The BMW X5 is a car I've wanted since I was a little kid. That signature BMW powerplant, all wheel drive, and easy to work on is. a pretty compelling package. When I got the chance to pick one up for $1,500 I jumped at it. This one has been well taken care of and at 253,000 miles it doesn't smoke, minimal lifter tick, and only small deferred maintenance issues. I'm going to breath a bit more life into this car, then sell it for $1 for Christmas (I can't legally do a giveaway so it's a very good sale price).

Sold my father's with 300k for 1500 like 6 years ago. Clean and working as it should. Man that lifter tick on a cold start brings me back working on it. Great cars.
Holy crap! As a power rear seat aficionado, I’m almost ashamed to admit I had no idea the first gen X5 had power reclining rear seats until I saw this video. That is awesome.
I've got one of those, an 05 with the 3.0. cooling system, exterior door handles, window regulators completed by me. 135k total miles... Love this car

Yep. I pity the fool who pays $1 for this vehicle. It will be an everlasting nightmare. It is why JR talks about how nice it drives as it does - the durability is sorely lacking. Why so many receipts. I owned a 2006 Saab 9-3 for 12 years, 191,000 miles and tracked what I did to fix it. Next to nothing. Spent a total of $350 on repairs the rest was maintenance which includes the front and valve cover rubber engine seals as those are maintenance items (if you don't count that as maintenance parts cost me another $200).

I always like this generation of X5. Got good strong lines and easily recognizable BMW design. I remember right before they switched to the newer model, I saw one of these at an auto show. It got the panoramic sunroof that I thought was real cool.
I would absolutely LOVE that suv! Been a fan of yours for years. So happy to see how far you’ve come!
This makes me miss my ‘04 X5 that I had back in the early ‘10s. It was the 3.0, had a panoramic moonroof, heated seats & steering wheel and the (to my knowledge) very rare 6 speed manual transmission. I kick myself for letting that car go, miss it often.
I worked on one of these recently with the I6 diesel, it had over 380,000 miles 😱 Btw the lines in the rear side windows are the radio aerial 👍🏻
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
3 жыл бұрын
The lines in the window aren't for the radio they are heating elements to defrost the windows, the antenna is hidden in the little wing where the brake light is. How do I know this well I have this same car and I found out where the antenna was recently, the side windows do warm up as well when switched on.

We got a 07' RAV4 for my work, (back in 2007, maybe 20 miles on odometer) they drove it tell about 270k, then the engine started consuming oil like mad, and the catalytic converts were shot. Seems on the Toyota engines of that era 07-09', the piston rings wear out from the passages getting clogged. It was a design fault, most would fail around the 100k mark if they were going to fail, so getting to 270k on a business vehicle that does minimum of 100 miles a day was not too bad. Rather unfortunate, because the rest of the vehicle was still in remarkably good shape. No rust, (NM car) transmission seemed perfectly fine, A/C still blowing cold. Just a lot of miles as a company vehicle.

Love them! I had a 3 litre diesel (That engine was super reliable, probably the most reliable part of the car) 2001 X5 for about 3 years and loved it. It didnt have the rear power reclining seats or the sunroof but pretty much had everything else. Sold it with 126000 miles on it and still on the original motor and trans. It had a problem I never managed to get fixed, in summer after 10 minutes drive it would beep and say STOP OIL PRESSURE! but it must have been a sensor.

Hey JR, that heavy pedal feel you mentioned is the adaptive transmission. You can reset it by following these steps: 1 ) hit start button once to turn on power (Don't start the engine) 2) then press the accelerator down to the floor for 5 sec. 3) then hit start button once to turn off power. 4) then remove foot from accelerator. 5) then waite for 2 minutes.

Great vid, Ski resort I used to work for got these as company cars (Sponsors) Great winter ride!
We could really use that X-5, our 99 Denali is getting very long in the tooth! Thanks for the great content! Merry Christmas!
I order a 2004 X5 in Sterling Gray, fully optioned and I still drive it daily. It only has 85k miles but drives exactly the way it did when it was new. No major issues. A few minor oil leaks which were easy fixes. FYI, they don’t have auto high beams but do have auto headlights. Also, the grids in the left rear quarter glass is not defrost, that is the antenna.
It has headlight washers so it's probably got Xenon headlights. The radiator expansion tank is notorious for splitting, plus there is an additional thermostat in the same region. I sold heaps as a BMW dealer parts interpreter. There was also an exhaust retrofit kit, which could alter the appearance to make the car look like a V8.
Can confirm, Harrys is awesome!
Loved this video and so amazed an old BMW SUV can do 250k and still runs! 😱

I am envious of his tool selection. Recommend that he set up a Amazon link so he can take advantage of my purchases.
It looks aweseome!
Whoever gets this is getting a hell of a deal. Not only serviced but fixed properly before getting it from a damn good mechanic. Wish I could make an offer
I bought a 2001 X5 5 speed manual for $300. Replaced the clutch and it runs beautifully. 240k and keeps on putting along.
A 253K mile BMW, that's impressive! And that stack of service records looks about right for a car of that mileage, assuming it was well maintained. This looks like an interesting project, you're going to have to pour some money into parts for this one, though.
Nice to see Gabe . They are know for ... well a few issues.lol
That sound with the cooling system I bet is just a worn out expansion tank cap seal and these are easy and cheap to replace, since the expansion tank doesn't have a split down the right side I'd say thats been replaced before and its possibly still got life left in it, but if working on the cooling system its best to replace it.
I would expect a BMW with that many miles to be in terrible condition but it seems like someone took it to the dealership and looked after it except the exterior as it seems it hadn't been washed in a while. I think if it has very little problems with that many miles it deserves to be saved. I also love the tailgate/trunk.
Clean possible corrosion out of the bulb sockets that's throwing high resistance at the LCM... measure out o-ring dimensions from the coolant hose fittings and buy new ones for a couple bucks... How's the thrust arm bushings look with that front tire wear? I can't believe the pixels on the dash and radio/climate all work! BTW what model Autel is that, really considering replacing all my bmw/vag/etc specific scan tools with a single model.
Sorta doubt it was the first, but the Lexus LS400 had a power tilting and optional power telescoping steering wheel in... 1990. Of course most of them don't work anymore because those early Lexus were electrical nightmares (or are now because of failing capacitors in literally every circuit board on every module on the car). Somewhat different in implementation, but the 70s S-Class had a power reclining and heated rear seat, while the front seats were fully manual lol.
I just bought a beautiful burgundy X5 it has M style chrome rims . It’s my beater but it does feel or look like a beater . The X5 is underrated

I've got a 2006 version of this. Great car but some issues. For one, it does not like city driving. Can have issues with condensation build up in the intake which can freeze and detonate the engine....mine did...hence ..new engine and catch can system to help avoid this. Door carriers break because people pull out on handles and not up. Airbag seat occupancy pads go bad...may be under a recall. Mine was not but got a $36 override box from eBay and solved it, Common issue. Steering angle sensors go bad, yaw sensors go bad. Random weird electrical gremlins that come and go. Overall, though, a good car. Cant find anything close in comfort and style for the money. My son drives it and loves it.
