    Leathermans are in a weird spot for me. On the one hand, I love that they've reduced workplace injuries in my industry (I build sets for TV and movies and they reduce the up and down on ladders to get a tool and so on). On the other hand, they are a long way from delivering a tool that is worth the money they ask. I respect them, but they need to stop fingerblasting their own assholes on our dime.

If you think of the price spread out over 5 or 6 years, the LM multitools are a fair value. Granted, not all of their products are of the same quality. But if you get options from the higher end of their range the value actually increases.

    In the UK a blade-less multitool seems like it would be appealing. I mean a bunch of locking tools and you can just carry any non- locking knife you like maybe a SAK Compact if your tool doesn't have scissors for example or a SAK Walker if your multitool doesn't have a saw, or a SAK Waiter so you can open a beer or bottle of wine without getting a bigger tool out... There is still a tool-less Rebar and there used to be a tool-less Fuse or get a SOG and just remove the knife, replace it with something else if you wish as they sell individual impliments. If you could find a Leatherman Leap it allows you to remove the knife and is lightweight... Also there was a Leatherman Kick that had no locking blades including the knife and some (few) had pocket clips (sold separately). It just had screwdrivers, a knife and of course and plier head but it was light. Speaking of old tools if one could find a PST, PST 2, Sideclip, or even a Gerber MPT (copy of PST) they'd all work in the UK I believe.

    The problem with a custom shop is I think even at $50 extra they wouldn't make money because they turn these out at a rate of x number of tools per minute and it would take significantly longer for a worker to pick out all the separate tools and assemble it in the correct orientation. I think they'd probably have to charge double to make the added assembly and quality control time profitable

  • @garethbaus5471

    @garethbaus5471

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@jb7707 a moderately skilled worker in a well designed work station with standardized compatable parts and a few spacer's to fill any gaps in bad designs could reliably assemble a tool in less than half an hour so assuming they are making about $30 an hour and doing this full time referencing a computer monitor for every new tool configuration Leatherman still has $500 per day to buy the equipment and make a profit off of the production of this one person. So as long as Leatherman releases this option with a slightly undersized work force they could probably turn a profit.

    The first good thing leatherman has done in over a decade is the Bond, I can't even remember the last time I was interested in something leatherman did. I've had mine a few months using it a lot at work and have not been cut by the blade, but while I'm not worried myself I understand the concern. A good simple slim and relatively compact tool that has the things I care about most and nothing I don't need. It has the proper real leatherman impliments I love of my trusty 2006 leatherman Fuse minus the unnecessary smaller driver and including the awl and file.

  • @michaelkulman7095

    @michaelkulman7095

    Жыл бұрын

    So that's a knife-less fuse then? That came with a file? I've been tempted to take out my knife and scissors and put in a file and a saw and carry a scissors on my keychain and a stand alone knife in my pocket or carry a SAK Compact for a knife and a scissors. If only I could find the pocket clip I think they used to sell for the Kick which might fit the Fuse...

    @@michaelkulman7095 I was saying I like how the bond has a file and has an awl instead of the smaller driver. My only complaints about my trusty but currently retired fuse are the lack of awl and the defective scissors.

    @@TylerSnyder305 Yeah and the scissors are small too. I have considered SAK Compact to get good big scissors in a slim knife and putting a file and a saw in my Fuse in place of knife and scissors. and maybe an awl or grind down smaller screwdriver to an awl or use slim 3d Phillips instead of square shaft Phillips to squeeze an awl in or... however I like the idea of the bit kit that uses the square shaft truss style Phillips to mount bit holder but I wouldn't EDC that without special reasons...it's cool but will I carry it? I could leave it in glove box? I will say that square shaft Phillips doesn't fit into recessed screws in blow molded cases and that's come up for me more than once, more than needing tons of specialty bits like Torx or Robertson...or whatever else they foist upon us next... Being slim and having locking tools makes me want to mod the Fuse, I like the Fuse...If I was in the UK I'd mod the Kick though...or use it as is...I had one, it was pretty good for a slim all screwdrivers, pliers and knife multitool... I mean it seemed better than the Bond to me based on videos... I will say in the UK knifeless tools look pretty attractive be it the discontinued knifeless Fuse or the knifeless Rebar... Anyway I think the Zytel or Xytel lined family was underappreciated. I like to ramble over coffee...

    You're totally right. They are already doing colors but I'd rather they did a signal and wave platform tool you could customize. On the Signal I would replace the awl with scissors and/or the stupid combi blade with just a regular blade. I'd also consider replacing the saw with a serrated blade since I do not use multitool saws a lot. Plus I think they could come up with some other ideas for the sharpener/file? and the Ferro rod/whistle pieces like a screwdriver extender for the but drive or extra bits that would fit in those slots. On the wave, Id put a pocket clip on it and ditch the medium screwdriver for an awl/scraper. And to those, why I have a Signal and a wave. The signal is lighter and the carabiner clip makes it easier to carry cause I can attach it to almost anything. The wave needs a sheath or pocket if you buy a pocket clip for it plus its one ounce heavier and that makes it not great for some of the pants and shorts I wear.

