Leatherman Bond

This is the best engineering I have seen out of Leatherman in a very long time. The Bond is an absolute winner, in more ways than one.

Thank you for addressing the one problem I had with the original Leatherman in your review and the main reason I switched to Gerber, the square edge when using the pliers. I am a machine technician and I do use the pliers many times when doing electrical work on most machines. When they wire a machine at the factory they use DIN rail terminal blocks and the wires go into wire ducts with maybe an inch to two inches between them. Maneuvering the wires into the correct block in that tight an area is extremely difficult by hand. With the uncomfortable grip Leatherman had for using the pliers it made the task harder than it needed to be, so I looked for a more comfortable multitool and found it with Gerber. Glad to see that someone at Leatherman woke up and did something about it.

Really good video. The Bond has just become available in the UK and appears to be selling well in the online stores. I have managed to purchase one and I am impressed by the light weight and sound design. It is also good that we can legally carry it in the UK without having to provide 'Good Reason' to the Police.

  • @davidwentireland

    @davidwentireland

    3 жыл бұрын

Careful! My understanding is that it is not legal. It might not have a locking blade but you have to fold back the handles to close the knife - the blade is locked open when the handles are closed and it takes 2 steps to close the knife and this, sadly, makes it illegal in the UK and Ireland. If the blade was on the outside when the handles are closed like it is on the Wave then it would be ok.

That a big reason for the popularity of the Spyderco Delica, its 2.99 inch blade is not considered a weapon in many states unless used as one. Great video! Im considering this one since I lost my old Leatherman Fuse and Wingman. Its crazy that the wingman is selling for $60 now on Amazon, it was $20 when it was newer, atleast thats what a review said fron 2013. I mean you can carry OTFs, automatic knives, daggers, bowies, or even swords or executioner axes and it is not against the law (as long as you don’t threaten others with them). However, it’s true that some countries have strict blade restrictions. (Some of them even banned carying pepper sprays and tasers, which is beyond my understanding.)

I have to admit I was skeptical when I saw the leaked images. But looking at it in more detail it makes total sense. I think the knife retention is a huge issue though, they could have fixed it by making it a sheeps foot as well as your proposed solution. All in all, pretty solid little tool.

Great in-depth review, thanks. It's a shame that the Bond doesn't include a wood saw, but other than that, it ticks most of the boxes for me, at a decent price too. I'd certainly take this in preference to the Wingman, the Sidekick, or any of the Free series multi-tools. But for now, I'll stick with my Rebar.

As far as UK friendly tools I have some comments as many look at the Bond for this reason. Besides the Bond consider: In the UK a blade-less multitool seems like it would be appealing. I mean a bunch of locking tools and you can just carry any non- locking knife you like maybe a SAK Compact if your tool doesn't have scissors for example or a SAK Walker if your multitool doesn't have a saw, or a SAK Waiter so you can open a beer or bottle of wine without getting a bigger tool out... There is still a tool-less Rebar and there used to be a tool-less Fuse or get a SOG and just remove the knife, replace it with something else if you wish as they sell individual impliments. If you could find a Leatherman Leap it allows you to remove the knife and is lightweight... Also there was a Leatherman Kick that had no locking blades including the knife and some (few) had pocket clips (sold separately). It just had screwdrivers, a knife and of course and plier head but it was light. Speaking of old tools if one could find a PST, PST 2, Sideclip, or even a Gerber MPT (copy of PST) they'd all work in the UK I believe. So I hope I gave you some UK friendly ideas to ponder...

Great for people who live in restricted areas. I love this multitool, my first Leatherman was a Kick with a pocket clip. But for me it's a step back to use a slip joint. Personally, nothing Leatherman has come out with has replaced my Wave, Rebar and Skeletool. Honestly, though, Leatherman has great designers.

This seems like a great new tool. I've been really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it; thanks for always making great videos. How does the comfort of using the pliers compare to the Wave? It looks like a lot less material to support your hand, but I'm curious there's still enough there to squeeze hard on the pliers without it digging into your palm too much.

When comparing this tool to the Wave, from a comfort of use standpoint, it is really no contest. The Wave wins hands down. The overall design of the Wave is just better in my opinion. But the Bond takes huge strides in increasing the comfort of the user over its counterparts like the Rebar and PST. It is one of the reasons that I am looking forward to seeing the Curl up close.

I think the best solution for this problem would be to switch this blade out for a sheep’s foot blade, suggested by another viewer. It would make it incredibly easy to retract and eliminate the possibility of someone getting cut accidentally.

I said it all along that the magnets would be caked with steel particles in no time in my shop. I've also said that I can flick open my old broken in fuse if I want to. It's is my belief that the lower cost of this tool is merely a side effect of a simpler more compact tool designed for people like me who just don't need more than a few basics.

Except the grip design, ruler faces ,and that BOND has blade choil that looks like the relic of REBAR locking system, which is no longer there in BOND. As Ben pointed out, European knife laws would explain that. But then the file also has the unnecessary-looking choil.

  • @smitnkp

Nice review as always. This tool is interesting. I guess it is a slip-joint version of the Rebar, all the tools look identical and I think they are identical. I prefer this style of construction more than newer design due to compactness (still use my '97 super tool regularly). This new MT has some features that I like, namely the pliers and the pocket clip but I would like a sheepsfoot blade (straight edge) instead. I hope they upgraded the Rebar with an option to attach pocket clip, replaced one blade with large wingman size scissors and a straight edge sheepfoot blade, that would be my ideal multi-tool but I guess it will never happen.

I knew I could count on you to catch my mistakes! You’re right about the depth measurement. Not sure how I messed that up. As far as the brake on the Rebar, I underestimated it slightly. It is closer to 80° - 85°. The Bond definitely has a tighter brake, which lends it to be more comfortable when using the pliers.

I’ve always been confused by the popularity of the Wave. Mine always had issues with different tension between the two handles when closing the pliers and it drove me nuts. Not to mention a nasty pinch point that perfectly lines up with the meat of your palm at the base of your index finger, that caught me quite a few times. After the frame cracked a second time from squeezing too hard with the pliers, I took up leatherman on their trade in offer, and bought the free p4, and haven’t regretted it. It’s not perfect, but it’s does everything I need it to and then some... I had reservations about the magnets as well. I make knives as a hobby/side business and I’m always picking metal dust out of my AirPods case. I though I might have a similar issue with the p4, but I haven’t had any issue so far and I’ve had it on my belt for a year or so now.
