I love you, Volca FM, for moments like this! (21 min. Less gear, more Fun Jam)
Музыка
It's like a mantra that I repeat over and over again. It's a way of life that I believe in and want to take to anyone who will listen. It's true: fewer devices make you happier and more creative.
My KZread channel is now in its 6th year and we are scratching the 10K subscribers mark. If I can say one thing with certainty, which I have really become aware of in the past few years with you: Everyone who has tried "Less Gear" later confirmed to me that it was the beginning of something completely new for them, a realization which he hadn't had before. Many tell me that they thought they could express themselves through more and more different devices, or synthesizers. They might find out how it all works, which style of music suits them best.
And that's exactly the wrong way.
Buy a synthesizer and practice with it. Every day. Sit down and learn your instrument. find out things Play with heads. And yes, in God's name: just read the instructions if you have to. And then when you are sure, when you know 100%: that's what I want to do. Then you ask yourself if something is still missing to make you happy, maybe a little beatbox or an effect device. This is the right way, it has been confirmed to me so many times.
So today a Single Gear Jam with the Volca FM.
The FM is a double-edged sword. It can do an incredible amount and I can assure you, I spent 30 minutes in the sound editor, that's no fun. But there is. But it's more exciting if you play DEXED sounds on the FM. Maybe just random. And then see what you got. I did that again this week and check it out. There is a wonderful "harp" in the package that I hadn't tried yet. A dream. And so versatile.
And then it just starts. Wait for minute 1:30 and just let yourself be taken on this magical journey.
I wish you wonderful creative moments and magical experiences with your synthesizers.

You are 100% correct. I have a few synthesizers and a small modular rack and I will admit it’s too much. So what I’m doing is picking synthesizer and just sticking with it for the next six months. Learning inside and out and then moving onto the next. And if I feel that, I’m not gelling with something then I’ll just sell it

I’m waking up to this, sitting in the morning sun with a coffee and cigarette . It is rejuvenating my mind as is your philosophy in the description. Volca keys and volca drum, uno drum, microfreak, stereo fx pedals, stereo PA system, Maschine studio, Beatstep Pro, 3d MIDI fighter, rc 505 loopstation , midi footcontrollers, countless vsts and mini lab ….cluttering my mind. All these things are new to me in the last two years…all are daunting and their uses un-mastered. ❤

Happy to see the FM still getting love. I use mine as a bass synth. There are so many syx files available online that I think the FM series offers the most value for users.

True ..
I watched hundreds of gear videos this year so I am also guilty of gear acquisition syndrome in hopes of making better music. I did learn that one major VST and some MIDI controllers make me happier than a room full of gear, but knobs and sliders can make me excited sometimes and inspired a bit. Let's all find a healthy balance and become zen like this beautiful harp piece you gave us.

These videos never fail to inspire. I like the fact that you leave the bum notes in, it makes it more real. I confess that I have let my synths get dusty these last six months. I was getting the hang of the Bass and the Beats but i couldn't get the hang of programming the FM and syncing it up at all. I must have another go after seeing what it can do. Otherwise I will have spent 700 on techy ornaments.

Love this improvised jam, showing how recording an ever evolving loop, can be done on the FM. Just got my Volca FM2, and absolutely loving it. Works so nicely with my Roland J-6 and T-8. Running MIDI out of FM2, into J-6 creates beautiful layers, for looping heaven, and T-8 adds the beat. Next, will try MIDI out of J-6, into FM2.

Nice again Holger, ive done a few audience attended gigs using just the volca keys, also one using only the Dreadbox Nyx and one with just the Microfreak, they were all enjoyable. However I do like the fact that a selection of gear at your disposal enables you to move away from the single tone and tempo aspects of a certain synth, having another avenue to venture down with different tonal capabilities and feels offers more movement on a longer jam session

How many voices can you record in this beast?
@Volcaniced
Жыл бұрын
The Volca FM has up to 4 vioces. The FM 2 has 6 voices.
Well yes, of course. If someone told a person the best way to learn guitar would be to also try to learn flute, piano and drums at the same time, they'd obviously be skeptical. The real reason people do this with electronic music is the constant prodding to buy more gear coming from the companies. The message, so often, from tech is - buy this from us and it will make you X (where X is 'more creative', or 'a better musician' or ... etc etc). Apple have made society incrementally more irritating - and often abusive - by selling the idea that buying an iPhone will turn you into a photographer / videographer. It won't. What it will most likely do is turn you into an invasive dilettante with an ego issue. If you really want to learn to be a photographer, you'd be much better off spending £5 on an old film camera and actually getting intimate with it, learning to value each frame and the moments of life caught therein. Because - as you so rightly point out here - it's pushing against the limitations that really makes us creative. And as possibilities becomes less and less limited, it's on us to provide our own discipline.
@Volcaniced

Oh I like your comment as it reflects exactly what I think and feel too. And yes, I was also exposed to the pressure that the industry is putting on our customers, buy more and you'll be better equipped. Better equipped and definitely better than everyone else who is not equipped. But nobody in the industry tells you: buy an instrument and learn to play it. Why? Because industry doesn't work that way anymore. It used to be different. You bought a synth and it was really expensive and then you had fun with it and above all you had the feeling that it was worth spending time on because the device had a certain value for me. Maybe I had to save for it for a long time or it was a gift I've been waiting for a long time. Today, oh .... today everything is different. Today you can emulate almost anything with VST alone. But I am against that. I like the real, the pure, the manual operation, the feeling, the feeling. And since none of us are millionaires, let's keep it simple. That's why I decided to do as much as possible with as little as possible.
@ukbloke28

@@Volcaniced Yes. It's also a contributory reason at to why so much of the great art and music is made by poor people. A long time ago, I hacked a handheld I had and was able to put unlimited games on it. What happened was that I restlessly flicked through them all, didnt really commit to anything and ended up not playing it at all. I never did it again. I feel for young kids now. The pace of media and the availability of technology due to Moore's law etc means they have insane amounts of possibility but a hugely inhibited focus due to context. We can see way too much.
