I Meditated for 10 Days Nonstop - My Vipassana Retreat Experience (life-changing)

Vipassana is a powerful meditation technique that teaches one to be aware of one's bodily sensations from a non-judgmental place. Originally taught by the Buddha over 2500 years ago to aid others to a more harmonious, peaceful, and compassionate life, there are now over 300 retreat centers worldwide of which thousands of students attend each year.
This video portrays my experience of a 10 day vipassana course. It definitely was not easy, but ultimately I feel I have learned a method of meditation that will bring more balance to my mind and make me a better person overall as I continue to practice everyday.

This community is designed to foster authentic connection among those on the path of personal and spiritual growth. I strongly believe in the idea of power in numbers. Each week, we will host connection calls designed to cultivate friendships among those seeking growth. There will be other events too on there, such as meditation hour, sharing resources, text chat, etc. The community was created in early April 2024, and I am hoping to have the weekly friendship calls up and running by late April! Your participation in these would be huge! Especially in the beginning stages when the community is just getting off the ground. I hope to see you in there!

We never hear “outside” our selves. Vibration hits our ears and changes to electrical/ chemical sensations. This is then interpreted by our brain. So by taking that out of the 10 days we are left with our monkey mind. Which makes itself know in no uncertain ways. We then become more aware of our lack of silence. This applies to all the senses. By reducing the noise and developing our awarness we hopefully will reduce the monopoly of the inner voice/ verbal and visual imagery on our life.

In the 70s I followed an Indian teacher who had been silent for 30 0r more years. I was young and inspired. I developed a routine of waking at 3am and would meditate for 3 hrs. Then I would go to work. Then at night I would sit for another 2 hrs. I did this for about 3 years. In year two I added a complete silence where I would communicate with a chalk board. This silence went on for 7 months and when I broke the silence, I still maintained silence on Wed and on Sunday. This discipline combined with a vegetarian and chaste life was transforming.

Just to add: not every person responds the same way to the same kind of meditation. Even the Buddha knew this, as he often gave custom instructions tailored to a person. If you're curios, there's this Jeffery Martin guy who has done a quite extensive research project on this, which has helped me better understand what happened to me as I went on a retreat.

All the best to you in your future endeavours and congratulations on starting your online community. Love & Blessings.

Good video. I did the goenka retreat in 2018, absolutely loved it, I could have stayed for months. There is a problem with vipasana meditation, that is they teach early to focus on the sensations of airflow through the nostrils, then move on to body scanning. If ultimate truth is the goal then stay with the breath sensations meditation, don't bother with the scanning, although certainly do scanning and other forms of meditation in moderation if you have that need, but the buddha taught breath meditation as the single vehicle necessary for enlightenment. I have experienced samadhi, due to this I know I am not the body, in fact I know "I am" is the best descriptor. I didn't know how to meditate when I experienced samadhi, the first time I was aged 11, I for no know reason focused on a word "cupboard", I kept repeating it, focusing on every inflection then boom, everything opened up, I became everything instantly. This only lasted about 10 minutes. But again at age 49, I was walking to work, I for no known reason decided to create a feeling of unconditional love, I focused on holding this feeling, nearly dropped it, it was quite tough, but I went past the point of being tough, then boom, everything opened up, again, I am everything. This time it lasted almost 3 hours, including while I was at work. There is more to it but the main point is, meditation is not how you position the body, if you close the eyes etc, meditation is all about the mind not the body. Freewill is to do with the mind only, nothing to do with the body, use your freewill to focus the mind and you will see what you are.

Thank you for sharing this. I did two 10-days in UK and Sweden in the 90s and listening to you made me remember things from that experience. Just wanted to say thank you and stay focused 🌱

Goenka does give some more “bookish” knowledge during his discourses at these retreats, but you are right the purpose is mostly to serve realization of self which is beyond anything a book can give you

Thank you for the excellent summary of your experience. I knew little about this type of retreat, so I'm very thankful for your honest insight. I'm very similar to you in that my mind jumps around a lot and I'm often reacting vs. acting! I'm definitely going to consider attending one of these retreats. 🙏

Amazing, so excited for you to keep learning. “I feel like a balanced life is coming into fruition” is progress but still a grasp-ful sentence. Don’t worry about “your” or “balance” or “fruit” (production). Just be.

Great content and video. Very thoroughly and chill. And yes, Vipassana is hard work, but uts totally worth it, imo. If I would win the lottery, I maybe would even start my own Vipassana centers. Because here in Germany, it takes so long to get a free place for a retreat.

he 8th and 9th day of the course are known as Maitri Day, which is dedicated to learning compassion and using the focus gained in the previous 7 days to promote world peace and generate compassion. Although we are all taught to have compassion, it is often not practiced. However, on the 8th and 9th day, you undergo a transformative experience. I still chant the prayer they sing, which doesn’t talk about any god or yourself. The sole focus is on other beings and their well-being. It’s the song of compassion.

Matter (Rupa) Zone (Kalapa) is a smallest unit of matter that lives for 51 smallest moments while causing to appear another zone (Kalapa). The Sakwala Chakra in Sri Lanka is like it.

I had this phase but I no longer follow it. It ends up making you passive to life. Agreed meditation is good but everything in moderation. You got to assert your will or else you are living half the life you are deserved.

10 days course means like military boot camp or crash course, which can't be done for a long time. The teachers of Vipassana won't allow you do so. Yes, your 3rd sentence is the normal practice for the yogis.

When your back is good !! Try to attempt for the second course by sitting straight by keeping the spine straight!! You will notice many things !! The thoughts will be come and go like a passing clouds these thoughts appear when we sit a relax mode !! These are just Shankaras they come and go and we shouldn't give to power to those thoughts!! Hope one day in your entire life to reach Moksha !! Be happy !! Be soulful!!

Wyeth, I am so impressed by you. What a wonderful, detailed and informative explanation of your experience. I tried a Vipassana retreat in 2019 and only made it until day four. I feel a great amount of regret and failure, and one day may attempt it again. Although, like you said, it's extremely difficult. I'm so happy you got to experience it and for the positive benefits it has given you. Thanks for this video.

Your experience was clearly a top-tenth-percentile (at least) success case in trialling the technique. I hope you go back again soon, or perhaps serve on a course - it will be a pleasure to hear your response after a second experience. I also humbly recommend you strongly consider two hours of meditation per day, or at least two half-hours; you might find that time constraints aren't as solid as they appear. Be happy!

Nice experience and very well described. I was interested in somebody other than me taking about Vipassana. Definitely one of the best experience I ever done in my life. Don't know if I would do it again tho, was very difficult to complete it. It opened new realities on my life, I know teach how to meditate to my clients. 10 days is very long in my opinion, 10 min a day would do the work 80% of the time... Good luck for your channel. Keep going!
