How & When We Wean Lambs (ON OUR INDOOR SHEEP FARM): Vlog 178

How & When We Wean Lambs (ON OUR INDOOR SHEEP FARM)
My September born lambs are already 2 months old, meaning mom is getting short-fused and lambs are eating more feed and water than mama’s milk.
IT’S WEANING DAY!
This video goes through the entire process (including full sound - sorry.) from tearing down creep areas, to sorting ewes from lambs, to loading lambs into the trailer and introducing them to the finishing barn across the road.
I also caught some footage today (Sunday… 3 days later) to show just how much they’ve quieted down and adjusted nicely.
#sheep #lambs #weaningday
Weaning day isn’t my favourite job on the sheep farm…
What is that ONE job you wish someone else would do for you?

I’ve been watching your channel for a long time now. Not everything relates to my operation…except we both own much of the same equipment…we are about to put skin on our fourth full sheep barn and I am headed into lambing. We are a family farm and our children grew up many years ago and are raising children of their own so we are just two of us doing everything. Sheep, chickens, bees and this year we are starting a commercial meat rabbit operation. Because our indoor space is limited (barely 800 sq. m. Indoor barn) we have to be really condensed and efficient with every chore and movement. I went out to frost seed this year and suffered serious hypothermia by misjudging how I would hold up to 10 hours of 3C degrees in high winds. My wife got home and checked the fields and I’m grateful she did! As you get older everything gets heavier and faster except your own carcass! Laughed like crazy at “Real life of sheep farmer here!” Thanks for that!

Keeping that pack really makes a difference on how warm they are. Just some straw over top of the cement pad is cold and city people, animal activists don't get that. As long as the pack is dry and draining if necessary (with calves), it is such warmer as it begins to compost, it gets even warmer. It's just hell to clean out come spring if you have to do it with a dun fork and wheel barrow!

Just a thought but rather than hot water you can put some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and spray it on frozen trailer parts. It melts the ice and evaporates off right away so no worries about slippery surfaces. We use it on our horse trailer and to de-ice our vehicle windows.

Not telling you what to do.....this is just a suggestion (question)but ever think about using an electric heat gun? blow it on the frozen parts and the moister will evaporate. You putting water on it to free them up will just make a slippery mess just like you said and freeze as soon as you drive again. also what is good what we use is a Teflon type of spray grease that does not let as much moister in and is good for the cold. Not as many freeze-ups. Love your channel. always have a smile on my face after watching. (rob)

I was curious if you ever get help from your hubby or extra help from the kids? You always seem to be first one to help with the farming and stuff and it seems some things would be such a big help if he took 30 minutes to help move the babies with the truck. When we wean our cattle we have to keep them in a pen near by because if they go out on pasture they’ll end up jumping fences to get to there babies so it’s really loud for a while
