This is a little story that Kevin Smith likes to tell about how putting the fear of Rickman into his friend Jason Mews inspired him to be a better actor: Dogma, though, we kept impressing on this cat, "You've gotta be topnotch. You are the strong back that's got to carry the movie. You've gotta be funny and on cue all the time. You gotta know your lines. You can't be shy... because we got real actors in the movie this time." "Not like Affleck?" "Not like Affleck." "Who?" "We got Alan Rickman." "Who the fuck's that?" "Alan Rickman. You know, from Die Hard, yippee-kai-yay?" "Bruce Willis?" "No. The other guy. Alan Rickman, he's the villain." "All right. So what?" "Alan Rickman is a British actor. And British actors fucking invented acting. They will chew the scenery around you. He won't put up for 'snoochie boochies' and shit like that. He needs you to be on and fucking topnotch. He's worked with the best. You can't let a dude like this down." As with all the other films, I rehearse with all the actors separately... and Mewes I start with by himself and then work him into the group. So I sit down with Mewes to start rehearsing. And he comes in, no script. I'm like, "Where's your script?" "I don't need it." "What?" "Just try me." So I start reading the lines that aren't Mewes'... and Mewes starts doing his lines without a script. I was like, "That's pretty good." We keep going, and he knows everything. "Did you memorize all your lines?" "Everybody else's too." "Bullshit!" "Try me." So I read Mewes' lines and he reads everybody else's lines. Without a fucking script. And I'm like, "What the fuck, what are you, Rain Man? What the fuck happened, dude? Why did you suddenly become a genius?" "I don't want to piss off that Rickman dude."

The Bible is one of the most mistranslated books of all time. Take something that was translated through Hebrew to Greek to Latin to English and compare it to the original Hebrew and an original translation of what the words meant at the time and you will get two completely different things. When the scribes translated the Greek Septuagint they purposely changed words and wrote entire expanded books trying to push their interpretations. Most people think Elohim and Yahweh are the same thing, but if you read the book of Job in the original Hebrew it says Elohim is the Adversary of Yahweh.
@vincentvoillot6365
Жыл бұрын
@@Mortismors True, but does it matter ? The Coran is not translated and still there more than one interpretation. Whatever you recognize the old testament (the Torah), the Coran, or the old and new testaments (bible), it doesn't change that much It is the same "concept" of the all mighty perfect being with all the philosophical issues that come with. Kevin Smith touched some of them in this movie.
@Mortismors
Жыл бұрын
@@vincentvoillot6365 knowing the correct translation helps. Take Iblis, in Islam he is the devil and was the Adversary to God but he wasn't a fallen Angel he is the first of the Jinn. The whole story of Lucifer rebelling and falling with a third of the Angels is a made up story by those scribes embellishing a previous story about the wicked ones before the flood. If you take the books of Job and first Enoch in the original Hebrew they tell of this Iblis and his sons of Elohim who sinned against the birds and beasts and ate human flesh. These were the ones the flood was sent to wipe out. This Adversary to God this god king who wanted to be the Lord of the World gets remembered as the Devil as the Adversary (Satan). But he's just a mortal king, sure he was so evil he gets remembered through time but without correct translations you get superstitions. And I would argue people believe more in the superstitions than the religions original teachings.

Жыл бұрын
@@Mortismors That's interesting to me. I've been trying to bone up on my religious history and have been wondering if there's a way I can get a legitimate translation from the original texts because I figured it would be a lot easier than trying to learn Hebrew.

@@Mortismors That is not my point, this is still details. Good versus Evil is the duality of men, whatever the protagonist are called. If God is all knowing, being past, present and future, that mean he know everything you did, doing and will do. This include Adam and Eve eating an apple. So he did knew that it will happen and banish them from paradise anyway ? Or did he created them at his "image", with free will (including the possibility of disobeying his order) and didn't knew what they will do ? God cannot be wrong.. So he knew after creating humanity, he will have to kill everyone except Noah and his family ? God cannot be omnipotent and good, there is evil in this world (diseases, natural catastrophes), so he cannot or don't want to stop it. Nothing intelligent created us, proof of it, using the same path for eating and breathing. Any decent engineer would tell you this is dumb. I can go on, but that is not a question of translation or interpretation.

