AT&T Fiber Internet Service Tech Came Out | The Fix for My Slower than Gig Fiber

Ғылым және технология

This is a followup video for my 2020 How to Use Your Own Router with AT&T addressing the slow issue, what the service tech did, and some tips on how to contact service. Hard reset of the cable modem was the key.
AT&T doesn't currently allow you to use your own router exclusively, but they do allow your own router behind theirs with few restrictions (and that's the main point). The cable modem router wifi combo I demonstrate is with the Arris/Motorola BGW210-700 that AT&T sent me in July 2020, configuring to use with my pre-existing Netgear Orbi set ( jo.my/orbi ).

    I was getting 170 mbps on my 1 Gig internet with the wifi 6 Alien, on my iPhone 12 pro max! It doesn't matter what router, I get the same speeds, the routers all get over 800 mbps up and down from the modem, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I know wifi is slower than hard wire, but I should be at a least 300 mbps! Any ideas?

    So when you did the hard reset, don't you lose all the passthrough settings you explained in previous video? Do you have your ATT modem/router as DCHP Fixed MAC set to orbi parent?

  • @MikeMu

    @MikeMu

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you do lose all the settings from my previous video. But you just have to put them all back in. This is why I suggest making sure you test this all out before moving forward with the IP Passthrough. Once you know where and why to do it, you can make the changes total in 10-15 minutes including boot up time (with my setup anyway). It was worth it to get the speed up to 900+ Mbps speed. No, not DHCP fixed. Its based on MAC address anyhow. As long as you follow from that previous video you can get everything back up set for IP Passthrough. Make sure you unplug your Netgear first before doing the reset. Actually unplug everything else off the LAN ports of the modem.

    Thanks for the informative video. I just switched to ATT 1gb from Charter here in Atlanta. Initial wifi speeds right next to router were about 700 max but ranged 300-700. The tech said I would notice an increase after a few days but I haven't noticed any increases. I tried the hard reset for 20 sec. but no real changes. Do I need to call tech and have them do something before the reset ? On a side note, my sales rep. told me I had a "locked" plan at $70 ( $20 discount ). I asked if my plan would go up after my first year and he said no. I called customer service and they said my promo discounted ended after one year and I could call and ask if there's a new promo. They said they were sorry for the misinformation from the sales guy. Buyers Beware !

    Richard, if you contact them they will do the speedtest from their AT&T site to see what speed is hitting the AT&T unit directly. If its within range of what they expect, they probably aren't going to do much for you. If you're checking wifi, they're not going to consider those speeds to get close to what you get wired because a lot of factors are involved between the hardware, yours, and other interference. Your best bet would be to keep a log of different speed tests over a period of time and then comparing with what they expect you to be getting. As far as the plan being 'locked' in, I'd only trust it if it was from higher up in the chain, and then in writing. Sales guys will say anything, and spew out false information to get the sale.

    Sean, I was reading in some ATT forums and this one guy was comparing ATT 1 gig speed to spectrum's 1 gig speed in NC. Basically what it came down to is he was saying that ATT is not living up to their guarantee of 1 gig speed. Spectrum will deliver the 1 gig speed it's just you're going to have to pay a little bit more. He thinks it was worth it to pay more because Spectrum does deliver the 1 gig speed compared to ATT not delivering. Just an FYI

    @@jeffchambers2498 Kinda replying to both of you guys and just my 2 cents, I've had ATT in the past a long time ago, and they always were the most unreliable network I've ever had. Constant network drops, numbers on speed tests that are all over the place, you name it. I swapped to xfinity and that was what I used for 4+ years. They were super reliable, barely had any interruptions, but I was paying a decent premium for speeds of about 150. ATT recently brought the same Fiber deal in my area for the 50 a month and it was something I couldn't pass up. The speeds do fluctuate a lot, and on WiFi from the BGW210 itself, I sometimes have problems loading stuff from certain pages. To sum it up, if you have another Fiber provider in your area, definitely steer clear from ATT.

    Im understanding the more wires you have that go through your walls to an outlet to the living room per se, the more speed you will lose. If the optic is connected to the modem/router combo in your closet and rerouted through the Cat5 module allowing you to access the port connection from the Cat5 in the living room, I found the laptop speed not to increase above 100mbps. But in the closet directly to the mod/rout combo, its anywhere from 300-900 on several tests. Youre saying my N router wouldn't maybe boost that loss if connected through the living room port, even slightly? I'll be playing around with a bunch of combinations to get the most speed. I hard reset once already. And it didn't make a difference. Although I didn't unplug either. Cat6 ethernet cables won't help either right? Thanks for any help.

