I Picked Up A Leatherman Rebar

Ive had a leatherman rebar on me for about 10 years, I have about 6 of them. I have just about every letherman they are all fantastic. I chose the rebar over the wave because while carrying the wave in my bag many years ago, I stuck my hand in there and needed about 7 stitches because the blade opened in the bag. Since then the rebars have become my tool of choice.

Yea see thats one of those *_rather large_* downsides of the convenience of having a blade on the outside. Lots of people complain about not having a knife that takes a whopping 2-less seconds to open, but I dare them to deal with what you did and not change their tune about it.

I empathize with what happened to you, but I would probably point out that the wave is quite clearly not a tool to be thrown in a bag without a sheath. That's the advantage of the Rebar and Super Tool is that the tools stay clean and protected inside of a bag or pocket

@@WC3fanatic997 lol. I tend to use a multi-tool's blade as a backup knife anyway, no need to have it be the primary, no need to have it on the outside. Rebar weighs significantly less than a wave with better tools in my opinion, I can carry it + a small knife and be in the same weight.

I have a few Leatherman myself and the one I grab the most is the Rebar. I have the P2 & 4, Signal, Wave+, Mut, T2, and of course the Rebar. Once you get it worked in it open fairly easily and its sturdy. Thanks for the video.

Solid choice - I have had a dozen different Leatherman tools over the last 30 years and the Rebar is my overall favourite - not too big and not too small, and the best selection of tools for my needs. I carry one all the time in the workshop or out on jobs.

Very cool video, I just purchased a Leatherman rebar and I love it. I like how you addressed the "clean up" on this tool. It definitely needs some WD-40 to loosen up the tools.

I like the black coating on that one. I've got the Supertool 300, which is the big brother to the Rebar. Great tool, but it's a monster. Mostly a cold weather carry for me, as I can draw the tool and use the pliers pretty easily with gloves on. I also ground the medium sized screwdriver into a chisel, because who in the heck needs all those flat screwdrivers. 😂Cheers, buddy!

I had one of the new leatherman free P4 multitools with the magnets in the handle that keep it locked closed like a detent on a knife. I really liked how fidgety it was because when you get it down you can deploy it like a balisong, but the tool set it came with was a little annoying. I think there was like 5 flat head screwdrivers of various size on it. I ended up trading it straight across for a leatherman wave plus a few months later and i have no regrets

I have used the Rebar for 8yrs+, still going strong. The tool will be stiff but as you use it daily, it will break in and get smooth. I have the stainless, had no rust. If youre worried about rust just use S2S 5 in 1 wipes or KPL knife shield. The rebar is not perfect and can be improved however Price per performance the Rebar is a good option.

The trick I do to break in leathermans exspecially the black oxide ones..is a good cleaning then I dry it all out with alcohol..while watching KZread or TV I work all the implements and pliers ALOT a least a few hundred per pivot with a little pressure in each direction to let the metal on metal wear..then reclean and lube..but with the plier handles I work then both at it same time just as if I was about to us the tool.. if one breaks in more than the other it makes the closing odd.. for the pliers heads I've learned just using it works the best when the tips are opened but still under torque in use just seems works alot better and faster than just opening and closing alot. Idk if the stiffness bothers you or not I just wanted to leave this comment for the people that could get use out of it..as always thank you for the videos I always enjoy them

Good tool the Rebar! Ive got both colours. The black one was sent to me to replace a Leatherman fuse i sent to them under warranty. The first one was a replacement for a pst sent under warranty. I have a Surge new generation with replaceable cutters this is great for those heavier jobs? Another recommended model is the Leatherman 300 super tool.

In Leathermans defense, Victorinox uses budget blade steel across the board that is on par or just below 420HC. For the price, they don't do any better.

Rebar is a good choice. Black coating from Leatherman is not in my opinion. Please check videos on KZread on cons of this coating. If I could I would sell my black Wave and get a satin finish one but I tried stuff to loosen the pliers and I wouldn’t get a fair price for it. Also I see brownish stuff coming out of handles pivots area when I clean it, so my assumption is that it doesn’t help with the rust resistance, just hides the rusty spots well.

I like my Rebar - the only full size LM I own - but I only paid £50 ($60) for it as it was a ''second'' as the blade engraving had been overwritten i.e. in effect there is a visible black rectangle on the blade which in no way affects the performance. Would I have paid full price of £75 (£90) for it though? No chance, for an extra £15 ($18) I could have bought a Swisstool, or for £20 more the Swisstool X. Both are cheaper than any Wave or Charge, tbh I'd never pay full price for a Leatherman as the prices are far too high here in the UK, the only exception being the Bond which I'm considering buying. The Rebar lives in a pouch with my bike repair kit (puncture kit, chain breaker, etc) which itself is always inside a backpack or pannier bag but still technically I'm living dangerously from the pov of legislation as I'm not sure whether a court would accept that as ''valid reason'' to carry a locking blade, so when I get the Bond I'll probably carry that instead, and the Rebar will live in my bug out bag.

@@markcoffman494 Yep the Rebar is definitely a better choice if you're not constrained by silly laws like here in the UK! There's knife crime amongst youth gangs especially here in London but no self-respecting ''roadman'' would carry a Leatherman for that lol. Their preferred weapon is a cheap kitchen knife or machete anyway, both of which can be easily bought for £5 a piece. But I'm just getting the Bond for piece of mind. Also I've heard good things about it plus it will pair nicely with my Vic Farmer X. Surprisingly the saw on the Rebar is pretty skinny compared to the one on the 91 & 93mm SAKs.

Another thing to like about the Rebar is how nicely it fits in a jean coin pocket. It's very narrow, compared to a SAK with anything close to its tool inventory. Also, the locking tools are a huge plus, in my opinion. Having said that, I also love my SAKs which I carry more often. The Rebar is for Camping/hiking/adventures with the kids. It's kept in my vehicle as a more capable emergency tool.

I have found it to actually prevented a little bit better than the stainless steel model that I have. The one that I had that was Pierre stainless steel was getting rust spots all over it compared to the black oxide it had nothing. So far black oxide for me is the best bet.

@@markcoffman494 well, I didnt do any tests about this but I’ve seen many rust on black oxide tools as well. Also worth mentioning that BO is a form of rust too hence its name oxide. It is not a coating it is controlled rust. Doing a test would be cool. Keeping a stainless an a BO tool in a highly humid area for a month and taking pictures every day would be interesting.

@@archieballantineMy Rebar was a bit tight like in the video, but loosened up after a couple weeks of use. Some Leatherman tools famously have a "break in" period to begin with, and I think the black oxide contributes further to that, as I could feel the "grit" of loose powder in the joint while deploying the pliers early on. Since breaking it in, I have had zero issues. I didn't mind the minor hassle personally, but I understand why some would prefer not to bother.
