Yes! I love days where I am intentionally doing nothing. The worst is when I'm meant to be productive but I'm not and I'm stuck watching Netflix or KZread shorts. The faster I notice this behaviour and correct it, the better I feel for the rest of the day.

The first advice that comes to my mind is to sit with the discomfort. A lot of the times procrastination is a cycle of feeling anxiety about doing what you "have to do", procrastinating to soothe the anxiety, then feeling anxious for procrastinating... If you simply learn to feel this anxiety without judging or trying to fix it, you already go a long way to get out of the loop.

Once I discovered that my procrastination was just fear of the process n the results of a task, my whole life changed. Now I don't think about doing things anymore. I set a list of things I have to do once a week, n simply forget about it. I try to live in the moment and if at that moment I wrote that I should be doing x, I will simply just start doing x. Jump into it as blind as I can without analyzing if I should or not or thinking about the later stages of it... just do it. And give my all. Try to finish it early by working smart and diligently. Then, once my tasks list is empty for the time being, I rest. It boils down to avoid as much as I can feeling anxious about doing things. Learn how to just DO IT.

  • @JoaoJGabriel

@@Catherine_Ea oh yeah, I totally get that. The counterintuitive thing about feelings and sensations, though, is that they can only ever go away if you stop actively tensing up to avoid them, let them be and follow their natural path in and out.

I also try to schedule morning meetings whenever I can so I have a hard morning start time. Or I have been going out to study recently, it also helps alot. I teamed up with another friend this week to check in with each other at 9 AM to get the work day started, that has been so helpful! Body doubling with a friend on Facetime also is great. Love the practical and realistic tips, Tina! The suggestion to get out of one's room or comfort place to disrupt an unplanned degeneration day is a great idea. My degeneration days include laying in bed and binge-watching KZread. 🤔 Ways I've been trying to prevent sabotage days are timeblocking my days beforehand to include breaks, rest, chores/errands, and fun and refraining from using my phone in bed so that I can sleep more (the toughest one for me!). To disrupt an unplanned degeneration day, I like to take a shower and/or do some quick yoga, write or review a brief Must-Do list, and... forgive myself! I find that I tend to be more productive when I'm gentler and more sympathetic with myself. 👍 We all have our degeneration days, but you're so right that it's about balance and catching ourselves when we're running on autopilot rather than with intention!

I did this yesterday because I was feeling so down and bummed out. Couldn’t go outside because it was pouring rain, but I started on something around 2pm and then felt better to do a few more things for the rest of the day, which probably wouldn’t have happened at all if I hadn’t at least done one thing.

Starting a momentum is key here. I can feel what you explain; I can spend a whole weekend watching YT videos one after another while scrolling my FB feed. At the end of the Sunday, when I finally get up, put a podcast on and start cooking for the week I can spend 3-4 hours in the kitchen cooking and baking. As you say, inertia. A tip for the people that are like me, always needing a mental stimulation to do the boring tasks (cleaning, washing up, cooking, folding laundry...) : put some energetic music or a good podcast on! It really helps me going and I don't need to look at a screen so I'm actually doing my chores on time.

Love the idea of just going outside. I often don’t feel like working out at 7am but I’ll take a walk at 7am. And I tend to study more at libraries than at home. My vices are KZread videos (or anything with endless scroll) and junk foods at the same time. I end up deleting social media apps every couple days because nothing really works to stop using them excessively other than just uninstalling them (yes I’ve tried the app limiting features on iOS). They’re too good at their goal of engaging users, tbh. I sometimes watch while on the treadmill so I feel better about the time I spent on that and it motivates me to keep getting on, lol. On the idea of working in public places, you can also try airport terminals and the parks/benches of random apartment complexes. I used to have a hobby of loitering as a teen and I was able to hang out with my friends in surprisingly corporate or semi-public spaces that you wouldn’t always think of. Also try university/community college libraries in your area, not just the city libraries. I have an annual museum membership (that costs the same as 2 museum tickets), and I can technically go any day for free and read/chillax/study in a corner in there.

Weirdly enough, my favourite procrastination is watching tutorials/demos/workshops. I know all i need to start, its just that addictive thought of "but if i watch 1 more video before i start, or rewatch that demo, i will be even more prepared to do it", but then at some point i realize i just watched 2 huge tutorials and been sitting there thinking "deyum thats a lot of knowledge right there! It's just too easy to give in sometimes to just doing only what you have to when you have big goals and you know there's so much more time you could spend doing what you want to. That can apply to non work or work related learning things too. How often do we just burn out because we get in a cycle of just doing what we have to and put the things we really want to do to the side? That's where doing the dishes and cleaning always comes in as a saving grace.. cause I mean, technically you should always do that but they're so easy to convince yourself you don't have to and then they build up.. how can you ever get back to the things you really want to if you let the basics of life and healthy comfortable homelife build up cause of what you "have" to do, if that makes sense.

My cousin who is a bad ass at building her personal success said once to me, if there's something you can do, you should just do it. Usually it's just something small like the few dishes that could be put off in the sink, writing a friend you know will cheer them up and cheer you up too when they get back to you, or blasting music and cleaning the more monthly type chores in the home and it can snap you out of the funk of just giving up thinking why bother doing more than I have to. Almost every time I make those choices everything I get inspired about I want to do for myself and my own mental health and growth jumps back into the foreground super charged inspired again :)

On top of that, it works for me to do anything that takes less than five minutes - anything that caught your eye. dishwashing, small cleaning. the main thing is not to think "meh, this is easy, I'll do it later", but to think "this is so easy that I can do it immediately" ps: The video is sponsored by Brilliant, but based on the percentage of video space occupied by Lays

The most important thing is to get your s***t together. If you establish a realistic objective it would be easier to stay motivated and achieve that goal.

Hi Tina, I live in a country and city where it’s generally unsafe to go out alone as a female. any suggestions/alternatives to getting out of the house?

I think the obvious things would be to go out to your garden or courtyard if you have one, or prearrange an outing with a family member. I know it isn't easy but they're the obvious things that come to mind. Of course Tina's advice overlooks one thing... So the point isn't to be outside in some exotic place, rather it's to be away from your bedroom/study space. This allows your brain to make a mental/pattern shift from "this is the place I don't do work" (bedroom) > "this is the place I work" (*not* your bedroom). The fortunate thing is that even if you can't leave your house, there are other techniques to "trick" the brain and cause this mental shift. One way is to get dressed in clothes you associate with studying/working (instead of studying in your pyjamas) or create a pre-ritual. There's a good book called Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey that goes into the pre-rituals of creative types. For example, Beethoven would count 60 coffee beans each day before his coffee, then start working lol. See how you go and if you can find other ways to make this mental shift.

Hi, I know this is late but I am in a similar position where I don't have such places that I can sit for free. What I do is I shift my position in bed. I forced myself for a few weeks to only work/study on one corner of my bed. So now if I feel lazy, I go and sit in that corner and my brain automatically tells me it's time to work/study. The thing you should keep in mind is don't use this special place for anything else and also make it easy to access.

I remind myself that if my car had a flat tire I would fix that tire - not slash the other three. Wasting the rest of the day is slashing the other three tires. Get up, take a shower, do the dishes, go for a walk - do something to get your body moving.