  • @MikeMu

    @MikeMu

    Your speed limitation is through the weakest link in the system. Best speed from location to location is going to be ethernet cables, to whatever you device supports. Second best is typically getting within decent AP (Access Point coverage) and Wifi that your devices support. With that in mind, if what I understand is that you ran a cable to your laptop and you top out at 100Mbps, your ethernet is probably only capable of that. So you will not get any higher speeds until you upgrade the cable (presuming your laptop has a gigabit ethernet port), or your laptop, or any other hub/switch you might have in between. ie, I've found some people using old network hubs inbetween to extend the signal, and they're only capable of 100Mbps. Anything that goes through that is going to be constricted to 100 Mbps. If your cable is the weakest link, 802.11n, or AC plugged into that port isn't going to be any faster. New cable could help, so if you're willing to upgrade check that out.

    it depends on how long, not sure what the rating is for cables but cat6a is rated for longer distances than the ladder. it really depends on the time of day, some homes can’t get a true fiber line so they get a hybrid fiber line that is connected to a fiberoptic node.

  • @FFrobvandam

    I need some tech advice. So I just got today ATT Optic Fiber. When my siblings and myself do a speedtest on the mobile devices web browser it gets at least 670mbps. Now, I'm on my desktop is running the wifi from the modem, it only gets 50mbps and same on my PS4. Also, when I had my ethernet cable connect from the modem to the computer. I tried to get speed test and it was giving me connectivity error on a few specific websites by saying dns error, not recognizing IP and it wouldn't load the website, but going youtube and signing onto outlook was fine. What exactly do I need to get guaranteed speed? Do I have other wireless devices? Yes; Satttlelite using the main box to serve to 4 other boxes. Two apple TVs, tablets and everyone at home uses wifi on their phones, alarm systems. So what could it be?

  • @MikeMu

    @MikeMu

    Sorry, I thought I replied to this. Not sure why it didn't get posted - maybe I was traveling. It sounds like your other devices aren't up to speed because of their wifi connection quality and service from the ATT unit. And then also a DNS issue thrown in to muck it all up. First, I presume you followed the advice in this video? Your mobile phones may be newer than the other devices you are connecting with. Their wifi is better. See if you disconnect your slow devices, forget wifi, reset them up on 5Ghz and move closer to your unit makes a difference. If it does, that answers part of your issue. Change your DNS to cloudflare or google dns or OpenDNS. That may resolve some of your other connection issues. Theirs is going to be more stable than what AT&T assigns you. And yes, its possible the main unit can't handle as many devices as other routers, but what you listed isn't that many.

    That's close to the most you can expect out of your S8 and hardware already. You might spend a lot more for a little bit more improvement, but I doubt you'd notice a difference. The issue I have is some of my sites I use can't use up all the speed I have from Gigbit fiber anyway, so those of us who are lucky enough to get the speeds have to wait for the rest of the world to catch up.

    I have followed all of your videos trying to get gig speed while using a secondary router because I was sick and tired of the BGW210 And it’s outdated control panel and very low strength antennas. After my father got AT&T fiber installed a few weeks ago, they set him up with the newest model BGW 320. I convinced AT&T to send out a tech to come and swap out my router for this newer router. There is a noticeable increase in Wi-Fi speeds especially on devices with Wi-Fi six. It is definitely a more advanced and more current router compared to the BGW210. Just be careful, if you ask AT&T to replace your router you will need to demand a service tech to come to your home. AT&T is ordering system will automatically order a replacement router that matches your existing router no matter what the customer support tells you, they said multiple times that they would send me the newer BGW320, yet I received multiple BGW210 in the mail. You have to have a tech come and replace the existing ONT and router. I hope that is useful, if I were you I would do anything and everything I could to get AT&T to upgrade you to the more advanced router for the same fee that you were already paying per month.

