How to write a Personal Statement for Physiotherapy | My Top 3 Tips

In this video i talk about how to write a Personal Statement for Physiotherapy and I'll also be sharing my Top 3 tips.
Let me know what you thought and if it was useful !!
Applying for the course as a masters student (Link to physiopedia page): bit.ly/2P1e6P2
1) Number one thing academics look for in personal statements is a person who has got or talked about some sort of clinical experience. This does not have to be shadowing a physiotherapist, it could be any clinical setting. As long as you have showed that you have some idea of what working as a health professional would mean. And also because academics want to know that you’re not just coming onto the course expecting it to be about sport which a lot of people do!
Try to get some work experience on a ward as a volunteer as this is the most relevant to the placements that you will be undertaking on the course.
2) Make sure to research the qualities of a good physiotherapist ( you can search these up online but a few are) i.e
a. Empathy
b. Physical fitness
c. Excellent communication skills
d. Great team working skills
e. Ability to be organised
Try to find examples in your life where you have demonstrated these qualities and link it to how it may make you a good candidate to become a physiotherapist i.e in what part of a Physiotherapists’ role will they need to show empathy?
When will they need to have good communication? When will they need to show or have the ability to cooperate in a team effectively?
Try to link your work experience and say what it has taught you about the skills of a physiotherapist and then give an example from your own personal experiences .. in your school work, or other hobbies or interests like a sport you take part in etc.
3) Mention some key reading material that has inspired you, try to read one or two relevant journals by key people in the profession. I will give you an example here which will show you are miles ahead of the game.
a. Jill Cooke - one of the front runners for research on tendinopathies and musculoskeletal medicine.
b. A couple of relevant reading texts such as brukner and khan’s Clinical Sports Medicine or Nicola Petty Neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy assessment and treatment techniques
c. Mention any Journal and they will be impressed because it shows you are already thinking like a university student by seeking evidence based information to support your practice (which is really also the backbone of physiotherapy as a profession, it is an evidence based profession, you use evidence and research to support your clinical reasoning skills in clinical practice, you will eventually anyway)

    Hi, I'm currently studying Access for Health Professions and expect Distinctions (at least, aiming!). Our college library database has access to some journals but not British Journal of Sports Medicine, are there any other authors than Jill Cook that you could recommend? I am hoping for interview dates soon, and would love to back my personal statement up with relevant articles. I have managed to find articles and some research published however by authors at my university of choice, do you think its wise to mention so?

    Hi Gary, thanks for your comment. That's amazing you're looking at journals. To be honest any science journal is fine. Another notable person within the physio world is Lisa Harvey - for management of spinal cord injuries. Have a read of her stuff. Could include her in there as well. As long as the research is within the last 10yrs its still relevant I'd say. In regards to mentioning the authors of the unis in your statement - i probably wouldnt as you'll be applying to more than one uni. But defo have a read of them and when you hopefully go for the interviews at those particular unis you can mention you've read those pieces of research by that lecturer and it stood out for whatever particular reason. *You don't have to do any of these things btw, they're just extra to get you to stand out :) Hope that help mate

    Hi Alice, it depends on the context you’re using it for. Hard to say without reading your statement. If you’ve shown your awareness around the scope of physio in other parts of your statement and want to throw in your experience as a group exercise instructor as a way to support an attribute of yours that may work… perhaps also in the paragraph about your personal hobbies and interests

    Hey Lily, you can try and use online sources of info like physiopedia or physioplus to do some reading/ courses. You can also put this down on your statement. A lot of unis are empathetic to your situation as it’s affected many other people too. Hopefully this helps. I’ve made a video on this today, check it out if you get time. Thanks 😊

    Hi, I haven't got any work experience in physiotherapy. However, I shadowed a dentist over the summer. Can I talk about my clinical experience / patient care I observed at the dentist and apply it back to my physio PS? Thanks

  • @masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689

    @masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes you can, as they’re both clinical however I’m not sure if you want to apply for dentistry or physio and how your personal statement would be….. usually if you’re applying for physio they want it to be specific to physio and relate it to physio attribites and not dentistry.. hope I’m making sense. Basically your personal statement can’t be general as if you’re applying for other medical professions… that’s just my opinion. Might be worth chatting to an admissions tutor at the unis you want to go to for full clarification. This is because it shows your commitment. Not saying this is the case with yourself but just to be aware 👍🏼

    Hi Iman, doesn’t have to be a specific journal, include any journal that has interested you. There are hundreds. Just showing you’re reading journals pre university is a massive indicator of how keen you are and that you’re already prepping yourself for doing the course.

  • @masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689

    @masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689

    That’s ok , you can make that work by describing the skills and attributes you observed the physio have. But another option is.. if you already have a good understanding of what physios do.. just make it up. I don’t believe anyone checks where you did your work experience. As long as you’re comfortable speaking about it and verbalising then you should be fine :) Does that help?

    They are quite different from each other so your personal statement has to be specific. You have to make up your mind which one you want to do. Physiotherapy is probably more valuable in the long run. You will have a broader array of opportunities available post graduation. That’s my opinion, you are free to do as you wish
