Always liked those Golf GTI's - still look good today! Interesting to know if it did knacker the valves etc.. Look forward to seeing the next vid!
Great project, looking forward to this, I have a mk5 gti as a daily Brilliant idea having both cheap and expensive cars on the channel 👍👍 Definitely appeals to a wider audience 😎 You could go with C get a replacement engine, I would have thought the cheapest route, these cars go for decent money still Vw put a sponge between the wing and liner on the front wings and it rots it … stupid idea 🤦🏻
Nice project Dean. I've rebuilt the heads on two VAG engines over the past year. One a 2004 3.0 V6 Quattro A4 convertible and the other a 2010 1.8TFSI A4. First had timing belt failure the second timing chain failure. Both had bent valves... quite a few of them! Small witness marks on the pistons, all that was needed was new new valves, gaskets and belt / chain kit. Both have run spot on ever since 🙂
Careful when fitting rocker cover, the oil feed to the cam on the far end runs in a channel on the head that you’d think was for durko/sealant but it’s act the oil feed. If you fill the groove in error the head will fail in moments

Sound advice 👍👍
Think rear bumper and the passenger sides door have seen some paint work?
I'm glad you're keeping the cheap car series going, definitely my favourite! Can't wait the next video
Think I would take the plugs out and scope the bores to see if any damage to the pistons would be quicker and cheaper than going straight in with a belt change ?
Nice little purchase :-) looking forward to seeing the verdict on the engine mate. should be a nice motor when ya give her the treatment. Thanks for great content as always mate. happy xmas Bud
Great project! Definitely looking forward to the next video already, don't make us wait too long fella! 👍
Nice to see the foam packer behind the front wings having its usual effect!!! Why VW, why?

Because a sound pad is more expensive than a piece of foam!
a good find pal nice condition for 16yrs old i love them older golf gti a brilliant find for over £1.000,i hope you get it started ,merry xmas 2021 and happy new year 2022 m8 ,keep the great car content going i enjoy it all.....
Very happy with your purchase. Looking forward watching the rest of the series.
Like these cheap car projects as well as the salvage repair stuff. Gti is a good choice and look forward to you bringing this one back to life!
that one piece timing belt cover was made by the Devil
Lovely wee car can't wait for a new project! May I ask what all the green shopping containers are for? I'm guessing servers of some sort. Apologies if I'm over stepping
Looking forward to this, just bought my 5th Mk5 GTI, love them and pretty reliable generally! My first one was a grey 5 door on a 55 plate as well!
Bought my mk4 cheap but still running, still a project. Can't wait to see you get this girl back running.
Great work Dean. Looking forward to this series
Cool you still have the Škoda Octavia! Absolutely true, a real good working horse. Mine passed MOT last week without a single problem. Already 270.000 km on the clock, and 25.000 km last year without any issues. But think yours is a diesel right? Mine is a 2.0 TFSI like the Golf.
I've been watching your video's for almost 2 years now since the White Polo GTI but never have I been more exited after reading one of the titles 😂 Really looking forward to seeing more of this car.
Great project. A good move to feature popular cars that lots of people have owned and other cheap cars that the masses have owned. Look forward to the next one on this.
Nice one Dean that looks a bargain especially if there is no damage in the engine looking foward to the next video on it 👍
Like many have said below: Can't fail with a Golf MK5 GTI - Fast becoming cult classics. Can't wait for future content 👍
Always kinda wanted a Mk5! BUT is it just me or is that rear bumper a wildly different colour from the rest of the car?!
Really looking forward to seeing this beauty fixed up!
Great video as always just keep doing what your doing and carry on 😎😎😎👍👍👍
Are any of the panels the same colour/shade?
Nice tidy motor Dean. Love Mk5 GTI’s, very solid and reliable cars. As others have suggested, endoscope down the plug holes to check the valves out . Should be a smoky motor for someone when she is sorted 👍😎
Always loved the Golf 5 GTI. Looks neat and clean, looking forward to this repait and to get her back on the road.
Nice project and look forward to seeing if it will run. After a new belt 👍💯
Nice one Dean, great vids coming on this I see. High end cars can put you in a money pit fast! Buy some mot failures an flip them for a profit an great content as it's better than unabtainem cars.
Are those tyres the right profile?
Quality I’m looking forward to this one, never had this happen (touch wood) so very interested to actually see what happens when they do snap
Nice little project, always interesting to see if a cam belt issue buggers the engine, or not?

