Many lawyers would advise you NOT to say, "I know I do owe the debt." Especially not on a public forum like KZread. That could be used against you in a court of law.

What about account garnishment then 2 months later received a court document dated for the day the put. The lien on the account and a bit of a backstory we tried paying it but they ignored our calls and emails after the stopped doing the auto pay.

I want to work my deby off SMALLEST to LARGEST... My problem is. One of my LARGEST debts SUED me. So now im in a contract with the DAs office throufh the court to be on a contract to make payments... With those payments there is not enough money to go after my other debts even MINIMAL PAYMENTS!!! So it looks like for the next year I am stuck paying on this bill. Once it's payed off I can jump BACK DOWN to my smaller debts and get them took care of ASAP.... So I'm kinda doing Dave's process but not Quite in order...... I Dont like doing it this way. But they WILL ABSOLUTLY GARNISH MY CHECK. And they will take so much out of my pay.... I won't be able to servive... I work with 3 ppl tgat are being garnished right now....

Decided I'm going to pay off my school debt, got 9 months before graduating and I am going to pay off those lose by then.

Where are you financially 5 years later?

Are you a senior? Is your income Social Security and/or pension? If so, you are judgment proof. Do more research or seek other advice.

If youre paying that, Kevin, do exactly what he said....Get them to make you an offer...most likely theyll land around 4 to 5k...Work your way to 3k and get the settlement offer in writing before paying. And keep your paid receipt

@@yolandaromero1794 I had refinanced my house and I told the law firm from the credit card I owed that I was only able to pay 4000, they told me the least they would take is 4500 so I settled with that. Still cheaper than 8k. You'll have to make a settlement offer to them

When I was thinning out on my Collection Debt I remember doing that just calling and saying Hey can you do a little better what's the best you can do on the biggest one that I had I told the guy in the phone look I'm gonna hang up right now unless you can make me a better deal I don't have that much money so I'm gonna hang up but I'm willing to pay right now and I won't have to do with you and you won't have to do with me anymore and he told me hold on let me ask a manager and then he came back and ask for like 50 or a $100 more and I said deal Haha I remember once I got that Biggest one done it was all downhill from there

Each state has a collection period for debts. My state is one of the worst, in that you can have a collection up to 10 years out. Some are 5 and some are 7. Depending on the size of it, they might not waste time on going to court, especially if the state you're in doesn't conventionally allow collection fees or garnishments.

I don't know why he always disparages the collector or lawyer on the other end. They are not the problem the irresponsible person he is talking to is the problem. Teaching people to have a lack of accountability isn't helpful.

@@barbararepko4824 they have to be because they are so regulated and there's an entire industry of lawyers waiting in line to sue them. Disparaging other people isn't going to fix your irresponsible decisions so you should focus on the problem. YOUR poor decisions.

I don't know why Dave always says bill collectors will clean you out if you give them electronic access to your checking account. Thats completely untrue. They'd be doing you a favor b/c you could just ask for the recording of the call and then youd have proof and they would have to pay off your debt.

@@barbararepko4824 completely false. Do you understand that would be a felony? That literally never happens. They are federally regulated and v required by law to record every call and keep the recording. It would be extremely easy to prove you didn't give them permission to debit your account. The collection agency would be shut down by the end of the week.

@@defectivethreads Just to educate you a little..... every bill collector call is recorded because federal law requires it. It would be the easiest thing in the world to prove you didnt authorize a payment. Have some accountability and quit whining

So John you do know that if they do have access and do something like take the entire amount of the debt from your account what is your recourse? You can sue them for the recording in you know real court with lawyers and such that you pay 2K to represent you. In the suit the collectors(not the original debtors) state they do not actual record their clients, Then the court must give you an order to get it or you have no case. Or OR you can just not be an idiot and do not give out your info and all this is moot. Stop being the idiot John and just play like a sane person would.
