Talking about puzzles (duh) how do we send m. Nelson "our" puzzles?
so Kf6 was a fascinating "double threat" that was going to have checkmate in 2, and Black can't stop both plans. I know it's easy to get caught up in one idea and miss a key feature (Been there, done that). No need to be embarrassed Nelson! It happens to the best of us. We all have blindspots :).

In these sorts of puzzles every piece serves a purpose. The black bishop stops the black rook moving to a square that doesn't block any pawn. Furthermore the black bishop must be a bishop as any other piece would allow the mate in 3 to be stopped
How can they prevent pushing the g4 pawn? Edit: Black moves their bishop one space to unblock their rook and put it behind the pawn.
I don't know why no one notice, but there's a 3 - 5 moves check mate. 1w. It's the common first move rook to a4 1b. then black force to advance pawn a to queen 2w. push b pawn, thus giving double threat 2b. best move is push b pawn for double queen (3 moves if the queen takes the rook, then promote pawn to queen) 3w. threat king using rook to a8 3b. queen at a1 takes the rook at a8 4w. promote pawn to queen while taking the b-queen 4b. protect the king using queen at b1 Then you know what happens, It's not that bad

The point is mate in 3 moves, anything more that that doesn't count.
I couldn't figure out what was wrong with: 1. c7 c1/Q 2. Rc4 Qxc4 3. Rxc4 (any move) 4. c8/Q# Finally realized it didn't satisfy the mate-in-3 requirement!
I know it's not mate in 3 But Can't we slide the rook to a4 then push the pawn To b7 It's like rook a4 They make a queen on a1 Pawn b7 If they take the rook it's mate If they make a queen on b1 Rook a8 check Queen takes on a8 pawn takes queen check Queen b7 blocks and then queen takes queen
Conspiracy Theory: He knew he missed it and just wanted to make a second video. Brilliant Move!
so basically, after you find the first move Kf6, the concept of the puzzle is "use the mate in 2 plan on the file the black rook is standing after black's move". INSANE

I don't know if you really needed to apologize. Still, I did think that puzzle was odd with the rook there and I'm glad you called out your own oversight so that we could see the rest of the solution. Thanks for the video correction.
How did black end up with all those pawns there?
Does that mean that this puzzle now gets first place?
Now, that explains why there is a bishop on g1.
You can also play Rx e4, e-pawn to queen, Rx d5 and black can't defend against both threats. But it feels like this solution was perhaps not intended as it is not very fancy.
@Rocky64

1.Rxe5? doesn't mate in 3: 1...e1=Q 2.Rxd6 and the only threat is 3.Rd8 mate, easily stopped by 2...d1=Q or even 2...Qxe5.
Actually switching back to the original plan is the very theme of the composition.
well i think u also missed something about the second puzzle where in one of the lines the queen moves do different square in the same diagonal , the opponent still has the option to promote and pin our queen u didnt cover that part tho
Why does the puzzle feature a bishop on g8?
Missed the move and won my heart.
Thank you for correcting the puzzle. I like the forced blocking wherever the rook moves to. What a pity this puzzle had to compete with the other one in 1933, resulting in 2nd rank only.

Actually, both of these puzzles were submitted from Hungary! It shows how strong we used to be in chess. The first one was from Budapest, this one from Pesterzsébet (slightly misspelled in the video), which is now also a suburb of Budapest, but in 1933 it was still a separate town.

can someone explain to me why rook to d6 is not a feasible option? if they try make the queen we just push the c pawn, and 1. if they take the rook we get a queen and it's a mate once they sacrifice (cause they have to). 2. If they try to promote another queen on the c file, we just check with the rook, and if they take the rook with the d file queen we take the queen with the c pawn promoting it to a queen therefore delivering the mate. I know I'm probably missing something but can someone explain to me what it is, since I just don't understand. thanks!

@Rocky64

Note the text in blue at 3:37.
If black plays 1...Bh2, the 2 different knight maneuvers are the only 2 ways to win. On any promotion to a knight or bishop on black's first move, either knight maneuver or the 2 move on that file can win, of course 1...e8=N or B then 2. RxPe5 the d rook would mate or if black doesn't capture the rook, then the e rook mates. Thanks for pointing out the crucial feature of the rook blocking it's own promotions.
Thanks for acknowledging it! But you should also put a notice in the original video that links to this one. The reason: people who will find or have found your chanel recently will first watch the original video (youtube suggestion) without knowing the existence of this video, spot the line you missed and comment... for nothing... 3 months after this acknowledgement... like me! Just put a link :)
i saw it but i doubted my abilities as a chess player to comment cause im only 3 years into chess. i saw a1 pawn to prevent horsey line.
Nelson, what is your Fide ID?
but why is the bishop there?
My first idea was move the rook from d4 to c4 to create barrier between black and white pawn on the "c" line, then win the game by promoting c6 pawn.
@lordclockworks1570
Жыл бұрын
That would be mate-in-4 though? You move a rook on c4 (1), Black gets c1 queen, Pawn marches on c7 (2), black captures a rook on c4, and now you need to capture the queen on c4 as the 3d move otherwise she'll capture your pawn-turn-queen on c8.
Now I don't feel so bad when I get careless in my games or puzzles. If an NM like Nelson can be careless, even if it's once in a blue moon, it can certainly happen to any average joe like myself, albeit much more frequently.
2:40 1... e1q allows Qxe4 to delay if 2. Ne7 forcing Ng7 in that case. Is there any reason why Ng7 doesn't work in all cases. Can we forget about Ne7 altogether? Thanks for the update, I missed potential check from black too - nice puzzle.

Yeah, most people usually try to promote 6 of their pawns at the same time, and leaving a rook in front of them to defend them, so this is a pretty common position
Although popularly known as a board game / mind sport of abstract strategy and tactics, Chess is much more than that. It is an art, no less than Music, Painting, Sculpture or writing. In addition, it has connections with other fields such as Mathematics, Computer science, and Psychlogy. And last, but not least, if you're keen on Philosophy and Wisdom, you'll find, as you learn more and more about it, that it is simply packed with a never ending life like lessons book that you can draw from and apply in your day to day,in this journey called existence. For all the above, and much more, Chess as always been and always will be considered one of the most beautiful (even if sometimes cruel) "things" Humanity has ever created.
Rook d6 and if they get a queen to stop it then rook to d7 and if they take you take with the pawn and they can’t stop you from promoting to a queen or rook and checkmating, if they don’t take the rook on d6 then you checkmate by moving it to d8
@Rocky64
Жыл бұрын
This is a mate-in-3 problem and what you suggested simply fails to do it in three moves. After 1.Rxd6? d1=Q!, 2.Rd7 doesn't do anything and even if Black plays a random move like 2...a1=Q, the queen on d1 is still stopping 3.Rd8 mate.
You're the Best Nelson!!!!¡¡¡¡¡¡

There is also several moves that are mate in 4, Rook to a4, Pawn to a1 and promotes obviously so this is easy now Pawn to b1 then rook to a8 then qxa8 then pawn takes a8 and becomes a rook or queen I'll go with rook here, Then obviously queen to b8 to block the check but rxb8 is checkmate without changing plans I am 700 elo and i could see that is there any rebuttal to the move i am quoting?
