How to Use Your Own Router with AT&T FIOS Fiber Internet | Model 5268AC FXN

Ғылым және технология

AT&T doesn't currently allow you to use your own router exclusively, but they do allow your own router behind theirs with few restrictions (and that's the main point). The cable modem router wifi combo I have is the PACE 5268AC FXN. Important (2020)! New interface now calls it IP PassThrough for some units. That's the same as the DMZ-Plus mode here.

    A lot of people have commented about how the AT&T interface has changed drastically. Turns out that they have just been sending a different modem to you all, the BGW210-700. So I signed up again and got that modem sent out, here is the walkthrough: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gY6umKdxiM7FeNY.html This was the link for you to share your situation with me, but I think I've got both of the modems figured out for 2019 and 2020. modemhelp.paperform.co I will use the submitted information to make a help document, guide, video etc to help you and others. I only had two submissions. I'm back in LA now, and I figured out that the 'new' stuff being sent out is the *Motorola BGW210-700l* , which is of course a completely different interface. I'm signing back up with AT&T, and will do a walk-through for the 'new' equipment. Subscribers will get notified first, and I'll be sure to tick the notification on when the video is released. I expect the equipment to get here by this weekend.

    Are you using a BGW210-700? What firmware do you have? I tried this a year ago on older firmware but was not able to make any changes to the modem even though I had the password to get into settings. So, instead I bypassed the AT&T modem using the VLAN + MAC clone method (found by Google search) so that I don't have to the use their device at all. Basically I boot their modem to authenticate 802.1x, then shut it off, then boot up my own router that has the MAC cloned. I find this small inconvenience the best way to eliminate their device and avoid double NAT.

So its not simple, you have to do routing and switching magic to get the BGW210 behind your router/firewall, but leave it exposed for the security handshake. You need something more like a Ubiquiti Edgerouter, or a pfsense router. Google for "Pfsense BGW210 bypass" if you want detailed instructions.

Just make sure you have a computer nearby to get into the console with ethernet, or disable wifi on the AT&T unit only after you have everything set up. But I'm not sure why your orbi isn't emitting any signal. I'd reset both systems and start over. (Note I don't really go into the Orbi setup in this video since I think that's a well covered topic).

    Hi Mike, I found this video after watching your review on the Recast which was full of excellent information and I now feel confident about buying one, thanks!! I'm getting ready to switch from Comcast which I have had for 35 years to Verizon FIOS. Been wanting to switch for years at every price increase but they recently dropped my favorite TV channel which was the last straw, so I'm bingeing information trying to get up to speed on this technology. I know electronics very well but I'm still in the ice age with entertainment stuff. For instance, my main TV is still a CRT model which just won't die LOL. So anyway, a simple question. Verizon in my area allows users to buy their own router and I'm even finding lists of acceptable routers on the net. What is the big difference with the AT&T system and how are they blocking the signal if you want to get rid of their router and rental fees? Verizon FIOS has an ONT installed (their equipment) which converts fiber to coax or Ethernet cable which connects directly into the router. In my case with buying internet only I will just have the Ethernet cable going to my purchased router. Thanks!

    Hey, thanks for the comment. I'm happy my videos are getting watched. Well good news is with Verizon and your described setup you are good to go. That is the ideal setup with ethernet going to your router . No need for all this other stuff I had to do with AT&T. In fact, I don't think you have many limits with the router you pick. (If you care to share their approved list, I'd be happy to comment on it). The reason why AT&T forces you to use their stuff is mostly so that they can sell you their other services (phone, and TV) and to control your usage through the box, troubleshoot issues etc. Congrats!

    @@MikeMu Many thanks for the quick reply. To be more clear, I was wondering if you know what AT&T is doing inside of their routers to keep people from using their own. I suppose Verizon could change their policy and do the same thing at some point. The router list for Verizon. I have visited 100's of sites in the past few days and probably couldn't find it again. I remember is was a 2019 review of the top 10 routers but I didn't pay much attention to it because my plan will include free router rental and price hold for 2 years. After 2 years I will be looking at routers again or maybe even switch back to Comcast (internet only) or another service. I also watched your video about "tips to lower your bill" which I should have been doing years ago :-)

    @MikeMu

    @@nicholasceea4109 Oh, well to be more clear the unit I had in my case was a router/modem/AP combination. Most places simply do a MAC ID address whitelist and assignment. Each networking device has a unique one, and then they have a super-admin access into it. Besides that each box phones home with its status periodically, and it allows them to send out resets, settings etc. The problem is because they want to be able to troubleshoot (keep costs down), they lock you into their modem. Plus also charge you a fee to 'rent' said modem. And again its just about whitelisting and assigning the MAC ID address to their system and your account. So it's more important to separate the modem from the router in my case because I want a better performing router, and wireless AP than what was built-in to the triple combo. Direct ethernet in your case is the best case scenario and one that I paid extra to do when I had Verizon FIOS. Then that became Frontier and things went downhill a bit... Oh yes, always negotiate a month in advance to when your 'promo' deal is going to expire. They'll keep the same rate for you at the very least in most areas.

    I'm disabling the firewall of the AT&T unit. You need to be connected to the AT&T router to configure what I was doing. Do all of that before you connect your Eero. Also make sure your AT&T unit is the same one featured in this video, if not check out my newer video.