I love this movie. I own it on DVD. The cast is perfect with Chris Rock, Alan Rickman, George Carlin and Alanis Morissette.
When Silent Bob says "no ticket" after throwing them off the train, that's a reference to a classic scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. You should definitely watch that if you haven't yet. Great reaction!
If you watch the scenes with George Carlin as the cardinal, you'll see that he has a band-aid on his ring finger. Kevin Smith said that he's wearing it because George Carlin's wife had recently died, and he couldn't bring himself to take off his wedding ring yet. And since a cardinal wouldn't be married, they had to cover it up for the movie.
Technically, the content of the movie isn't the reason you can't rent or officially stream it anywhere, but I guess it kind of indirectly is. The movie was originally supposed to be released by Miramax in 1998, but Disney (who owned Miramax at the time) didn't want to be associated with it, so they refused to put it out. Then Harvey Weinstein bought the film outright and made a theatrical distribution deal with Lions Gate (who finally released the movie in 1999) and a home media deal with Sony. Both of those deals expired years ago, so the rights reverted to Weinstein. (The Sony DVD and Blu-ray releases are long out of print, but used copies are out there.) According to Kevin Smith, he's tried to buy the movie back, but Weinstein was asking an exorbitant price that he couldn't (and no one else wanted to) pay.

Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back are my favorite Kevin Smith movies, and the only ones I'd watch again and again. They're hilarious and yet this one was very thought provoking. Janeane Garofalo!! She was one of my favorite 90's IT girls. I suggest her movie with Uma Thurman called THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS. If you've ever taken interpersonal communications classes then this movie serves as example after example of the study of it. It's also Janeane humor turned up, yet adorable. 😅
I love this movie so much, fantastic movie overall and everyone acting was on point!!!
It's worth mentioning that Kevin Smith made this movie in an attempt to rediscover his religious faith and that he joined in on a Catholic protest against the movie on opening night. He tried really hard to make good protest signs too.
I went to a catholic high school and for my senior service project, I painted a mural in one of the school classrooms depicting moments in church history, ending with Pope Francis. I painted him doing the Buddy Christ pose from this movie and nobody noticed.
When you are saying "Immaculate Conception" you actually mean the dogma of "Virgin Birth." It is a common error; Immaculate Conception is a different dogma stating that Biblical Mary was conceived without Original Sin (yet another dogma).

Although in the end he went crazy, I always thought that Bartleby was right, God applied a much harsher punishment to them than they really deserved, I mean beyond Loki's rude gesture towards God, he only suggested to his friend to quit his job and take another one that doesn't involve killing, too much punishment for so little
Random memory unlocked watching this. I can still remember where Comedy Central out all the commercial breaks in the TV edit.
This movie is just....splendid.
Possibly Rickman's greatest role!!
This is not only one of my favorite View Askew movies, but this is one of my favorite movies of all time.
I loved the 90's movie scene and I forgot how much clout Kevin Smith had. He went from Clerks to making this in only 5 years.
So excited for this, one of my all-time fav movies!
Clerks 3 turned out to be pretty good ties up the whole story neatly
Love this movie, glad i have it on dvd still. Old kevin smith is so good! Clerks and dogma are two of the funniest movies ever imo.
The song 'still' by Alanis morrissette at the end credits is gorgeous. Beautiful lyrics
OMG one of my All time FAVORITE FILMS =D
Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Next PLEASE!!! Proud member of the Coalition for the Liberation of Itinerant Tree Dwellers 🐵
I rented this & Galaxy Quest at the same time, not knowing Alan Rickman was in both. Was A great movie weekend
"Can we get some applause for Silent Bob?" :)
Chris Rock (Rufus, the guy who fell from the sky and “looks familiar”) has been the most lauded stand-up comic in the US since the 1990s. His movie *Top Five* is my second favorite comedy of this millennium and I highly highly recommend it. I’ll add, the special that rocketed him to super-stardom is called “Bring The Pain”. It is amazing and it would be wonderful to see your reaction to it; but, and this sucks about modern culture, I genuinely think you would feel really uncomfortable being authentic in your reactions if you knew you were going to present it to the world. So maybe you should watch it on your own time. But definitely watch it. And his other specials, too. Most recently he was slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars, which I’m sure you heard about.

Great movie! A true classic! 👍 ❤
Them wings really did a number on alans back yet he was still going hard. Can't even tell the back pain when he takes 'em all to dinner
I remember really liking Dogma. That was also the peak of my Linda Cardellini and Salma Hayek phases.

Are you mixing your Linda actresses up? Linda Cardellini or Linda Fiorentino?

@@L3onOfKings Yes...although I did also have a Cardellini phase, too, but I was older then.
If they had taljed about islam in that way, the moviemakers would be dead.

Bartleby's rant is one of my favorite scenes in cinema.
Not sure if you're aware but Jason Mewes (Jay) is now a twitch streamer, his tag is 'jaymewes'. He streams games and occasionally has Kevin Smith on his channel.
The nun is played by Betty Abernin, who was in Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, a kids' show on public tv in the United States starting in the 1960s.
“But you didn’t say God bless you when I sneezed.” 🤣
Alan Rickman steals every scene he’s in.
When I saw the thumbnail, I got genuinely excited. Dogma is in my top 5 and it doesn't get the attention it deserves.
Silent Bob's line 'No ticket.' Is a quote of Indiana Jones. Dr. Jones threw someone out of a zeppelin and then used the same line to 'calm' the rest of the passengers in the lounge.