This guy has the tools/resources to find out. I had one go at 80 in a TDI , was advised to “just stick a belt on it” and see how it goes. Down to sheer luck where the engine was in its cycle at the time. I didn’t bother fitting a belt obviously just went to scrap man
Has the cam chain snapped by any chance I loved my Mk5 GTi it was a brilliant car
The cambelt can actually slip a few teeth and your engine won't get damaged. My bro's camchain on his honda hornet 600 had missed one or two teeth on 2 seperate occasions. He fitted a new camchain tensioner and it missed a few teeth again. It turned out the camchain tensioner could not work properly due the camchain itself being stretched. When he fitted a new camchain, everything was ok.
Can you find out if the engine has interference head/valves from VW data?
There has been a bike rack on the back.. That's the cause of the dents on the bootlid.. Pedal dents
Just did a BWA Engine on a '07 Passat Estate, exact same scenario. Pulled head, super light marks on piston. Got two valves replaced (exhaust) and head ever so lightly skimmed. Had fair amount of carbon build up so with the clean it looked brand new. Replaced Chain and tensioner at other end while in there along with injectors cleaned and flowed. Did all necessary 2.0 FSI checks while I was at it , new cam follower for HPFP. Was fairly cheap to have head done, ordered all parts from Rock Auto (Mahle Parts/Victor Reinz) and it goes like absolute stink.... was cheaper to do head refresh than to pull whole motor and swap and I know the history of the engine. It's worth the money to do it. The 2.0 FSI is in my opinion a decent reliable powerplant and good for mods. Pull the head Dean, inspect and assess, it's a good DIY friendly motor compared to the newer stuff and great content. Do the head, swap/paint the front wing and clean her up, coilovers and nicer wheels (Never liked those factory Detroit's) maybe off the shelf downpipe and exhaust... Stage 1 Tune? For reference, the belt let go at 70kph and my wife did try and start it again. I thought it would be horrendous in there. Not so...
It’s amazing how badly these rust in the wings. Interior looks ok other than the drivers bolster. I quite like the Mk5 though (think the Ed30 looks better without the black bumper insert).
would you consider getting a built motor from tsr etc ? something different
Wonder if it's the same timing belt and pulleys from new?
Great car the mk5 gti. Had one for just under a year when they were fairly new. Lovely and reasonably rapid.
loved mine sold it 4 years ago 2005 candy white had it 10 years never missed a beat keep it Marra
A cheap one and an expensive one works for me. Love your videos, keep up the good work. 👍
For such an old example it's in quite good condition Would love to see this back up and running
Looks a decent car, looking forward to this project, cheers Dean .
I'm thinking of buying a 2014 VW Caddy Maxi but have heard a lot of bad reviews of injectors failure and water pump issues.
I'd borescope through the spark plugs openings, but the likelihood of a bent valve is quite high. If you see damage, then removing the head to see the extension of the damage would be the next step. You might get very lucky and be able to replace valves or less lucky rebuilding the head or getting a used one. Either way, I like this kind of down to earth content.
This would definitely have bent the valves, the tolerances on these are so tight that it's physically impossible to save valves on a cambelt failure on these engines.
More on the GTi MK5 please. Just the sort of project/car I’m looking for
Very good choice, I've the same engine on Audi A3
Cheap project car and a salvage car project sound like a good plan Dean. 👍
I had one of those I bought it cheap because the oil pumped stopped working . Fixed it but wish I bought a better one
Cracking little project car!
Check the chain and pulleys at the other end of the cams
Hi Dean liking the videos. Can you not bore scope it to see if you have piston damage? Saves the time of changing the belt to find its damaged just a thought!!
@SavingSalvage

