My dad held onto my red envelopes for 18 years. Every year he deposited them into an account so they could grow in interest. On my 18th birthday, he gave me a check for around $50,000 and I got a truck for work and college. I hated that he held the money when I was little. But damn I was happy he held it for me when I turned 18.

After I turned 12 I never needed my parents to deposit my money for me, I received a junior bank account from them wherein I could deposit (and withdraw) money by myself. I was never someone who spend lots of money on toys/games or whatever, so my junior account was never empty; I think my parents were lucky to have an easy child in that aspect. Before that, I put all my money in the piggy bank and then my parents went with me to the bank to empy the piggy bank into a savings account they had opened for me.

I can relate to that. At my big brother's wedding, one of my father's friend gave him an envelope containing 101 rupees as a wedding gift. The guy in question was rich, and he basically gave my brother a dollar as wedding gift.
