better luck with it on manual focus. Cheers my friend and all the best to you.
thanks Ken manual focus is the best way with the 105 I think 🙂 stay safe in that heat
When I was shopping for a camera a few years back, I began by looking at DSLR bodies because I thought I'd be able to buy a really great older camera at a great price. But, I got cold feet thinking I might have trouble using a DSLR. I ended up with an X-T3 at a price that was really good and which I do really like. I do sometimes wonder about getting one of those great DSLR bodies though. Maybe some day!! Take care...
thanks Charlie 🙂 yep the modern technology and light weight is hard to ignore. The D700 experience is something completely different, and switching between systems is far from intuitive, even after years of doing it!
lol the shadow gave you away. Both have their uses.
it did Dan!!
"Reala Ace picture profile?" On what? I need something to compare it with. System 1 = OP3, System 2 = GPH12. Everything you mentioned about using the GP12 is what made me ditch it for the ACE Pro, although there is still a bit of fidgeting with it too. If I keep watching videos of you mentioning that 100mm macro lens I'll build up enough "I need one" to get the RF 100mm macro!! And yes, I guessed correctly. (But I would need footage of iguanas in order to see the real differences!) 😂💜😂 For me, image and audio quality come first and then ease of use close behind. Have a great break away from all the KZread creator fun! You are loved! 💜💜💜
iguanas??? please god no - one enrique is more than enough ;-) reala ace is a fujifilm film simulation - just released so i wanted to try it out.
@@duringthemeanwhilst That’s what my mother-in-law keeps saying, one Enrique is enough🤣
@@duringthemeanwhilst It was a filter then? I liked it I guess. Again, I don't know what I'd compare it to.
TC, I don’t believe that you're going to find “many” iguanas in Swansea or Pennsylvania🤣
@@TC_Conner yep - it's what fujifilm are famous for really. there are now over 20 film simulations on the newer model cameras. reala ace is great for skin tones apparently
Great video Nick. I’m a fan of the pocket3 for ease of use and for me pocket ability. I keep it in its plastic Case in am able to shove it in my back pocket if I don’t have my mini bag with me. it is my problems that I had with my iPhone and my GoPros. It is a lot more delicate than the other two but a fair trade off, given the lightweight set up. Cheers brother.
cheers Moe - that ease of use makes me reach for it more often than not. it'll be interesting to have a good look at the new apple camera app in depth. seems a bit buggy at the moment
But what about a tuna-fish salad, peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich? Be well, stay safe and enjoy your summer break.
in my cycling days, i'd often fuel a long ride with peanut butter, banana and honey on toast. delicious. no good for macro though...
I have been considering the Pocket 3 for some time now and although I also prefer the IQ with that giveaway depth of field, I do share your concerns over the gimbal. Until my Hero 9 Black cries enough I'm going to stick with it; the quality is good enough and I don't have issues with changing batteries at all thanks to the Smallrig cage and microphone adaptor. I should follow your example and use variable ND filters because I know that some of my own footage is well below par, but most of the time I simply forget until the day I go out filming Grrr! Have a good and well deserved break 👍
i think the ND thing is just me being old fashioned and picky!! i do worry about the gimbal, but it's not broken on me yet. the face tracking would be ideal for your walk and talk style i think :-)
Was immediately obvious the first camera was the (vastly superior) Pocket 3 due to the background blur. My experience with DJI cameras is restricted to mini drones, I always use Auto exposure rather than manual. Ted Nemeth has some great tutorials explaining why Auto is best. Sounds contentious perhaps, but it works. Aside from being able to shove the GoPro in the sea to film fish or to film in the rain, the Pocket 3 is the clear winner 🏆 Have a nice few weeks, hope the weather gods smile on South Wales.
thanks graham :-) i'm not averse to using auto. just that i'm kind of stuck in my ways and enjoy the challenge sometimes!!
Have a good summer rest mate. Now on to the comparison. There were a couple of "giveaways" if viewers were testing themselves... egs 6:00 never have I seen a go pro flip from back to front filing so smoothly, lol. 6:00 The Shadow... cough 😂 Observations. I expected the osmo to have a little better stabilisation if I am honest, it didn't seem as smooth and I thought the overblown sky and highlights on your face at times has given me a bit of a negative vibe - I have been contemplating getting another vlogging system since my old go pro died in a sun drenched Corfu (thanks youngest son) & the osmo has been top of my list - now I am unsure? I thought you had swapped cameras between 5:40 (sky blown) to 5:45 (better exposure) but obviouasly when you panned the osmo was still being used? Also the filming when you switched over to the Go Pro at 7:10 the footage looked a bit jerky? Arrrgh - I am now back to undcided... thank you 😋 atb Al
thanks Al - I am looking forward to a bit of a rest. I'll prob still do a video on the music channel but they are easy compared to these. I thought about taking the "obvious" giveaways out, but then thought nope - leave them in and see who notices :-) that and the footage would be much shorter!! I picked a deliberately tricky time to film the segments with the sun getting lower, bright clouds, and me going in and out of shade to give them both a good test. I think it illustrated the difficulty in dialling in the correct level of variable ND on the Osmo with those tiny filters. precisoin is almost impossible, but on the GoPro I'm dealing with 52mm screw-in ones so much easier. yes the GoPro jerkiness and artifacting was there for all to see. in its defence it was a tricky scene to expose, me being in the shade and shooting into a brighter part of the path. all in I think over the short duration I gave them a good test, and both have their pros and cons. the Osmo scares me though with that gimbal. you can feel it fighting you when dialling in the ND - it's quite disconcerting!
Yes the the D700 is a great camera I plan on doing more with mine this year, I have been a Nikon fan for a long time started with an ELW a F2 and a F5, got a D7000 then the D700 favorite lens is a Nikkor 24mm f2.8D nedewest lens is a Nikkor 180 mm f2.8 have not used it much had a run in with covid last year still recovering and had a cataract removed that stuff up my photography for quite a while, hope your health improves.
thank you for the kind comment Robert. I hope your eyesight improves soon. I love a 24mm on the D700. I used a manual focus AiS model for a year or so and it got some great shots for me. It just seemed to suit the D700 somehow. I'll get another one one day I'm certain though what I'll end uo doing with it is anyone's guess!
