@@fandomcringebucket Racism, in reality, is a weapon and an instinct. It is not learned or unlearned. Consequently, those who aren't are effectively disarmed and in conflict with their own nature. What's important is not any issues of race, sex or property, but rather the lack of knowledge of the self-defence principle and how it applies to each...those who have not are at the mercy of those who have. For some, the only language they understand is the universal one and the only law they live by is the law of the jungle. So be it. When confronted with the like, one must cease his futile attempt to communicate "the law" or his personal code of ethics. If you have the motivation to preach "don't steal", then I would hope you also have the courage to not be stolen from. And if you are concerned about a poor man, then don't give him a fish out of charity, but instead teach him to fish. Better yet, tell him to go and craft a fishing net and teach himself and those he wants to help. Then he and they will be fed for a lifetime, rather than a day. It is a cruelty to reward dependency as a way of signalling one's supposed virtue.

@@soundyourhooter1523 Yeah, even for the Ancient Greeks, they only really approved of certain specific types of homosexual relationships (such as pederasty, which involved an older man and a younger lover, sometimes even into their teens, and their relationship tended to be half-lovers, half-mentor/student. Today, we'd probably recognize it as grooming or another kind of predatory sexual relationship). Gay relationships between men of equal age and status such as we see today still tended to be frowned upon. One famous example was the Sacred Band of Thebes, a fearsome group of warriors who consisted entirely of gay couples. They were reviled for their behaviour even as they were admired for their martial prowess, so they occupied quite a unique role in the gossip of the age.

I have watched this sketch many times over the years and it is an extremely clever and subtle set of layers like all great comedy. The lines "I hear you're a racist now Father" and "When did you get interested in that type of thing" is very direct and critical and Father Ted has already acknowledged his own guilt. They are lines that could easily be in a serious film or even documentary but here they are delivered at pantomime level of comedy shouted across a field by a local farmer and hit just as hard with a belly laugh punch to the gut. Great writing.

I'm English, moved to Glasgow in 2010. A few days before I moved , my workmate told me Glasgow is the "stab city" of Europe and I wouldn't last a week. The first few days I was petrified every time I spoke to someone, but in 4 years of living in Glasgow, there was only one time anybody ever threatened me. I'm still in Scotland, my home now.
