Only problem with AO's advice is she may no longer be able to do Uber with a 2-3 thousand dollar car. Not saying it can't be done, just need to make sure it's within their guidlines.

He did not specify a timeline in which the car needed to be sold. She could keep the car, make $2000 per month during the Summer, pay down the debt so that she isn't upside down anymore. When the school year starts sell the car, and take a small personal loan (if needed, other use leftover cash from Uber) to purchase a $2000 - $4000 vehicle and then add the loan to the snowball. Apart from that, it's NOT impossible to find a used vehicle to do Uber Eats, Doordash, Grubhub, Instacart, Postmates or Amazon Flex. He offered very good advice, but I also understand not everyone is a solution focused thinker

Do doordash or grubhub instead, you don't have to have people in your car then. I hated driving people around, but food doesn't have anything to say and it doesn't care what I listen to on the radio.

The car loan doesn’t seem like the problem here, $60k in consumer debt is eating her lunch. A single person should be able to live on $50k a year in Texas.

Exactly. The student loan debt and her intense focus on a non-productive business is the problem. That focus should be spent on frugality and paying off those loans, not finnagling vehicles that actually produce an income stream. They missed it on this call.

Hold on, if she gets a $2000-$3000 car, she won’t be able to Uber. Uber car needs to be 10 years old or less. I highly doubt she can get a car less than 10 years old for $2000-$3000. She can prob do Uber eats or doordash. To substitute for Uber rides..

Uber and DoorDash…. If you really calculate the cost of the 🚗 car, depreciation, all that…. Drivers don’t come up a head. Your mileage might vary. You better use every dollar calculator on your side hustle and see if you are making. Time spent, Car Depreciation, Income earned Tax, Gas spend…… Opportunities cost 💲 As school teacher it might be work as online tutor. No upfront cost…… just time…. There are people who will pay American just to learn English overseas… over online. Fact that she is a teacher is big plus. Online tutoring, on subject to a she knows, Be tutor for english for foreign students… I hope she leverage the skill that she already have. She sounds like kind, understanding, and patient person who has capacity to listen. She is worth more than uber driver who barely makes minimum wage.

I understand. My breaking point was I borrowed money from a friend. A LARGE amount. Albeit they had it but if I had my act together I wouldn’t have to ask on a short period of time and a large amount. I was mortified since I never want to treat friends as a ATM. I paid it back but it was stressful owing the money more than my regular bills.

@@FlamingEmber go to car fax and get an estimate.. then go to dealerships and see what they will offer. When they give you their estimate, if it’s lower than carmax, tell them you have a higher offer with carmax and they will pay you. There is a chip crisis right now and they can’t make many new vehicles so they are paying top dollar for used cars. Now is the time to do it.

I’ve also heard Dave recommend a more lucrative side hustle for teachers like tutoring. Good luck Chantel! You can do this 💪🏻

THANK YOU! I was going to say she can't get a $2k car and still drive for uber! There are plenty of other side hustles out there but come on, they need to realize this and bring it up. Otherwise its one more speedbump that could derail this whole thing and convince her that its not worth it.

It just goes to show we don’t the social supports needed in our community to teach us about financial choices. Listen to your body, if it feels wrong just pause. People (too many) want to take advantage of you not knowing better, to make you in debt forever.

Not a bad idea....but like it or not, it might not be as reliable as Uber or IMO more desirably UberEats/DoorDash/Instacart etc ( I'd perfer the non ppl INSIDE my car with me thing) The reason the delivery-for-hire is higher on the list, for the RIGHT-NOW time being vs the slow-maybe build up gig....is More reliable, steady right-now opps to CREATE 💸 It's also less mentally taxing, just to GRIND it out for said 💰 Once the Debt KILLING stage is over that's a "cute" side stream but right now is hands DIRTY n Deep time... Perhaps not "pretty" but what can be DONE, no "hope", no 'try', what shovel can be picked up and used to DIG, Deep between Tomorrow & X-mas, period! Making nice Quilts & Tutoring might be 'cuter' but we're PAST, cute....it's time to Grind

Car Max is a horrible place to buy a vehicle. In most cases you can buy a brand new car at a dealer for the same or less money than CarMax wants for one of their two year old vehicles.

Problem is though, Uber and Lyft will not allow you to use a cheap vehicle. It has to be only a few years old and cannot be beaten up. So she will have to find a different side job that isn't Uber.

Uber eats or doordash. Car doesn’t have to be that new. I bought a 2012 for 2k (80k miles) and I do it.

She prob won’t be able to Uber with a $2-3k car unless she’s only doing Uber eats. She will likely have to do instacart or another delivery service. Also right now $2-3k cars almost don’t exist. You might find one but it’s going to either need work or have a salvage title plus a ton of miles.

