HVAC Basics: Electricity, Procedures & Service - Finding Common Start Run CSR on a Compressor

In this video we show how to find common, start and run on a R-410a compressor. I also show a cut open reciprocating compressor from a refrigeration unit that has the motor removed and connected to show the run and start winding exposed. You can see the crankshaft, piston and reciprocating motion and why the capacitor is used. How to find the compressor wire and CSR on a condensing unit.

great video. I really liked the open compressor explanation. I have one question. you powered the compressor with 240 volts that means 120v goes to common and 120v goes to run. you touched the start terminal with 120 volts and it started. did you get the voltage for the start terminal from the common 120 volt or the run 120 volt ? or does it matter which leg of power you use to tap on the start terminal? does my question make sence?

Thanks for watching and to answer your question: it's a 120v compressor. (It also works with 240v compressors) For this compressor the common terminal is connected to the neutral wire from the power source and the hot wire from the power source is wired directly to the run terminal. I split the hot wire from the power source and that is what you see me tap together with the screwdriver to energize the start winding. I learned this trick from Doolin's Troubleshooters Bible. Great book and easy read, unlike most of the other HVAC text. Look for a used copy online. Does this answer your question? Thanks again!

The Run wire is the red wire which is 1.4 and the Run winding is the smaller of the two winding inside the compressor.

I thought the start winding had smaller wire and the run winding had thicker wire

Jenny Leung certainly know what you are talking about the way the view floats about as though I am stones but I think the cameraman man v did pretty good in that he was trying to catch up focusing on the clip board , the compressor contact our host did move around fast