Comcast although they don't offer symmetrical speeds at least is good about what they say I got the gig right now from them which is 1000/35mbps and I actually get 1200 on the download and 41mbps on the upload when running a Okla speed test hardwired into their XB7. If I am paying for something I want to get close to something or better. Hopefully, one I switch to FIOS in my new home I actually get the full download and upload speed that they promise as I want to avoid the annoying data cap. I also want to make sure to not have packet loss and have lower latency for gaming. I have never had a real issue with my current internet but I want to pay less money for better service or at the very least get a new promo when I do come back

    @@dealinator9 Yes of course. 5G is different from wifi 5G though. One thing I mention in other video(s) is that you should re-confirm the settings are set. Disable the AT&T wifi. Reboot everything so that the systems start up with the settings configured (it doesn't always automatically do this).

    SOLUTION TO ALL YOUR ATT ISSUES This video proves absolutely nothing but that this man has incorrectly troubleshooted his network. The fact your upload is in the +900 is a good sign that your network is in good health. The proper way of troubleshooting your network is this: 1. Download AT&T App: Smart Home Manager. ATT technicians use this app for a good baseline of what to expect before arriving at the cx/customer home. In this app you want to use the speedtest feature which tests the Modems portion of the Gateways bandwidth from the PFP (Att midpoint relay box). (THIS TEST IS NOT A ROUTER TO CUSTOMER OWNED DEVICES LIKE Speedtest.net or Fast.com etc). Your test should show +900mbps dn/up. If its not CALL ATT FOR AN ACCOUNT REPROVISION (as the ont firmware may be corrupt). If your test shows +900mbps dn/up then move on to step two because ATT will no longer accept responsibility for your "slow browsing". (Support links in the description) 2. Check that your ethernet device can ACTUALLY get 1g on its network card in the CHANGE ADAPTER SETTINGS option, right click on your ethernet adapter icon, select STATUS. This should tell you what your network speed is from the router (you will not get a higher speed than what is shown here). Also, you can check in the device manager to make double sure your card can get 1gig. If you've passed this system check then move on to step three. (Support links in the description) 3. Before doing any test on your device PLEASE MAKE SURE you put your computer in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING! I can't tell you how many complaints I've received because someone's computer is regulating bandwidth and blaming the ISP company. Just a little education in layman's terms, your anti virus software, your background processes (Apps), WINDOWS 10 firmware, or external switches or routers CAN AFFECT YOUR OVERALL SPEEDS!! Safe mode with networking option pretty much eliminates anything that can regulate your bandwidth ESPECIALLY WINDOWS 10. Once your computer is in the proper safe mode and you've removed ALL ETHERNET devices EXCEPT your computer, then you are ready to speedtest the ROUTER portion of the Gateway USING your own device. (Support Links in the description). 4. TEST using either Javascript based SPEEDTEST.NET (Ookla) or HTML5 based FAST.COM (Netflix). With SPEEDTEST.NET make sure your server is one closest to your location or even try testing with several servers for best results. Automatically finding servers DOES NOT ALWAYS work best. If your tests have improved then the ISP is not your issue. Your computer and its components such as apps, hardware, software, firmware etc. are the issues. 5. If you have multiple devices of the same connection type (wired/wireless) to test PLEASE DO, as this can save you money from a ISP trip charge. At&t techs can use a JDSU giga meter to test your gig speed when on site, so requests they do so to verify device bandwidth speed aside from your personal equipment. Their JDSU's use the Speedtest.net app built into their meter under the ETHERNET, then settings tab. I WILL LINK EVERY SUPPORT LINK I'VE USED IN THE PAST TO HELP TROUBLESHOOT NETWORKING ISSUES WITH ISP (MOST EXPERIENCE WITH ATT FIBER/COPPER) Personally I use dslreports.com for all my speed and ping tests. superuser.com/questions/727854/how-to-tell-if-nic-supports-gigabit-ethernet#:~:text=Go%20to%20Device%20Manager%2C%20and,list%2C%20the%20card%20supports%20gigabit. answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-10-1903-update-capped-my-internet-speed/b034b04b-564b-492f-be27-7f1ee1f01b6a support.avira.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002870214-How-do-I-start-Windows-10-in-Safe-Mode- www.quora.com/How-do-you-manually-switch-to-5GHz-WiFi-on-Windows-10

So either AT&T will fix the problem or lose me as a customer to another wireless provider. Their fiber internet was advertised as lightning fast yet I still get buffering issues when I try streaming a movie in HD. So far fiber is not impressive.
