For those considering purchasing the Rebar, just do it. Hands down the best Leatherman in terms of functionality, size/weight and price point. I’ve had mine for 7 years now and feel naked without it. Great review mate ! Cheers

I have both the Wave Plus and the Rebar. Hardly ever do I find myself in the need of using the Wave Plus, though I love using my Rebar every day. The Rebar definitely beats the Wave Plus all the way - it's better equipped and much more suitable for EDC. Also, the Rebar's 4D Phillips screwdriver is much better and more solid han the Wave's crappy bitholder.. Carrying separate extra parts such as a bit extender and a bit kit makes no sense with a multitool - one might directly carry a dedicated tool. The Rebar's awl is much more useful than the Wave's "scissors". Finally, the Rebar is a little smaller and lighter (yet big enough for comfortable use), and unlike the Wave, it has a solid integrated loop, so I permanently carry it on my keys. The only advantage of the Wave is the ergonomic design that allows accessing the four basic instruments from outside, but that's not a big deal. The price is NOT a quality of the product (the price is not and instrument or a function, and you don't use the price for cutting wood, clipping wires or opening bottles, do you). If you need an electric drill, you don't buy a hammer instead just because it's much cheaper, do you. You buy what you need, not what you can get for a lower price, so it's stupid to use the price as an argument when comparing products. The price is a symptom of the market, not a quality of a product. Therefore, the reason to get the Rebar preferably is not its lower price - the reason is the Rebar's better equipment, quality, and versatility.

I work as a lab technician and always have a black oxide Rebar in my pocket (as well as a Victorinox Huntsman). I use them all the time for working on GC-MS instruments and other general tasks, since 9 times out of 10 its faster than finding the proper tools. I'm always the subject of some good-natured ribbing for being the "knife guy" (most people in Australia don't carry knifes because it's technically illegal in most situations). Funnily enough, they always end up asking if they can use them...

I want that sheath for my new Surge tool, but, in a horizontal orientation. I “replaced” my Wave with the Surge, as it has all I really need and then some. Now, I’m considering “replacing” a Victorinox multitool I own, with a Leatherman Rebar, and its bit kit accessory. What I do, is buy a new tool, and then sell or give away the old tool.

I guess weight is they key to your decision to go with the Rebar. The Surge has longer blades with one hand outside access and it has more tools. It is super neat you can even use jigsaw blades. But right, it is a little heavier than the Rebar.

  • @My03Tundra
    @My03Tundra3 жыл бұрын

My poor Rebar is at Leatherman due to chips in the main blade. My Free K4 is there for the same reason. I also agree that for its size, it performs very well, which you won’t hear any women saying about their men. Oh, Rimshot! Also, since getting the SupertTool 300M, it just made me think of a Rebar 2.0 where it would be little bit thicker and feature internal scissors, and a few other tools it is missing. I know this is unlikely to ever happen, though. The serrated blade, cuts through harsh materials like cardboard like a champ. I love it. Also, there is a bit kit that will fit over the Philips/Cross driver. I have it, but don’t use it much. Honestly, if I need scissors (a commonly needed tool around my house), I use the pair on my Free T4 I generally carry along with the Rebar. If I need a beefier knife (when I have it), I may also carry my Free K4.

The Rebar, Supertool and Bond are the only LMs now which have a proper fully profiled Phillips screwdriver. The 2 and a half D drivers on budget tools like Rev, Wingman etc. are even on the premium priced Free fidget toys, as are the short useless files. As to the bit drivers on the Wave etc, the bits are likewise not fully profiled and I've read bad reviews about how the Phillips and Allen bits perform which is hardly surprising as they are really only half bits; not to mention the fact that they are made from mystery steel. I own a Rebar and a Bond and I'm not looking to buy any more Leathermans, as like many I've started carrying Knipex and a dedicated bit driver as EDC.

I've been looking to replace my trusty, albeit wobbly, Wingman with something more sturdy, and the Rebar looks to be perfect. I would be severely missing two things from the tradeoff, though: the package opener (sometimes called the clamshell buster, and for a damn good reason. This thing carves through plastic like butter) and the pocket clip. For the latter, though, I'm really damn glad I clicked on this video, because that metal sheath look perfect for use as an inner-pocket holster. It'll probably add on some thickness, but hey, it's probably worth a try.

From my personal experience Victorinox Do not stand behind their Warranty. Victorinox gave me the run-around many times. Leatherman has a more Industrial design and stand by their Warranty every time. In a Serious Survival situation, when you're cold, wet, hungry, dehydrated (in a fight/flight scenario) and limited dexterity in your fingers,i would love to see if you'll be able to get those Tools out from that Spirit or Swisstool. Yes it's on the outside but it is so tightly packed (like a swiss arny knife) and so reliant on those small nail nicks- it will be to your detriment. With the leatherman Classics- Wave,Charge,Surge,Supertool 300 or even the Rebar i could get those tools out with ease. One hand opening blades, even the Rebar blades are easy to get out with Large Nail Nicks. You even get better Blade steels 154cm /S30V options (charge) and 154cm cutters. I prefer to have a tool that i can use when shit hits the fan with tools that are easy to deploy.

As he stated in the video, the victorinox got rickety, loose, all that. Leatherman stomps in the end game, when it comes down to which’ll survive longer and when they do break, and they will, Leatherman will repair it without batting an eye.

Fwiw the knifeless version isn't as comfortable as the regular version. The knives are shaped to fill in the cut-outs in the handles. Without them the smooth line of the handles is lost. One blade is replaced with scissors (OK), the other by a spacer (not OK). The locking saw blade is retained. So, it's not really knife-less. All told, a bit of a lash-up by Leatherman, sold at a premium. Not recommended. Juice S2 or CF4 are better, Euro-legislation friendly, urban carry options. The standard Rebar is a gem, obviously.