    Hey Mike, I just got an Orbi too so hopefully my questions will fit as the same setup as yours! You have a note about going to "port 4 to wan". My Orbi has just 2 ethernet ports, one called "internet", one called "ethernet", I assume "wan" is the "internet" port on my Orbi? 2) My ATT has 4 ethernet ports and a data cable, can I still use all 4 ports for my devices since the Orbi only has one "ethernet" port, or do I need to buy a device that will allow me to add 5 or more ethernet jacks into the Orbi? In other words, once I do the setup, will the ATT's ethernet ports no longer be "usable". Thanks for helping out Mike

  • @MikeMu

    @MikeMu

    Right. And no, you shouldn’t use those other ports. It’s a problem with the ATT unit and the way pass-through works. Solution is to get an Ethernet switch to expand your ports. Don’t forget to turn off WiFi on the ATT unit too.

    I have watched your video five times and it is great except that I have looked everywhere through my screens both going thru the app and accessing the IP address directly and cannot find a place to disable the firewall, turn off the WiFi, or see the device status DMZ device, etc. My fiber was just installed a couple weeks ago and I set up the ORBI RBR50 but think I am having conflicts as they are running as separate LAN’s (I think). I have an ARRIS BGW210-700. I have a SSID, password, and guest password set up for the AT&T router and a SSID, password, and guest password set up for the Orbi RBR50. I haven’t changed any settings or turned off the WiFi to the ARRIS because I can’t find where to do it. It seems that we should be logging into the RBR50 network with the SSID and password but when I do that, I have trouble. Any help in understanding this would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks man.

  • @MikeMu

    @MikeMu

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Manuel. My case was to use as little of the router from AT&T as possible for the most speed and control. If your only issue is with streaming and through wireless, what you could do is just choose to setup your Netgear Nighthawk in AP only mode, and then you just plug into one of the lan ports of the AT&T. I'm afraid I don't have one of my nighthawks in front of me to see which port, but I think if you choose AP mode the WAN port should be fine (on the Netgear) - check the manual. You can then just disable the WIFI on the AT&T unit, (or keep it but make sure the frequency doesn't overlap with the frequencies you want to use in your home). Note in this scenario, you aren't using the routing capabilities of your Nighthawk, just the tech around the WIFI and AP portions. Just means you're paying for stuff you aren't using but if the end result is satisfactory then does it matter much? Only you can decide. Go my route if you want to use your Nighthawk features beyond the AP (access point).

    Amy, call up AT&T and tell them you have to reset your pace gateway often. They will likely replace/upgrade you to the newer BGW series gateway/router because that's the main issue with it. robbie adams it’s a little bit more difficult than just that. Turn off the WiFi, disable packet filtering, and do a IP Passthrough on the gateways firewall. Find the MAC address for your router and put it in manually or find it from the device list. You also have to disable the firewall settings (if your 3rd party router has firewall settings though). If you are a gamer, like I am, you also have to create an IP Passthrough for all of your connected gaming consoles. I hope this helps!!!

Below are the steps I used and I provided the link as well. 1. Log into the AT&T home manager/AT&T IP Address 2. Click the Firewall tab, then click the IP Passthrough sub tab (You may be required to enter your Device Access Code. This can be found on the back of your AT&T modem). 3. In the "Allocation Mode" section, select "Passthrough" in the dropdown box. 4. In the "Passthrough Fixed MAC Address" section, select your router from the "Device List" dropdown. (Note, you will need to have your router connected to your modem via ethernet in order to be able to select your router from the list). 5. Click Save 6. Restart your modem when you are finished and you should be able to connect to your router. forums.att.com/conversations/att-internet-equipment/strict-nat-bridge-mode-what-is-ip-passthrough-can-i-enable-on-my-arris-bgw210-or-like-router/5defbfffbad5f2f606ad5ed2?source=ESSZ0SSPR00facsEM&wtExtndSource=20190210182827_AT&T%20Fiber%20Equipment_Wireline_LITHIUM_2127251541#M29310

    I use it the same way we talk about making Xerox copies even though most of us don't use Xerox machines anymore. FIOS stands for Fiber Optic Service. I went from Verizon FIOS to Frontier FIOS now to AT&T FIBER which is what this video is about.

    Sounds like you didn't get it. Try AT&T Support. Good luck!

    These guys one here are making videos to fool the normal person. You don’t need to change your IP to anything. All you have to do is change WiFi channel and separate WiFi channels. If adding a separate WiFi router then disable WiFi on the RG. I’m tech and I’m finding these (tech) videos hilarious. Add a good mesh network to cover a home and leave it alone. These net gear routers that cost hundreds of dollars will do nothing. I have been doing this for over 11 years. The biggest problem with AT%T WiFi is ban steering. Separate the WiFi channels and you will be set without buying a separate router. Unless you have a large home then I suggest a mesh network.

    You didn't watch the video, and its not made for people who consider themselves 'techies.' What you add here is going to be confusing for most people. Why don't you just make a video? I had a 10,000+ plus square foot property and wanted to have control and setup an Orbi Mesh network to cover it while achieving very close to the maximum throughput possible. According to the AT&T tech, he hasn't seen speed that high achieved yet after doing the speedtest as a final test before leaving.

    @@i81b4i8u Comcast / Xfinity is / was much worse than AT&T. Sadly that's what I'm stuck with here for the duration of the 'quarantine'.

    @mike mu I just tried your way of using another router and it didn't go quite as planned... The only thing I didn't do was change the ip address like you said... I'm going to try that later....

    @@MikeMu Good video. I will use it to help a friend set up his Nest WiFi with AT&T U-Verse service. At least Comcast allows you to bring your own modem and free yourselves from the monthly "equipment fees".

    Step 1: get rid of at&t Step 2 : buy your own modem and router and go with a different ISP
