At first I thought Dave was saying they bought the medical debt because they're going to try to collect on it. Then it became apparent that it was a gift. That was mighty kind of him. A lot of folks get into medical debt due to a severe illness or accident, so they're dealing with being sick as well as the bills, which is overwhelming.

Medical debt is the leading cause of foreclosures and it will get much worse. Did you see the Republican plan to get rid of Obama care? If you have any type of pre existing condition, you may not be able to afford health insurance unless it is offered by your company.

sometimes, some people use their debt in unusual ways...i have seen it used to garnish sympathy from others; also seen it used to file for financial assistance; heck, sometimes as an excuse to not work; some even use it as a procrastination tool where they say, once i get out of debt, i can start my life, but don't really want to start it because the pressure/responsibility. For some, erasing their debt actually stresses them out more.

Yes, Dave says, you're the unusual one, "not the normal one," if you don't want to have debt. I live in an area which used to be more "moderate" re $. We have a gazillion malls, stores, there's so much competition to look great, to look like you have money. That you're doing well. Everyone else is probably using debt to be that way lol. I had a friend in college, whose family hsd some professionals, but they were hot & cold re money. My family started doing better financially (it wasn't a lack of financial IQ, it was a company that started being successful after some start up) and she wasn't happy. Oh, ok. I didn't throw it in her face. When she was on a college break, visiting friends, I was working. So when I did have some $ later, and she didn't, she wasn't happy? "Friends," who needs them

In a settlement, the total amount is the total amount, including lawyer fees. Lawyer fees usually get added if they get a judgement. Not only that but most major debt collectors contract with their attorneys and pay a set fee regardless of how long the case takes (most lawyers accept this arrangement because 98% of the time, the case is a default which is little work for the lawyer for a big payout).

When a debt is bought, the debt buyer takes the place of the original creditor. That means they can sue on the debt because now they own is (just as if your home mortgage changes hands). Now, most debts are sold without paperwork because paperwork costs extra. Most of the time (98%), debtors will not answer the case or show up in court and the creditor gets a default judgement that is rubber stamped by the judge without the judge looking at the case. In fact, if you file a decent answer, you can usually get was with a decent settlement or even a win as the system is designed for the low hanging fruit and ins those filing a decent answer are so small, they system can afford to let that one debt go in place of the profit from the 98% that they get judgements for.

God forbid people's situation changes that makes it so they no longer can pay what they used to. You act like people are running up debt with the sole purpose of not paying it back. People go along in life making money and paying bills and then {{BAM!}} life changes. I hope that never happens to you, but it happens to a lot of people.

Did you listen to the whole video, she doesn't have the cash to pay it off...If you're at all familiar with the financial situation for most people in this country, you would know that more than 50 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck! Recently with inflation it has risen to over 60 percent! So what are you talking about stating "just pay it off" as If most people have that kind of money to spare... It's great if you have that kind of money to spare, but in reality, most people don't! So maybe try to think about that before you give simple advice from your perspective such as "just pay it off".
