French production and budget filmed in England (Pinewood studios). The only Hollywood input are most of the actors. That's also why Besson had the final cut in it. Even if his previous film, Leon the professional was shot in New-York, the production is also 100% French. The only time a French director made a big Hollywod movie in the 90's, it was Jean-Pierre Jeunet with Alien Resurrection. Contrary to many people I think it's a good (but not great) film, but Jeunet didn't get the final cut.

Movie didn't "predict" anything. It's an homage by Luc Besson to his childhood influence, the Les Humanoides Associes, the circle of French artists and creators responsible for the massively influential Metal Hurlant / Heavy Metal magazine. The obnoxious character similar to Ruby Rhod's persona appears briefly in the graphic novel The Incal, by Jodorowsky and Moebius in the early 80s. That novel inspired the making of this film.

Props to the dedication for worldbuilding there. Gary Oldman and Tim Roth, in their youth, played the leads in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead". The brilliant Tom Stoppard essentially turned Shakespeare's tragedy "Hamlet" inside-out, so that we follow two minor characters both onstage and backstage, so to speak. While the main action of the play takes place offscreen or in the background, we stick with these two schmucks as they wonder what their purpose is, and follow them into their interactions with Shakespeare's characters before we once again go with R & S off to their own storyline again. And. it. is. funny!!! Clever and inventive beyond belief. In playing with the two characters, the movie plays with the viewers. The only other actor I can think of who made two movies (in this case, during the same year) with such radically different roles is Daniel Day Lewis in 1986, when he was in both "My Beautiful Launderette" and "Room With A View".
My friend and I used to quote this movie all the time!! He was even thinking of being Ruby Rhod for Halloween 🤣🤣🤣
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but when the general tells Leeloo that she needs to develop her communication skills after being told the tube is unbreakable, watch closely just before Leeloo punches through. You can see the 'etching' in the glass where it breaks. Just a fun bit of info.
Yes! I've been waiting for you to do this one! This is one of my top 20 all-time favorite sci-fi flicks! It never gets the credit it deserves. I would also recommend you check out Dark City.

Mary might also want to see Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt together in a sci-fi movie. If so, then she should watch Twelve Monkeys (one of my favorite movies). It's an intense movie, but well worth checking out.
I do a good impersonation of the Aliens walking, when I walk in ski boots....
Hahaha, Mary's glee over the cherry-choking scene was priceless! Yes, one little (Mary) Cherry is bringing down the evil Zorg, lol.
This is, pretty much, an issue of *Heavy Metal* brought to life!
Ahh so many quotable moments. "CHI-KEN!" "SMOKE YOU!!!" "Multi-pass!" "Co-Co-C-Corbin mah man"

Gimme the CASHHHH!!!
Funnily enough, you've recently watched Milla's daughter Ever play the young Natasha Romanoff in Black Widow.
It's one of those "I've watched it 100 times and I still love it" movies
After more than 25 years, "The Fifth Element" still is a vibrant, loud, humurous and kick-ass sci-fi epic, and my favorite Luc Besson movie of all time. "The Fifth Element", "Léon: The Professional" and "La Femme Nikita" are the holy trinity of Luc Besson's films in his prime.💯
No, we can't believe you'd never heard of it either! Multipass

Multipass!
God I love these reactions. I never thought I’d be addicted to watching people watch something I’ve watched before. Insane, but totally happy to have the ability. I remember seeing this movie for the first time in the 90’s as a kid. Such a fun film.
The language Leeloo speaks was invented by her and director Luc Besson, and they used to have conversations in it on set.
Loved this movie. One of Besson's most interesting. Bruce Willis as an ex-soldier turned cab driver (Wild). Tommy 'Tiny' Lister-RIP as The President (Wilder). Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod (Even Wilder). You should check out 'Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets' which is also directed by Luc Besson.
You should watch her in the Resident Evil movies. Also, Ultra Violet.

