Fun fact, that file you pointed at that is 145MB in size is actually a PSD. The file extension doesn't indicate the type of a file, the file header does. The file header is the first two bytes on the file. For the other files the header is 4949 2a00, typically used by a TIFF. The Balanced Black file is 3842 5053 which is the file header for a PSD.

@@robhallphoto I am not sure what the internal PSD metadata tracks but if you rename it as a PSD and open it in PS you can view the metadata of the file as well as some of the adjustments that were made. Whilst minor, exposure was bumped by 0.05. I assume this was a RAW adjustment made by ACR. I am not certain, but if levels or similar (non-ACR adjustments) I highly doubt these would have been recorded in the PSD internetal metadata. Regardless, it is clear that there is evidence of fraudulent activity.

When Brandon first came out with this product and tried to sell it to all of us I made the comment of why don’t I just turn my strobe light down a couple stops and just get the same effects. But I got told that I am trying to keep a black man from making money and I don’t know what I was talking about. I used to follow his channel and after those comments popped up that I was against him trying to make some money I just stop following him because the black dish was truly a flop in my eyes. Then to see this video you guys come out with takes a lot because obviously you’re gonna get backlash because I got it just for making a comment against it. I see a lot of products that have photographers names attached to it. And then I might not have the name brand Profoto, Wescott, or Broncolor soft boxes that are all over $250. I’ve been truly happy with my Glow softboxes. And the first softbox I spent over $150 for was the Glow Parasnap 36inch softbox which is on my light stand 95% of the time. Do you wanna game changing quick opening softbox try one of them. Now me, I want every small business to do great. But you got a put the work in and sell quality products. this is not one of them.

I think Brandon could have made a product called the Black Dish in name only and it would have been successful. It would be fantastic branding and the products wouldn't need any superfluous claims about intangible traits such as "best" or "softest" light. Just make a standard softbox and call it the Black Dish. They'd sell. Instead he's sunk what I imagine was a significant amount of savings, a loan, or perhaps investor's money, into R&D/Manufacturing/Shipping/Marketing for a product that's not any better than a $20 shoot through umbrella and is DUPING photographers who support it.

Oftentimes these products are not even the "invention" of the photographer. Like many other products, some brands will target individuals for plastering their face on a box in hopes to sell products because said person has a global reach. This is happening too often on KZread and it may just be what happened here. That said, Brandon should have known better and not been motivated by the potential dollars from sales. I do not follow Brandon, but if I did, I would be upset that someone I "looked up to" is out promoting to make a buck on something we know is not a real product. We all know that this product is a joke, it is no different than a shake weight, a scheme. My hope is that Brandon learned his lesson but most importantly, is legally protected because this has grounds for a false advertising lawsuit or worse, a class action. Best of luck.

And constant light sources with no control over the light output/intensity are used in those instances. Therefore, different fabrics are used to control it and make up for the lack of settings on the light source. In, this case when using a strobe on people, the settings can be controlled, therefore you don't need a grey/black fabric/surface to control the intensity because it can be done directly with the settings on the strobe.

No one is debating the quality of his photos. The thing is, the blackdish isn't the reason why they're nice. He'll still produces the same imagery, regardless of the modifier, just as he always has, and still does, with other softboxes. It doesn't solve a problem. It works just like any other softbox, except a loss in strength, and still produces a nice image. All his claims about what it does different are false and that is what is being debated. If a photog is new to the game and doesn't quite understand the science of it all, then they see a great image and are easily convinced. "That looks great! It works!" is their mindset. Experienced photogs look at it and say "it looks like you just used another softbox, it looks like all your other images, black cuts the strength of the light, that will increase my recycle times, I'll be buying a new bulb soon, just change your light settings, let's compare, see they look the same."

Spreads it exactly the same way... just at a much lower intensity... reducing the effective power of your flash in the process. Should stick to shooting eye candy, rather than trying to redefine laws of physics

I would go further and say that because the inefficiency of the black walls the spill around the resistor plate will create an uneven light beam/pattern hitting the diffusion surface ie. a hotspot. Other lighting modifier designers/manufacturers spend time and money and go to great lengths actually defeating that hot spot. BC is in sever denial of both the physics and results. Furthermore he is committing the cardinal sin of photographers -- falling in love with his own work.

The manufacture had produced a defective product by forgetting to add the reflector into the softbox. They didn't want to take the lost so they needed to makeup a gimmick product marketing ploy. They then needed a KZreadr to peddle their product that would stealth under the radar of educated pro photographers. Most of us didn't take the bait. Also most of us didn't have a platform or skill set to make a thorough video to help our community. TY

Brandon says stuff in some of his videos that if you don't know better you would regard as gospel. He once used a large shoot through umbrella in one of his studio lighting videos. The man says - and I shit you not - that the umbrella is not a light modifier as it doesn't modify the light, it simply changes the path of the light *CRINGE*. I couldn't let that one go as a lot of newbies eat his shit up like it's Chic-fil-A or something. He tried to school me when I brought it up in the comments and made himself look even more foolish. I told him that the umbrella is very much a light modifier because when the light passes through it, the light quality changes, which means it's *MODIFIED* and to modify something is to *CHANGE* that thing from its current state. Nobody in the comments section challenged what I said because either (a) they researched it and realized it was true, or (b) it just sounded like common sense really. Either way, it was very telling because his fans typically don't hesitate to come to his defense for most things.

I think it would produce different results when using only outer diffusion and without plate. It would act like a scrim with bare bulb with flagged sides. And it should have more contrast because of single point of light source instead of bounced reflected light from all over inside of softbox. But this BD will work only without plate and with only outer diffusion. Adding plate is ridiculous. It's like covering with hand. It could only work if plate were white and inners of sofbox is glossy, because glossy surfaces reflects. Like transparent glass would reflect light. And I doubt it would be something beautyful.

I bought it a while back and haven't used it yet. I didn't buy it for his hype of it, I wanted to see if the highlights are actually tamer OR if the black surface would produce more contrast (which we now know concretely that it's the latter lol). But when I looked at that same comparison video with the mannequin head I noticed that it increased contrast therefore the highlights were more pronounced than with the other modifier. When I brought this up to him in the comments he oddly replied "I'm glad you caught that!" LOL. Anyone who knows lighting fundamentals knows that a black interior doesn't doesn't make softer light. That's the main line of bullshit he peddles for this modifier (that the black interior makes for softer light). I'm still going to use it for a bit and see if I like the increase in contrast. Photographers lie all the time about their product collabs. When Manny Ortiz brought out his softboxes with Westcott he claimed it was something the photography world never saw before. Westcott and probably at least 10 other companies produce softboxes EXACTLY like his. His does absolutely nothing different than any other of the same design. You're just paying a stupid amount of money to have his name on it. But coming back to the BlackDish, I love contrast but it doesn't necessarily mean I'll like it here. We'll see. Everything you said was spot on. Cheers!

It is a grift though! If someone can be ill-advised into buying such a product based on marketing (hype), then that is on them and speaks to a lack of critical thinking. I dont know who this guy is, but more power to him. Hope he comes out with a whole line of black-is-the-new-lighting products and rides his wave and feeds his family for as long as he can.
