The habits that changed my life (and how I built them)

In this video, I talk about the systems of habits I built into my life broken down into the categories of career, learning, and life. Building habits is hard and it's taken me years and years but they are so worth it. As James Clear says: "You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems."
Enjoy: The habits that changed my life (and how I built them)

About me
Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

Awesome Tina! Love the explanation of the procrastination loop: feeling sad for not being productive but procrastinating to take your mind off the sadness just to feel sad again and then start the cycle again. Automic Habit is an amazing book, supplementing it with another wonderful book "Compound Effect" and anyone can develop the habits of success in life. Digging the little jokes and side drama in the video, so cool :)

1:45 I REALLY needed to hear that😿 I’ve made a lot of progress this year but every other week I find myself going back to my old ways. Choose 1 habit to start! This sounds so silly but to build my own confidence the first habit I did was brush my teeth using my right hand instead of my left hand (I’m left handed). I just needed a small win to give me a bit confidence to start

  • @farhanahmed4460

@@TinaHuang1 Jim Kwik actually recommends to try brush your teeth with your opposite hand as it stimulates the brain. 90-95% of the thoughts we have are the same ones we had the day yesterday and the day before, so our brains can’t change if we do the same thing over and over again.

Well to summarise , the building of "the system of habits" is what I call as "the common sense which everyone has but most of the people forget about it" . It might seem monotonous at first but then as you go on, it does give you a relaxation and the confidence that your life is indeed under your control which is more than enough to carry on the journey forward. So yeah build a system of habits and bind yourself to walk the path of freedom 🐢🐢🐢

Awesome! I bought the one thing book right after you talked about it in this video! 😂 I have a bunch of habits I've been building. 1. Like drinking 100oz of water a day. 2. Going to sleep at 11pm & wake up at 7am. 3. Doing Meditation. Especially when under fear or stress. 4. Listening to Audiobooks for extra learning while in the shower and while I sleep. 5. Avoiding all drugs including alcohol. 6. Eating healthier food. 7. Learning Japanese for 2-3 hours a day.

This whole video is what I preach everyday to myself. The one thing that most people fail at is understanding oneself i.e. 'Who are you". Without that everything else is mute. This style of thinking has helped me tremendously from decline medical school (Physical Therapy) to trying to do cyber security/data analytics (kind of like your situation). daily habits are key. Every day, two-three hours (does not have to be limited time) and then leave it alone. Do that everyday and it adds up. This has helped learn coding and the current languages I am learning. For those who need reassurance. It works. Just focus on the practice of establishing daily habits!

Regarding "get a job to get a job", this fits very nicely with a lot of the recommendations I see when it comes to learning e.g. programming: theory helps but only so far; start a project that matters to you and this will be the stepping stone to more learning. Learning for learning without practice doesn't help. Great video!

When you started the job with the professor how much coding did you know at that point? How do you find opportunities like this?

That's the funny thing - we're likely meant to have multiple careers throughout our work lives vs. staying in one field or at one firm for our entire professional life. The workplace and companies don't make that feasible anymore unless you somehow get lucky or are just apathetic about work and just never want to move.

It is amazing. I have an opposite problem, quickly done things and forget. So when a professor asked - did you start working on the project I gave you two months ago? Which project? You need to recall and start :) Oh, this one? I already finished. What?