The Resident Evil films are a great choice for Halloween, b/c zombies

I love that Ultraviolet is getting some love in these comments. Underrated film.
Luc Besson is a very talented, very French director who makes some unusual but great films. If you're not familiar with his other works, I do suggest checking them out.
I consider this one of the best movies ever made. The genre-mix, unique cuts, stellar script (Luc Besson started developing it when he was a teenager), wonderful acting . . .
I love Mila from the Resident Evil movies.
I love how delighted you were when Zorg choked on a cherry. 🍒
So as far as Milla Jovovich she was in Return to the Blue Lagoon back in 1991, two years later she did Dazed and Confused. In '97 she did The Fifth Element which was one of the first movies to showcase her Martial Arts talent. I highly recommend Ultraviolet, and the Resident Evil films that all star Milla and show off her skills as a Martial Artist. They are great action movies although with little comedy.
This movie is legendary, always when you need to get somewhere, you have to show something and say "multipass" :-D
Fun fact... my daughter is named after Bruce Willis's character in this movie. My (late) wife and I decided if we had a boy, he would be "Korbyn". If a girl, "Corbyn". We got a girl. So I have a daughter named "Corbyn". Great name. :)
If you enjoy Luc Besson's scifi aesthetic, then try "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" - it has it's flaws, but visually absolutely stunning.

Beautiful film. I think Cara Delevingne says, "Valerian" 63 times during the film. That got old.
this film, and the back to the future trilogy were the films I would always watch as a kid whenever they were on tv
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is full of surprises. Polly has only a few shots left on the film in her camera. Follow the story to see what is worth a picture.
Is my cat named Leeloo? Maaaybe. Does she have a tiny multipass on her collar? Damn right she does.
This is a movie I’ll watch every time it’s on. In my top five movies, I love it so much.
McDonalds probably signed on for the product placement because it was a Bruce Willis movie... I wonder how they felt about the way their brand and product were used in the film?
Choking on a cherry 🍒 Mary "that's me!" The wish of every man watching lol
Still the dopest opera scene I’ve ever seen. Watched this movie in the theaters when I was a jit. 12:37 Mary tried to take out Zorg…..stealth mode.
Fun fact: When it came out, this movie had the largest on-set explosion ever filmed.

I read that the fire quickly got out of control and they had to call in outside help to put it out. It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out which scene it was. Lets give an applause to the pyrotechnic team. Luc Besson said he wanted a big explosion and Fire, He GOT a big explosion and fire.

@@MatthewPettyST1300 "It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out which scene it was" Clearly the hotel blowing up, I mean, a giant space boat, that explosion big.
The 5th Element is one of the few movies where the hero/protagonist (Dallas) never comes face to face with the villain/antagonist (Zorg). Who was also his boss and fired him.

Dallas also never faces "Mr Shadow". EDIT: Now Leeloo on the other hand...
You did quite well in figuring out Milla Jovovich's name. A lot closer to her pronunciation than many people. I can't remember for sure, which Resident Evil commentary track it was that she literally lays it out for one of the other DVD comentators. Fun fact, the Diva's song was handed to an actual Opera Professional for the audition, and she said "this is impossible" they said "just do the best you can." And in fact she did more of it than they thought was possible.

Hm, I wonder what Malena Ernman could produce if given the same ask.
Mary should have that as her mem where the priest say he's whole Empire comes crashing down because of one small cherry, 😂
Never heard of the fifth element? That's blasphemy!
Fun fact: Milla was 17 during the filming and the final scene and the kiss scene were filmed during her 18th birthday, Milla said in an interview years later that Bruce Willis was her first kiss.

Yeah very funny. Besides the fact she was 21 when the movie was made and 22 when it came out
I'm surprised not to see anyone mention Milla playing the enforcer character in Zoolander.
Milla Jovovich is the star of all the Resident Evil movies.
I love this movie. It's the perfect blend of awesome and cheesy.
One of my favorite!! My niece too we watched it together & laughed & laughed, she wanted my movie I said no way, we laughed some more..lol
29:44 Lola knew there was some naughtiness going on. She disapproves. 🤣