    Maybe they properly messed up when they gave us fantastic tools like the Wave/Surge/Rebar/ST300...and now feel like they have nowhere else to go (I guess the things they're loyal fanbase has been asking for doesn't enter the equation with them), hence I dont care for either of these "new" tools, especially for the price on the Curl. Didn't care for the Free Series either, but I wouldn't mind any of them if they were also giving us at least some small, easy to do things, that we've been asking for..for years, like steel choices, likes color options on their most popular 2 MT's, etc. But they're not, they're just seemingly ignoring us, removing a few tools of popular existing MTs, coming close to to charging a premium, and sneaking them on to the showroom floor at midnight...hell...we had to announce them ourselves, there was no big marketing for them...lol...if that tells you anything...calling them "new"....and basically saying "there you go, we gave you something you *didnt* asking for, now get bent". They just don't seem to care what we think anymore, and I do think that it's partly our fault for finding ways to fall all over ourselves for everything they pump out, talking ourselves into it being the best thing ever, even though we would be lighting it on fire if it was a Gerber (who I actually think is making efforts to cater to the market right now). They'll probably never do a custom shop for fear of it undercutting their existing lines...if you can actually get what you want, where does that leave their other stuff? That's their fear, probably. Maybe justified, I don't know, I of course would love it though. But like I said, they could pump out turds all day long for all I care..as long as they were giving us something we want..but instead they spend all that money for infrastructure on magnets and other things we never asked for, its frustrating.

    I wish Leatherman was more vocal about this, but there is a really good reason why they don't offer a modular system. Only certain tools will fit in certain places to allow the plier heads to fold properly. If they did offer a truly modular system, either the tools would be hilariously small or the overall size would be humongous. Some of the Leatherman engineers have talked about this on AMAs. The problem isn't that they aren't aware that people want this, it's that customers don't realize the implications of such a design.

    you could definitely at least choose whether you had serrated/file/knife/saw as all those are interchangeable as they already show on the various swap sets across the bond/rebar/knifeless rebar range and the curl/wave/charge series. Even some customization rather than ‘build your own from scratch” would go down well

    They could offer a few custom or just additional models of things we all know work well and are out there already as proven mods... I mean many are just drop in mods and changing the number of washers for Pete's sake... Just because we can't have complete customization doesn't mean they couldn't offer something more with existing off the shelf parts...

    The potential to cut yourself with that knife has been a problem since the PST. I sold my PST for that single reason. A detent on that knife would be nice. 100% agree on the custom shop. If key bar figured it out, Leatherman and SAK can certainly do it. I think they're worried it'll cut into their own produced models. The replaceable craft or razor knife has been requested forever, I'm surprised no company has hopped on it. Gerber had the artifact, that was way ahead of its time.

    I have had Kick, Fuse, and Blast and in good condition, tight the blade didn't flop out like that and I believe if it did you could just tighten them up. I have one well used Fuse that is a little loose but not like the new Bond...and none of them have that cut out which seems like a good thing. If I'm wearing gloves I hold the pliers head as a handle and smack the end of tool on the heel of other hand hard and then I pick the tool I want and push back in the others. I for one like tool clumping for this reason as opposed to being totally dependent on nail nicks and blades being springed down... This system can work but didn't the way they did it on Bond. Now maybe with wear the problem is waiting in the wings for other tools but it's not there at the start as it is for Bond. So it's problematic I think...

    @@michaelkulman7095 I had the PST in the early 90s in the Army. ALL of us in our unit seemed to. The blades didn't lock but you just put up with it back then. The Bond - to me - seems a lot like that PST. Kind of the perfect set of starter tools and at Leatherman's version of an "entry level" price point. But I'm not putting up with that "no locking blades" BS in 2023. To me, my Blast is perfect as far as a general use, more or less entry level priced tool. I kind of look at it like the Bond only with locking blades. It's probably why it makes the Bond a little more frustrating, as a missed opportunity. They get rid of the better tool for an inferior one that also sells for about $10 less than the Blast did, if memory serves. Take care.

    @@AJHart-eg1ys Was blade flop out bad with the PSTs like the Bond and did tightening it up mitigate that? I'm curious about that. Locking tools, yeah I think the lack thereof on Bond is entry market driven as to price and foreign market driven, due to knife laws and less complexity and weight driven. So yeah, no locking tools isn't so tolerable today. A knifeless tool with all locking blades already exists, a version of the Rebar and there used to be a knifeless Fuse with a file in place of the knife and that seems like it could satisfy the foreign markets with various knife laws and they can just carry a separate pocket knife to fit their countries laws. That's what I'd do if subject to such dubious things... I'm not sure they should have retired the Kick (UK and German friendly), the Fuse (German friendly) and the Blast (German friendly) just on the basis of foreign markets and some good less expensive tools. Or to move on maybe they should have spun off more Rebar variations to really fill these niches. Thanks for the feedback on the PST.

    @@michaelkulman7095 i don't recall any issue with flopping with the PST. But, to be honest, we probably wouldn't consider it flopping back then. We would have simply considered it having been broken in. We kept it in the sheathe when not in use anyway, so how easily it was to manipulate wasn't really an issue.
