HVAC - Direct Fired Make Up Air Unit

When it comes to make up air units, there are a couple of different types. Direct fired, like in the video, and indirect fired. HVAC technicians should be aware of the difference. Direct fired make up air units have the burner mounted in the air stream, the products of combustion are dumped into the space. DF units must be mechanically interlocked with an exhaust fan(s) and are commonly used in kitchens and warehouse applications. Indirect fired make up air units use a burner assembly that includes a heat exchanger, a common application for this type of unit is in multi story buildings for pressurizing hallways. Happy HVACing

    Thank you for actually showing each component and explaining in detail. I've seen videos similar to this with no in-depth explanation.

    Code in Canada states filters are to be metal frame. If the cardboard gets wet or plugged they can be sucked into burner and set fire.

    Hello Just a brief suggestion it is possible you air pressure differential switches are no set up correctlly unless you had the low jumped out. The reason I say this is normally the flame should drop out on low differential if the door is that wide open. Good video

    How many BTUs does that burner make and what's the combined CFM of the exhaust fans? Looks like a clean burning flame for so much turbulence.

    Those burner eye windows are useless in those places, yes you can see flame sometimes but you can't see the full length of the burner, especially for setting low fire. Captiveaire does this, 👍, Engair junk does not amongst others.

    At 00:38 it’s not an Economizers and at 01:15 the vertical filter position provide better static pressure since it’s in a vertical position and is more rigid.

  • @HVACKnowItAll

    @HVACKnowItAll

    Who said it was an economizer?? The filters definitely have better structure in vertical position, what do you mean by "better" static pressure? If you mean lower, I haven't seen any evidence to support that even with a magnehelic attached.

  • @ronpowdrell6608

    Texture6. On a make up air unit we don’t worry about static pressure cause there is very little duct work attached. Economizers are attached to a package unit to provide free cooling. It’s controlled by temperature/empathy control.