This is horrible advice they gave. You can not do any delivery service with a used car for that cheap honestly. You are looking at huge repair bills if your not able to fix the car yourself. What a nightmare. Uber money = car money...its that simple..

My wife just completed what Anthony advised as far as selling our fairly new truck and getting personal loan for difference. In our case vroom gave us highest amount for our truck. Not an ad for them but really just encouraging to look around for best price our swing was $5k in the amount we were upside down. Get it Chantel

That’s one big problem I notice with the advice given on the Ramsey show. Seems like they always talk so generally rather than look into the specifics of the situation, and in doing so, often miss out on details that make their advice impossible. “Just go deliver pizzas at night and make an extra $20k a year”, is not very helpful advice if you don’t look into the specifics of the situation.

If she’s a teacher, she works 182 days per year and has another 183 days to work another job. No excuse to be broke with so much time on her hands.

I know people making 3500 a month or more doing doordash. Maybe food delivery is a better option

Uber requires the car to be above a certain year. A better option to do with an older vehicle is doordash ubereats grub hub, etc. there is no minimum year for your vehicle on those platforms.

I'm a Special Education teacher and I make good money on the side doing remote tutoring. The bare minimum rate I accept is $55/hour which is extremely generous, you can charge $100+/hour for specialized tutoring

She won’t make $2k extra per month working Uber AND teaching!!! During the summer she can make $2k which means $6k total after which she can maybe make $1k/month on top of her teaching job. Also, she can’t Uber in a $2k car because one, it’s not reliable enough and two, I wouldn’t get into a $2k car as a customer. Unrealistic advice based on unrealistic information. She needs to sell the Cherokee to a private party and use the money to buy a NEW reliable subcompact car like a Corolla. Why? Because it’s reliable, has very low maintenance, AND is presentable to Uber customers. Basically, her solution is to work, either for Uber OR find a better paying teaching job. BUT perhaps what’s more important is how she manages to spend so much money on living expenses. Sounds like she can downsize and cut back on expenses. Also, she shouldn’t have a business right now.

That's what I thought too! I've only ubered one time but I don't want to get picked up in a jalopy that might break down on me. I think this was terrible advice this time. Unrealistic.

This was a great call.

If you are going to sell to get out of an upside-down auto loan, NEVER go to a stealership and avoid the wholesellers. Sell it privately using the classifieds. And buy the next one off the classifieds too (just make sure to look for obvious issues and if it still looks good pay a local repair shop for a mechanical inspection)

Uber is approx 40 to 50hr been doing it 3yrs right now the demand is crazy right now would the absolute best time to do uber

One issue is, if she buys a cash car, and it doesn't meet Uber's requirements for condition, age, etc, she won't be able to do Uber with that car.

Gregg, it won’t. Uber does not allow old cars to be used for their services.

$ 2,500 dollar cars are rarely reliable transportation. Keep the jeep.

Buying from CarMax is lazy. Use them to research prices or test drive and negotiate a better deal with someone who will negotiate.

@@pep590 A big part of that is because their cars are only a couple of years old. Regardless, if you are buying a used car, it's smart to have a trusted mechanic look it over.

What are the odds of finding a $2,500 car that will NOT BE A PROBLEM? Or a $2,500 car that works for Uber? So what happens when she needs to fix the car and has another emergency and then has NO EMERGENCY FUND? She has a brain - that is plenty in her life! Get out of Carmax was the best advice.

@@GabrielGomez-ur2rc thousands of parents all over the U.S. purchase or hand down vehicles worth $2,500 to their sons & daughters. Then the parent's either fix whatever issues come up or make it a teaching moment and fix it together with their kids. $2,500 roadworthy vehicles are out there.

For anyone still living in 2007, just got to your local Craigslist set the max price at $2500 to see what happens. All you're going to find is, "Needs to be towed out. Needs Battery. Ice cold air. Tires newer."

I wish it was as easy as this. Most people want the title when they buy a car. They don't want to wait for you to get approved for a personal loan & then wait for the other bank to send you the title

Doordash doesn’t care about the year of the vehicle as much. Ubereats and grubhub are other options

Uber on a car that costs 2k? I doubt a car like that would qualify. Even doing delivery service can end up costly because the car could need many repairs due to extensive use.

The question I have is how much was the interest rate on the car vs that personal loan that your asking them to take.

My husband just bought a 43k vehicle so he can do the premium rides. He claims it is going to pay for itself. We will see. Don’t do it. There are so many other jobs hiring that are offering bonuses and you won’t have to get into more debt.

She would make more money working summer school during the summer than driving Uber.

Exactly. Here in Dallas my girlfriend (first year teacher) is doing summer school and they're paying $30/hour for 2-4 weeks. They're practically begging for summer school teachers. Could be better than driving for long hours picking up strangers
