I guess I'm just really lucky because I haven't had a single print failure. I'm using Anycubic photon mono and their own resin,so I'm not taking any chances there. Part of the reason why I haven't had failures is probably the fact that about 80% of what I've printed has been pre-supported and sold by bigger names in the scene but even when I've had to support them myself PrusaSlicer has just never let me down with automated supports at 74% density and I've sliced them all using un-altered chitubox premade for photon mono so I'm not doing anything to gamble on faster print times either.

It's nice seeing videos like this and the miscast vlogs that show the actual process behind the creative hobbies. The mistakes shown make it easier for people to collectively troubleshoot issues that likely many people have without making it just seem like everything magically works out. I can imagine alot of people get discouraged when they try to print something and have it fail a dozen times while most videos show things perfectly printed. Oh and for the fdm print coming off the build plate I'd first suggest washing the plate with soap and water to remove oil from fingertips before using hair spray. Also poster/blue tack is good for keeping minis in place when priming.

That filament cracked because you have too much moisture in it. I used to have that problem, mine would do it within a few hours of just sitting without use. What I did to solve it was get a dehumidifier and run it 24/7 in the room with the printers. I leave the rolls on all the time. Now they probably still have moisture in them, but they don't crack and it doesn't affect the prints I do. For you doing smaller prints you may want to try all that but also use a filament dryer.

  • @3DPrintedTabletop

    @3DPrintedTabletop

I've heard of a whole bunch of filament driers, but that idea about the demudifier is something I hadn't considered, that I think is reasonable. I'm gonna try it! Although I'm in Florida and this is the garage, but...hopefully it makes a difference. Thanks for the tip, Jeff!

The struggle is real; push-button replicators aren’t here yet. My aging printer sat idle for 2 months because of an accumulation of problems I couldn’t solve. I finally made time this week to solve them - flashing firmware, soldering a replacement capacitor on the main board, new slicer settings zeroed in again. I think performance is almost back to where it should be.

Friend, you have all the same printers I have. I hated my ender. It took me months to get it right, after nearly $300 in upgrades. I found I had trouble once I upgraded from the mars 2 to the saturn. I too haven't been printing for weeks. It can get frustrating. To combat the brittleness, I started mixing whatever abs like was on sale with tenacious flex at a 5:1 ratio. Now I can drop them from above my head and they bounce. Anyway, thank you for the realness of what the hobby can be like. You helped me immensely when I started, thank you.

People think resin printing is easy just because there are less parameters to fuck up. But I found it to be extremely unforgiving, as the simplest mistakes mess up the entire print and then comes the most humiliating part: cleaning the vat, finding the issue, decontaminating your workstation... and over an hour of just fixing and cleaning up has passed. Then when you finally start the print again, it doesn't stick to the bed for some reason and you have to do it all again. With FDM printing you can at least just walk away; resin printers have to be cleaned out, no matter what. Thanks for putting this video out! Seeing you be kinda disappointed at the simplest prints failing is important to newcomers, as they will think they are too dumb to operate the thing, when sometimes the prints just fail for some reason. Lots of love and good luck to everyone in the community. Our hobby is draining, but the payoff when we get a few consecutive days of perfect prints only make it worth the while!

I feel this. I've been resin printing since september and I've only recently felt like I'm starting to have some competency and the lack of that had really stifled my drive to print more. Granted I also have a huge backlog of unpainted minis, but that's a different issue. What do you do with your different failed prints? I'm trying to figure out uses for a bunch of mine, some I fixed holes with miliput, i think I could turn missing limbs into convincing battle damaged minis, and I'm thinking of trying to see if I can't make more difficult to fix ones into terrain pieces like really degraded statues

I taught myself ZBrush because I wanted to create my own art and 3D print it. After I learned digital sculpting, I became interested in 3D print and bought an Ender3. I put it together and made it work, and printed a bunch of stuff. After a while the Ender gave out and I was so tired. I can tell you all that getting the damn printer to work was harder than learning the software to create the actual sculpts.

SLA failures. A lot of the time I'm printing another copy of something I have successfully printed before with the same exact settings and resin and it fails, it is usually a cloudy fep. actually 99% of my failures is a cloudy fep, I have to look at my fep and move the prints around to avoid the cloudy spots until it's completely scratched up and cloudy then I have to change it. Worst part of SLA printing is changing the FEP.

Isn't that terrible when it happens? I haven't had as much failure with cloudy spots, but I agree: changing the FEP is really rough (especially when it's from a popped hole :X)

Definitely been there. FDM is a taskaster needing babysitting.... All the time. Hate that. Resin is great as long as the supports hold up. But I out printed my ability to keep up in painting. So I decided to stop the printers until I get mostly caught up. About 80 minis to go. A few buildings. Anyway... I feel ya Danny. Some days the hobby simply does you in. LOL.

How do you decide when to resin print a figure versus extrude?

Hey Danny, I have an ender 3 v2 and had similar problems with getting filament in through the extruder, swapper out to an all metal extruder (Like £10 on amazon for me in the UK) and never had any problems since, the upgrade only takes like 20 minutes so i'd recommend it for the sake of never having to place it in the PTFE tube myself again

Get yourself some 5 gallons paint stick and blue tack to prime minis. Cheap, reliable, no wind whatever involved. Keep it up!

Thank you for the 'Real World' of 3d printing! Refreshing. Hey what would happen if you took a bunch of crafters and 3d print personalities and put them in a house together for a few weeks and had them compete against each other? Someone should start a list. I think I might pay to watch those shenanigans, lol!

Evey 3d printing channel should have a video like this. I have seen so many people buy a 3d printer whidout understanding what it really means to operate these, and then using it once or twice.

Try printing with the well known sirayatech 80/20 fast/tenacious mix. You can drop those models onto hard wood flooring and they'll survive almost all the time.

Hey Danny, have you ever tried soaking your resin prints in warm water for like 15-30secs before removing the supports? Also can't wait to see the new stuff!

Great vid! To be honest, I see the spaghetti mess on the FDM printer... And then I see you put on the gloves and eye protection for the resin printer... And I am glad I am not picky enough to want to work with resin. ;-)

Lol I've been spraying before and had the whole thing blow out of my hand. I mean why in the wind? sometimes you just need something undercoated.

Man, I have days like that, I get up, want to print something, and the xy axis isn't moving at all, and for some reason the CR-6 doesn't have a way to get at the motherboard. Absolutely devastating.

They are pricey but if you remove supports after curing I highly recommend gundam hobby nippers, godhands if you can swing the bucks, gundam planet nippers if they're ever back in stock.

Started printing 3D terrain for my games watching your videos and its harder/slower than I expected. A very simple dungeon already consumed 3KG of filament and still not done :(

It does take a long time, but once you've printed it - it's done. The nice thing is you can do other stuff while it's printing (providing it's printing well), and that's something most other hobbies don't have. Once the dungeon is printed, painting it all becomes the next hurdle then, and you'll have new stuff printing so, the cycle begins :D

I have to remove the pla spool every time I'm not printing something. It goes bad really quickly. For priming a just blu-tac the pieces to something long and narrow. Joel havers channel is great ay.

You made the right choice to not burn out; you don't need to catch up, you need to enjoy yourself for the time that you do have! Don't do the thing you think you have to, do the one you want to :D
