note: one job at 18/hr allowing 60hr/wk with time and a half overtime = 40x18 + 20x27 = 720+540 = 1260. This would equivalent to two jobs totaling 60hr/wk at 21/hr. Point is, it's not necessarily a matter of who offers the best normal hourly rate, overtime rate is a consideration. (health insurance is too but could be skipped for healthy young man). In the logic of the CC suing: it is unlikely that they truly believe they can get more than the cost. So, it is really a bluff to get you to cough up. Hence, there is room to negotiate.

Since it is a radio call in show the answers are general bite size headline type advice and not getting too deep into the weeds. Only so much can be resolved in a few minutes. The point is to not ignore and pretend the debt doesn't exist until forced to acknowledge them because of a being sued. Call the creditors - they would be more willing to work with you than lose 100%. Once sued collection agencies get involved and it gets much more complicated.