Yeah I’ll probably do that tbf 👍🏽
I've done the cams and pumps on my V10 Phaeton, one of the biggest issues is getting the special tools as VW don't sell some of them anymore and aftermarket ones often don't fit. Plus they are expensive. If you need to use them, reply to this with a way I can contact you. You will need them for that job.
Love the older cars Dean. 👍
Looking forward to the next video on this car
Looking forward to seeing the Touareg!
Look forward to next episode 😎
Mk5 gti has aged well, interior looks modern still. Engine doesn’t have much lag and the dsg is rapid compared to the traditional autos like in the mercs at that time.
Good luck 🙈 just shared the video on VW golf mk5 uk Facebook group to see if old owner was on there🤷
I think the valves are almost certainly bent. If you're not going to take the head off, then I would at least compression test it before actually starting it. If you start it and the valves are buggered, then they could break off and fall into the cylinders potentially causing more damage. Turning it over on the starter for a compression test is still dodgy, but at least the RPM will still be considerably lower than idle. Cheers for the upload as always. Hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Mad i just picked 1 up 2007 same colour dsg sun roof xenons 138k mileage slight engine rattle set of big ends shes perfect paid 800
Great idea budget salvage and high end salvage . It might be twice the work though making the videos . May need an assistant soon 🤔
Good man hope she's good
Snapped cambelt is everyone's nightmare! Most people will try and restart the engine I'd imagine.
29secs in and my guess is timing/burnt valves.
Nice clean car, hopefully easy fix!
Great stuff 👍
Looking forward to this one.
Love my mk5 gti only 76k on the clock 06 plate it’s my baby, bought mine cheap a bloke sold it to me that never used it apparently, went to buy it it was knocking its t..s of( stretched chain 🤮) had a heavy oil in it to try and disguise it anyway fixed it
how much are you selling it for?
I do like the little cheap ones you do 👍🏻
Drop a Pd150 lump into the 1.6 or a bam 225 1.8t.
Suspect engine had 70k cambelt changes with quite fine tolerances. Is 197 bhp after all. Won't be many left one day, load of history and probably quite collectable. Your other GTI however isn't....
More Audi rs's please. A totally rooted C7 would be mint
Love this content
sounds like a coil and new fuse
I'm sure you will sort it 👍
Has anyone ever had a mk5 gti with headlight washers without bi xenon??? Straight to see one with headlight washers and no bi xenon lights
The Mk5 golf was probably the best ever made
The best golf to date IMo
I enjoy these engine projects. My car knowledge is poor, but has improved over the last 3 or 4 years, thanks to a disaster with an Audi, plus watching your videos. Apologies for attempting to use your comments section for advice for the second video running… 2012 S3, groaning sound from front driver side wheel/suspension when driving slowly over speed bumps. Any obvious reason? Thanks in advance.

If it’s over speed bumps I would suggest top mount. But would be hard to say without hearing it 👍🏽

Cheers mate. Pretty much exclusively over speed bumps. Easy fix? Something a pretty switched on electrician could do over Christmas with no ramp, no experience and a socket set?
Time for a new engine! Valves are gone.
Owned one for a few years, brilliant cars to drive
Wow you got good deal was it on bid
I like the Golf GTi / Polo GTI Content :)
I like the idea of a cheap and expensive project.
looks like a good project car
Good luck with the v10, great engine, but the biggest money pit I’ve ever owned 😬
Dont see lot of them now good lock pal
Ok, but we can't wait long for next video 🙂
Curious how bad the carbon build up is on this? Might be worth doing a walnut blast and injector refurb? Definitely following this build 👍 And good luck!
What cheapish VW group car would you recommend to buy? My Octavia tsi has an engine fault and I want to get something new

More please On these bargain cars 😀
