“I’M A BAKER/PHONE SEX OPERATOR” - Therapy Gecko

Комедия

A caller kills time waiting for food by telling me about their multiple jobs in baking, tech support, and phone sex.
Then a caller reflects on how a dense relationship with his brother ignited a big move, a former law intern explains a bizarre murder case they worked on, and a final caller keys me in on a deep-rooted secret they’re keeping from their father.
Fire is unsafe, but a lot of fun. I am a gecko.

It's scary how some people are put in such positions where they're willing to tolerate abuse, especially parental figures, to the point they're worried of negatively impacting their relationship by trying to be independent. It's horrible. I understand not wanting to say things that might sabotage the relationship while they're dependent on the person, but if they're able to move out in a yimely manner, it only makes sense to move away from someone who might negatively impact your life for being a. Human person....

I’m similar to Lyle (from what I’ve gathered) that our parents are similar, so it genuinely also perplexes me when full grown adults think they need to ask their parents for permission. Poor girl has been conditioned to it

So about 42:00, just a lil clarification about the statement "Your allowed to me sad". The statement isnt about someone allowing you to feel sad, its more of a reminder that its your right to feel sad, and by comparing your situation to others it can work in making you feel better and changes in the perspective can help make the situation feel better, but a lot of the times that line of thinking doesnt work. Because while the perspective might be the only thing you have, youre doing it a disservice in only thinking of changing of it to fix something instead of understanding it. Like you could be sad for any number reason, it could just be your body decided to make you sad, you could be missing a loved one, you can be disappointed in yourself or something not happening. Like being sad that someone is gone from your life isnt usually going to be fixed by thinking "well little timmy over there lost everyone he loved" while the empathy is great and all, the feeling that you got from the person that your missing isnt gone, you just buried the emotion instead of addressing it. Being sad is part of the human experience, understanding why you're sad so you can then be happy is also part of the human experience, you dont have to immediately find the answer to the reason of why I'm sad. Like you can just be sad for the moment. "Your allowed to be sad" is the reminder that hey, maybe I should understand the perspective that lead me to be sad instead of immediately trying to change it to not be sad.

I take "you're allowed to be sad" to mean that sadness is just a part of being a human. And if that's so, you can allow yourself to feel it when it comes around so that you try to be honest and understand what the loss is about. Sometimes things suck. Life is pretty weird sometimes. There's a lot to learn and a fuck ton of curveballs. Hopefully by letting yourself be sad and trying to invesigate it, you can bypass the trap of feeling sad that you're sad. That's the cycle that really grinds you down...when you don't think you have the right to be sad, you're just hating on yourself and setting yourself up for more selfcritism and...welll....sadness. But also "you;re allowed to be sad" because life can be sad. People feel all types of shit. I'm thinking the level-up is to simultaneously hold sadness and contentement, or even curiosity and joy, at the same time. I read a book called Bittersweet (Susan Cain the day after I watched my dad die. It was about about holding these emotions simultaneously and it resonated, and kind of saved me from sinking too low in a pretty dark time.

Agreed! I think Lyle may be misinterpreting this saying. You certainly don’t need anybody’s permission to be sad, but I think a lot of people unnecessarily feel guilty whenever they are sad because their problems don’t seem as bad others. The phrase is just meant to make sure people don’t invalidate their own feelings