A retailer sent me a Wave instead of a (second) Rebar a couple of weeks ago by mistake. Personal honesty aside, I compared the Wave with a Rebar, decided I really didn't like the relative clunkiness of the Wave, the crappy bits, the comically small scissors, or the inferior wire cutters and sent it straight back. For EDC, camping and such, rather than a job-related tool, the Rebar is more appropriate impo.

ComUnSas I was skeptical, but bought a knifeless version anyway which is still waiting in the U.S. to be shipped here. You obviously can't get on a plane with a saw, but I thought with the scissors it might be a better tool.

adhair The Gerber bladeless MP600 has a removable saw blade but a lot of folk online have said the replaceable cutter bits shatter. Plus I'm a bit meh about Gerber. So I gave that a miss even though it is truly bladeless. Don't get me wrong, the knifeless Rebar still has a lot of Rebar goodness and like many I carry a separate pocket knife appropriate to the environment anyway. So why not some scissors instead. However, the handle is noticeably less comfortable in my hands and I wouldn't want to use it for extended periods.

  • @ComUnSas

...one more thing, because there are no blades, Leatherman moved the file up against one of the handle cut-outs to at least partially fill the gap. Which means that the file grates on your hand slightly and, because it seems to be high carbon steel, it goes rusty where it touches any perspiration on the base of your thumb or the inside of your fingers. This really is a crude hack of a standard Rebar with no heart put into it whatsoever, probably thought up at about 4.30pm one Friday afternoon.

Because it’s apparently totally illegal to carry this in public in Tasmania now and it was totally illegal to carry this in NSW for much much longer I’ve learned. I carry a small Spyderco to work (manager in a store where boxes and rope is cut so certainly have lawful excuse to carry it) and I want to buy a multi tool but I wonder whether there’s any point because i might not be able to take it anywhere unless I’m working or doing obvious outdoorsy stuff. Personally I think it’s a load of crap. My Dad carried an old pst his whole life. And I suspect there are one hundred assaults with kitchen knives for every assault with a knife or folder. Anyway. In the UK it would be fine to carry a PST now, because it's a non-locking blade on it and I'm pretty sure it's under 3in/7.62cm. The Rebar wouldn't be legal as an EDC ''without good reason'', but I'm buying one anyway, for camping etc. when I carry fixed blades or my locking blade Vic Soldier (because then I can argue that I have good reason) and for my bug out bag. In the UK we're allowed to carry a non-locking folding knife with a blade under 3in ''without good reason'' i.e. just going about your daily business but even then you can't go inside pubs, clubs, to football matches, or inside schools with any blade whatsoever. Meaning we're limited in terms of EDC multitools to stuff like LM Squirts/Gerber Dimes and a couple more like the Juice series, and in terms of larger tools only 2 which are completely bladeless, the Rebar knifeless, and Gerber MP600 bladeless. I have the MP600 bladeless as a bag carry EDC, otherwise in my pocket I have a Squirt PS4, or a SOG Micro Toolclip. Also I always carry a folding slipjoint knife, either a SAK or Bokerplus. Even then some people don't believe I'm allowed to carry those and look at them like they're machetes sometimes lol.

Closing the notch over the wire then twist and pull gets the job done. I like the hard wire cutters to strip wires better.

I'm writing this 4 days before 2021. That's about 25 years after the Wave was released. There are a number of reasons why it's the most popular pliers-based multitool of all time. I'm pretty confident that a lot of us would agree that if we can't get to a knife one-handed, we're not interested.

I love my Leatherman Rebar, and the only gripe I have is the lack of scissors. I use them, and a straight edge, very often. I used my Rebar to pickup cactus yesterday to replant them.

The LM-Charge for example is a much more userfriendly and frankly "better" multitool. So WHY on ffs the Rebar ?!?

Rebar got more points on smoothness, compactness, carry-ability, lightness, classic-look, price, philips head, etc.

If you have a second knife, I'd look into the rebar - don't care about the diamond file, and the flat stubby screwdrivers are annoying

I'm gonna film a Wave vs Rebar comparison video tonight. There's a lot I have to say about them. I was extremely excited about the knifeless Rebar, but I think Leatherman dropped the ball on it. One knife is replaced with scissors, but the other is replaced with my sex life, also known as NOTHING. They also kept the saw on it so it's not travel friendly like the MP600 Bladeless. Leatherman is going down hill fast which is another video i'm gonna sadly have to make soon.

Yep that's pretty obvious to me too, anyone who knows a bit about the world would choose Swiss made over US made, nobody in their right mind would argue that Dodge or Ford are better than VW or Audi for example, and Swiss is a cut above German quality. However I do sometimes carry a Squirt as really there isn't such a small Vic with that toolset, if there was - like a minichamp with pliers - I'd buy it like a shot. Likewise I am getting a Rebar for my bug out bag as I found one for just £50 new. I always carry a Vic though as well as any multitool, often I carry 2, like Farmer and Classic, no real overlap in toolset. I would get a Swisstool however I think they all have locking blades so I wouldn't be allowed to EDC. Might get one all the same lol. What's amazing is that even a pretty comprehensive Swisstool like Spirit X plus with ratchet set and so on is still cheaper than quite a few Leathermans like Charge TTI, Signal and so on. God alone knows why. But I wish Vic would make a Swisstool with either a non-locking blade or bladeless for the UK and other markets where knife laws are restrictive.
