Throughout the journey of learning indie game development, there are many topics to cover. Whether that's game programming, game art, or game design. Personally, I have always found the game art side of learning game development the most difficult.
Now every great indie game, needs a great indie game logo. And what is a lowly indie game dev like myself to do if they are bad at art. Well, that's where the wonderful website of Fiverr comes into play!
Fiverr is a freelancing website where you can find services ranging across pretty much every topic from business to programming to game design and game development. So to help my indie game Castlemancer stand out amongst the other indie games, I decided to spend over $200 on logo designs.
All of the indie game dev designs turned out fantastic, but I also had to throw my indie game dev hat in the ring. Now, I am not nearly as talented of an artist as the artists on Fiverr, but I am half-decent at graphic design. So I was able to put together some art for my Steam page, that I think generally fits the vibe I'm going for.
Remember to vote in the community poll for which logo you think best fits Castlemancer! And comment below what other sorts of game development videos you'd like to see!

I think the one you liked the most looks very generic, but maybe that would be different with a fitting background. With only the logo, I think the 3rd fits the best.

The thing I don't like about all four logos is that all of the artists made castlemancer one uniform color. I would like to see the two words Castle and mancer separated by color, font, or even proper case CastleMancer.

I heard a talk by Chris Zukowski, who is a specialist of marketing games and reviewing Steam page, and he said that even for pixel art games, it's usually better to have a non-pixel art capsule/title.

All the artists did great quality work, but I agree with your top pick (matches the style, and stands out well when small).

Pixelart is not recomended for thumbnail art/logos. Just look at the most popular pixelart games: Celeste, Binding of Isaac, Vampire Survivors, Dead Cells, Wargroove, Moonstone Island. All of them use illustrations and a vector/painted logos (of course there are exceptions, like Stardew Valley or Terraria). Studies say that consumers perceive pixel thumbnails as low quality, so keep that in mind for your own game.

The reasons you listed is pretty much why people tend to shy away from pixel art capsules. You can use pixel art for your title screen and gameplay but the capsule art doesn't have to match your games art. It's like an arcade marquee or a roadside billboard ad. It's a good idea to approach the capsule art as its own thing.

I would never have thought 'vampire/gothic/etc' with the first logo. Even after you brought up the possibility, it's like... if I squint, I guess? If it had been red and black, or a lot of delicate aesthetic details, maybe, but not as is.

That said I think I dig the pixel art styled ones more, because they're giving the user a very immediate signal that the game is pixel art, too.

Ya I really like the aesthetic of the pixel art logos, but I think there was another comment here saying that its generally recommended to go with a non-pixel art logo

I think you should use the art that you made at the end but try to make it in pixel art to fit the art style of your game

I dont think its such a big deal that your logo is pixel art even if your game is, I think you're overthinking it. I would almost reverse your rankings for what stands out to me. Really for a logo you want the one that's most eye catching and you can iterate on making it stand out more on a small thumbnail. I definitely don't think the font and coloring on the logo you made fits, but its fine for a temp one.
