For a native English speaker you have a good pronunciation of Dutch words.
Een gat in de lucht springen. (To jump a hole in the air).

Born and raised in Ottawa Ontario from the age of 10 immigrated in 1980 to the Netherlands. As a child I picked up the language within a week. The Dutch grammar isn’t that easy even for the Dutch people. I have to say your Dutch pronunciation is better than my sister. She sounds like Berry Stevins 😂. Yes, was also going to comment that the helaas pindakaas saying is not just saying it is too bad. It also contains a small teasing undertone. As in that the person who says this might not mind it as much as the other. Or it can be criticizing the other person for complaining about something.

“Je borst natmaken” is to prepare for a challenge ahead. It (most likely) originates from a very Dutch activity: swimming. To prepare for the cold water, people were advised to “wet their chest” to acclimatise a bit. Their are multiple references in literature, dating back to the early 1800s.

Careful with using "Weet ik veel". You aren't just saying " I don't know". What You are actually saying is " I don't know, why on earth are You asking me this question?" It's an irritated response. I don't know = "Ik heb geen idee/Dat weet ik niet." is the polite way.

Ik vind "een luchtje scheppen" ook altijd wel leuk 😁 Let's go scoop some air 😂
I just recently discovered that there so many idioms in our language, that it's impossible to have the shortest chat without using any. Dutch really must be a nightmarish language to learn for foreigners.
Very well explained.
Wat is je Nederlands goed zeg!!!
Hey thanks! I learned a few new ones!!
good explanations :)
This is very funny. I have native english speaking co-workers. That's how I found out how many expressions we have in dutch. And I can go on for hours. We had much fun trying to explain those to our co-workers.
Your prononciation is really heerlijk! Makes us rethink our silly language. Thanks!
I’d love to see a similar video about interjections & maybe onomatopoeias like hé/hè/héhé, ehm, wauw, mwa, plons, oeps, and more. I never know if I can use words like ouch, uh oh, etc.
A few expressions with a more historical background: "Praten (lullen) als Brugman", "Je ergens met een jantje-van-leiden van af maken", "Tot Sint Juttemis wachten" and "Een huishouden van Jan Steen hebben".
Je gaat als een speer! Fantastisch!
I find it amazing that you've found so many real life examples ...
The expression ‘helaas, pindakaas’ is a relative young expression. On ensie,nl I found that It was probably Paul de Leeuw that made it popular in 1987. But it was used locally earlier. I remember that it became in use. And that coach using the expression was funny, because it more youth language at that time.
I'd recommend looking into the 1559 painting from Pieter Breugel... It portrays a hundred Dutch/Flemish proverbs of which many are still in use...its a phenomenal look into our combined culture.
In Belgian Dutch ("Flemish"), we use almost all of them as frequent, but witch some exception. The first one we only use if we imitate a Dutch person, the second one is completely unknown, 5 does sound a bit Dutchy, but is used too, I don't hear 18 either.
Less obvious are "vals plat" en "gelijk is ongelijk", maybe you're able to figure out what they mean. My new favorite is "lekker voor je".
0:45 Jip en Janneke were two characters made up by Annie M.G. Schmidt in the fifties. She is our Astrid Lindgren. The stories were accompanied by illustrations by Fiep Westendorp, which were simple black and white drawings. She is a national treasure who wrote plays Tv-series etc. She stood out by being herself and being a little bit naughty even in her childrens books.
Mooi - beautiful! 🇳🇱 ik snap geen ...I don't understand anything but the saying about "fall with nose in the butter" - someone ended up in a fortunate situation- this saying sounds cool/ logical. Please share more sayings Danielle! Bedankt! ❤️

Hihi zo leuk!
"achter de rug hebben": other body parts applicable here are hand() or ellebogen(elbows). "aan de hand": similar like you have in English "at hand" or "on hand", but with different meaning ofc.
De laatste loodjes, clearly stems from our maritime hey day. Ships had to ballasted out and trimmed for balance with heavy weight. The last of these weights usually were put in a place where they were needed for optimal trimming. That was always done last, when all the cargo was put in. Mostly this entailed putting a part of said cargo aside (so getting the straps of and pulling it aside) putting the led weights in, then puting the cargo back and strapping it up. Hopefully getting it right in one. If not... Hence, the last leds, weigh the heaviest. They gave the most bother.
Very nicely done! I think we could go on forever with missing sayings. "Geen meter" should realy be "voor geen meter" (you never hear "geen meter without "voor")

Nice. Most of the expressions are used so common I hardly realize that they are expressions.

Spuit elf geeft modder (hose eleven gives mud).
Your aan de hand eplanation missed out on something.. what is er aan de hand in fact means: what's wrong. Nice post for foreingners, well done, Best regards from a dutchman. Leo.

En die 16? Als puntje bij paaltje komt? Nou? Precies goed! 😜😁😁
And.." iemand bij de hand nemen." Is guiding somebody (mostly)figuratively . And "bijdehand" zijn. Means te be cheecky. Also a person can be a "bijdehandje". A smartass. And if you dont trust somebody you can indeed. Don't trust him for a meter.. 😂 or "hem voor geen cent vertrouwen" .. (Same thing.)
One mistake. "De puntjes op de i zetten" should be last in your summary. 😉
Ik ga met de kippen op stok... I am going early to sleep. And if some one wakes up early there is a rather unpleasant expression: He.. Heb je in je bed gepiest? If you are hesitating for a difficult task: Met lood in de schoenen iets doen. And if some one is telling something unbelievable: Zeg... Maak dat de kat wijs! Eating something unpleasant: Met lange tanden iets eten.

Do you know that the many of dutch saying come from the 1500-1600's and are related to sailing and life on the boats.
The difference between a proverb and an saying is that proverbs or idioms always have a verb ;-) So sayings doesn't contain any verb.
My favorite: "Zo stoned als een garnaal"... Translated: "As stoned as a shrimp"
"Joost mag het weten".
Maak je borst maar nat most likely connects directly to our history...getting a wet chest would've been synonym for getting into deep water. So high water, or problems can be expected ahead...

In have a new one you might not know, a variance to het slaat nergens op/ it makes no sense. It hits like a plier on a pig. But the origin of this saying is fun to look up, it doesn’t originate of hitting but more in the sense that the two items do not combine, you cannot fit a plier on pig. It doesn’t make sense to do that.
