Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

The difficulty is to start. cleaning is the idea in mind but never get out of the bed😂😂
When pressed for time or fatigued I’ve started using the “reduce scope” approach from Atomic Habits. Doing less but staying on schedule helps me with consistency and momentum. 50 minutes on the treadmill is great, 25 minutes is decent, 0 minutes is bad. I’m not a trained scientist but it makes sense.

This sounds very helpful! My version of this is going to bed earlier if I feel too stressed by my circumstances.
This is so true. I was so productive where I lived. I woke up early, could do my job at work in 2 hours and be free to do whatever else I needed (studying and other projects), was eating regular meals and sleeping better and feeling good with myself. Then I had to leave because of other person that shared de apartment, and moved back to my parents because I couldn't find any place to rent. Now my depression is back, losing all motivation to live, I lost 5kg (which is a lot because I'm underweight), I can't function at work, which led to the hiring of more people, and this severely impacted my income, and now even if I wanted I can't afford to live anywhere else but at my parents. It went downhill really, really fast, going back to the place where all my traumas begun and where people try to get me down every chance they get.

Habits are built through repetition, but you can certainly modify your environment to create different incentives / remove temptations

For me, I try to avoid negative people and it does mean I have to isolate myself (sometimes it literally means it, sometimes it just means you spend more time alone than with negative people)

I have hyperlexia and because of that, I've had an obsession with books since I was very young, and I only met a friend who liked to read when I was already 19 years old. Realizing that my friends didn't have the slightest interest in the most important thing for me (reading), I didn't talk about it. I'm 33 years old, I learned my second language (Italian) as a child, self-taught. And when I say I was a kid, I was 9 years old. I never told anyone other than my parents, they bought the books. When I was 12 I decided to study Latin, one day I was studying and a friend of my father came and asked what I was doing and he went on to say that I would never learn that way and how difficult it was. I speak Latin. English is my fifth language. I knew that if I spoke about learning Italian on my own people would try to ruin it, try to convince me that my knowledge was insufficient and undermine my self-confidence. I don't use Italian for anything in my day to day life, I took a proficiency test last december and my level is B1 (intermediate). Do not let these people in, sometimes we can not keep them out of our lives 100% but we can let them out of our head and our goals.

@@hoanghiem8461 That's the best way ! We're on the same page 😊 i also sometimes get stuck with negative people but then i realize it's not a wise decision to give importance to temporary wasteful things but what's meaningful is focusing on permanent long lasting fulfillment.

Since you're an obsessive book reader i would like to ask you about some best books to read for tackling discouragement & inaction especially in the face of adversity or uncertainty.. fiction & non-fiction both as i also have developed the habit of reading whenever i get peaceful time.

Great video ! Cleaning my house for new years actually ended up clearing my mind so much afterwards. Something about seeing a cleaner house gave me some extra energy

I learned a lot about coding and stuff from your videos I didn't know anything and I was deciding on going into some kind of Tech so I am thankful thanks and I am planning on doing certifications
I have been straight edge all my life and I have been applying the same drugs-abstinence principle to my diet: reducing sugar, carb, bad oils (treating them as if they are addictive and harmful drugs). This helped me so much in cutting out bad food.

Tina - really useful tips in this video. You were talking a bit faster than usual so had to slow it down some to catch everything :)
I don't know if you'll read this but if you are interested in this mindset of "changing your surroundings and changing your behavioral patterns aka habits" ... keep reading, a long time ago I listen to a person who recommended changing your furniture, selling one used and buy a new one, so you see new items, also move items rearrange them in different locations and positions, so you trick your brain like you are moving to a new apartment or a new room. If you don't have the money to do this, just move things around, paint your walls, put up a lot of posters or pictures on a wall that is empty or if they are already full of things go the other way and become minimalistic, etc. I think you get the idea. If you could trick your brain into thinking that always has to adapt to a new space it is more difficult for the old habit to come back. This is cheaper than moving around to different apartments besides just by doing this you are constantly reminding to your unconscious mind that you don't want to go back to your old ways. Hope it helps

Yeah, I rearrange my room every couple or few months because I get bored of it and it's just uncomfortable to be in. Once I change it up the "new" feeling of it, it helps me feel better.
Doing push ups works so well as a stress reliever for me too! Also, it gives me better looking chest and shoulders so that's a nice bonus I guess.

Hi tina, I suck, like really bad at math even with basic arithmetic, but im really interested in data science/analysis. Would i be able to do it? Im also really interested in using these skills to help people, not just businesses, so I don't really know if this could be a good path for me. Im already 22 and I feel like its too late to re-learn math and statistics.

You can do it, Pablo! I started learning statistics a year ago when I was 26 and I also thought I sucked at math and for sure I suck at basic arithmetic too! Mindset is everything - if you're truly interested in it, you'll absorb more than you know. I've since taken and passed Calc 1 with an A and got the John Hopkins Data Science Cert on Coursera :)

I struggle with procrastination and I trying to find realistic and manageable ways to help me shift that issue into a more productive one.

Thank you :D I've noticed that if I put my snacks in the cabinet, I would probably forget that I have those. And if i put them on the work table, I will eat it the same day. Now I realised another thing. I always have ice cream, but I always need to go to the kitchen and take it. Same with apples. They are also in the kitchen, but I never crave for apples, and even if I think of them it's like "nah, I'm too lazy to move for apples". Now I understand that instead of putting snacks on the table I should put apples. I think I will make a challenge with snacks and will put them in the moms room :D so it would be more difficult for me to get them. These strategies sound so obvious but damn it, they work :D
Hi everyone, I studied a python course and currently studying the CS50 intro course. I have a huge problem with my programming journey. I actually understand up to %90 of the things I study and sometimes find them easy and obvious, but when I start solving problems and writing code I feel lost and don't know what to do even though my pseudocode on the paper works, but when writing code I just can't finish any problem. Can someone who had the same experience tell me what to do in this terrible situation

Practice. It's completely normal to feel overwhelmed when learning a new programming language. There are plenty of websites that offer tests and problem-solving challenges; try those before you try to write blocks of code that you don't understand. Just keep practicing and it will become easier!

@@ambrishdubey2241 It very much depends on how you learn; only you can answer that. Some people like projects, others prefer learning how to solve problems (computational thinking). Both will give you the same skills.
So, I can admit - I am addicted to Video Games. I think this proves that - if I just put a blanket over my PC, maybe, I will use it less. And when I do want to *intentionally* play video games - like, one hour or so a day, I can take the blanket off. But, at least it's planned relaxation, in my opinion. Despite this - I usually play games at the *start* of my day recently. And, this isn't great because - I'm using that initial energy that I could be using on other things. I would like to just have, a room with my PC in it that I go into less. I need my PC sometimes - for art, editing, online creation, bla bla bla. Usually though, I end up playing games. I live in a small room though, since I'm student coms, so this just isn't possible. Same with any of my addictions. I have been addicted to VR, and, when I put my headset in a cupboard - I just hop on less! It's like how people say, if you put your phone in a cupboard you're less likely to use it. I'd also like to study more so, I'll keep in mind what you said! Seems pretty helpful. Thanks for this video. At first I honestly thought it'd just be "clean your room" or something. This was actually helpful in how environment can affect your habits. Appreciate it Tina!

I put my PS4 under my bed and started reading books I was doing so good and seeing improvements but I got stressed because I live with a narcissist so I wanted to escape the anxiety so I put my PS4 back now my playstation friends are having drama online and now I watching this video and right now I'm gonna put my PS4 back under my bed and let it collect dust again I h@te this cycle here we go again smh.
