I Had to Start Over: Feather Fighter Part. 3

I'm making 5,376 layer feather damascus (256 "W" layers)! Feather damascus is very near and dear to me since early in my knifemaking journey feather pattern damascus was one of my most ordered patterns, there were only a small handful of makers, at that time, making feather damascus. It's been a while now since I've made some feather damascus, join me as I pour myself into this new edged-art creation. First off we're forging out a feather damascus fighter with feather damascus fittings and a hunting knife. I'm using sheet metal and the welder to seal off the layers as I forge weld damascus so they're not exposed to atmosphere to achieve super clean forge welds with no flux required. Watch and learn how to make a knife, we start by making my feather pattern damascus.
Watch the whole build here:

I am a full-time Mastersmith knifemaker, and I love my job! I specialize in forged fixed blade knives and also make many other types of edged art.
In March of 2007, I went to the W.F. Moran School of Bladesmithing in Old Washington, Arkansas where I took a two week class on Intro to Bladesmithing under ABS Mastersmiths Burt Gaston and Greg Neely. This is where I learned how to make a blade that would pass the ABS Journeyman Smith Performance Test, after that I took a class on Handles and Guards under ABS Mastersmith Jim Walker where I learned how to make handles out of stag, exotic woods and many other materials.
In June, 2011 I received my Mastersmith Stamp at the Atlanta BLADE Show. Now that I have been granted my MS certification I have a desire to expand my field and continue learning and teaching what I learn, God has given me all the opportunities and teachers that I’ve had and I thank Him for giving me the ability to do something I love.
Follow me on this epic edged art journey!
Thanks for watching
Enjoy!

    I would love to enter but at the slow rate which I'm currently working on and finishing knives, I'd feel guilty for taking so long to finish it if I were to win, especially on a piece like that making sure to do it some justice. It'll definitely be fun to see what it transforms into.

    When I was making knives in the 90s the only help I had was buying all of Bill Moran’s videos on vhs lol. I watched those video tapes at least 50 times each no exaggeration, I had many many blades that had a problem like a crack or bad grind, even wavy warps (when I started using 1095 and ground too thin before quench). I lived on the elk river WV, I bet there’s 50 blades in the river where I’d get mad and throw them in.

    Is there another way to win it. It would an honor to finish that art of a knife with damascus guard and home stabalised olive wood. Also I would love to see In next video something with rose damascus pattern. Have a nice day.

  • @xaytana
    @xaytana4 жыл бұрын

    Hypothetical question, would it be possible to produce damascus as a sheet? I know the tools and forges would need to be highly specialized to do it, but hypothetically, a billet could be formed into a sheet, right? My idea is that damascus has a ton of potential for bringing more character to various items. Vader's helmet, for example, the top part could easily be formed from a few pieces of sheet damascus, and the face piece could be a few pieces welded together. The only thing I can't figure out is how you could make weld seams have a clean look to them; maybe weld then grind the surface back to where it's damascus, but then the patterns might not line up properly. In theory it's a good concept, but in practice it'd probably be difficult to master. I also know etching would become more difficult, but would also become more akin to wood staining; wipe on, let it sit, wipe off. I'd love to test this out myself, but I don't have the money or the space to invest into a metal working shop, let alone making highly specialized equipment for an idea that may not work out.

  • @KyleRoyerKnives

    Hey Brandon great question. No. This can be one of those defining moments in life when we choose to just make it work and hope it comes out ok for the guy coming behind us , or drill a hole in the tang and hang the knife on the wall as a constant reminder of our challenges and victories , and start over til we get it right. There may be more fractures we can not see and the fractures are there for a reason. That reason usually will affect the knife in other areas as well. We believe the blade may be too brittle . Keep Forging On Brandon Glad you’re here with us. Team Royer

    KyleRoyerKnives good point, I hadn’t taken in account that there may be more cracks. I usually find out if a knife has crack when I’m testing the blade before finishing. I’m really glad I came across your channel. Your precision, use of measurement tools, and attention to detail have caused me to seriously step up my game. No offense to other smiths out there but a lot of “eyeballing” and “guestimation” goes on and that’s not how I want to do things! Even if I never cross over into full time knife making I know I can slow down and pay more attention and come out with a knife I’m proud of.
