I am a dealer tech for Mercedes, and I just want to say you nailed it on the head with your rant on dealers. I’ve been in the game over 19 years now, and I can honestly say it’s a different world! All the dealers are corporate owned now. The pride in ownership of these dealers is gone. They are ran by bean counters and under paid “ managers” that couldn’t care less about the customer. The pressure to produce, and lack of training is a killer.

Gonna say, I owned one of these X5 models bought of my cousin's wife after he died. Loved the engine, terrible fuel economy and breaking plastic parts, etc. What pissed me off was the battery went bad and it is located in the back under the spare, under bolts. @@markstevens1729 Yet again, we have another American who only likes GM and Ford products. Cars like these are not cheap, they need preventive maintenance which is more expensive than other brands and they also have maintenance intervals, which are made for reliability reasons - you don't want to slack on them. These cars depreciate and when you have Ferrari-priced maintenance in a Toyota-priced car, you're asking for it. People buy these cheap, except cheap maintenance prices, but realise they can't afford it, so the cars break and break and come to a point where it costs an arm and a leg to fix and get right. They then get sold on and bought by people like Hoovie, who rants about their reliability. Smh American people...

After you own them and they are out of warranty, you then see why they lost two world wars. My 2002 330CI was gorgeous, until the sunroof broke, the electrical issues, and the interior glue started falling apart. The sagging headliner was a sign that the car needed to go. Right now, I know a mech who charges $1200 for a 4 wheel brake job including rotors (not calipers) for a Ford F150 pickup and the dealer charges $1400 per axle. If there are no issues the parts cost him $300 and he can bang it off in about an hour.

Perhaps your onto something BUT if dealers only sold cars lots of them would close down because many break even with the combo one or the other they would die slowly. But I do agree with the current stigma that is car dealer ships they should separate them so they don’t constantly make your car sound like it’s so bad and junky that it’s time to get a new one. You don’t understand how many times I hear ppl say “yeah I took my car to the dealer and they say it’s so bad I need to get a new one, it’s time” that’s like a car dealer that doesn’t have a “sale” going on, when isn’t it “time” to get a new car lol if the dealership tells you your car is tok far gone and it’s time for a new one then immediately ask for the print out of what’s wrong and proceed to take it to another repair shop immediately

@@B0xlife1 I don't think dealerships barely make money selling new cars, I don't know if they changed things but 20 yrs ago when I went to mechanics school, my small business management teacher who used to sell caddys, as part of his class curiculum used the example of this chevy dealership on the high way it was huge. He said the guy who opened it in the late fifties grew it to it's size he managed it and even sold cars into his seventies until he died. His two sons inherited it but wanted nothing to do with selling cars so they hired someone to run it and the only time they stepped foot in there was twice a year to collect a high six or low eight figure check. He explained how they got that check was every car that gm sent the had a certain amount of extra money set aside, say 1000 bucks a vehicle. Everyday it remained unsold gm would deduct a certain amount and when it sold they would get that extra money on top of the mark up for the car, if they were to have a high turn over like that place did they could earn millions a year. They may have changed how they do it now after the bankruptcy and all.

I've learned that the trick to owning older BMWs is that you'd better know how to turn wrenches. We currently have an e36, e39, and an e53 in the family. All have issues, but they are loveable vehicles. Don't want any newer ones, though.

I agree. I work as a mechanic and drive BMWs because I avoid the steep stealership repair costs and fix them myself. My gf and I owned 3 between us. I work specifically at a Toyota dealership. They’re more reliable cars but I would never buy one myself because they don’t have personality.

E36 M3 owner here. Haven't had major issues. Replaced a bunch of old rubber hoses because it had to be done. Starter, alternator, took care of fluid leaks and currently working on suspension bushings. Other than that I love the shit out of my car.

Agree 100%. E53 3.0 and E85 Z4 owner here. Both with M54 engines. I don’t want to let them go. Fairly easy to repair and maintain.

I really enjoyed the discussion on tech and dealers and you said it spot on! although I will say it's warranted to ask for an hour to "see why the check engine light is on." If they had just said "tell me the codes" that would be different. But it's finding out why those codes turned on that is the $140. Just my .02

Love this collection you're building. I would expand it to include a 750 iL, a 530/540 touring, and a 3 series sedan and touring, and another clownshoe for the ultimate lineup.

I have a 1991 Lexus LS 400 that I used to take to the Lexus dealer for service (I no longer do, and I go to an independent specialist now). The Lexus dealer I used to go to has two inspections, a complimentary inspection they do along with every service, and a more in-depth inspection that costs over $300. The complimentary inspection is a quick visual inspection, and they don't go much into detail. They've missed many issues that I know this car had at the time. In addition, the service advisor told me that they are required to take the value of the car into account when recommending repairs. My LS 400 recently needed about $2000 worth of suspension work simply due to wear and tear and age, and the dealer never recommended those things, since the cost of repairs would come close to the value of the car. Recently, I have also noticed that the Lexus dealer has had a huge turnover of technicians, and the new technicians are not familiar with older cars at all. They make mistakes, and cannot answer basic questions I have about things the car may need.
