How to Use Your Own Router with AT&T Fiber Internet | 2020 Update with BGW210-700
Ғылым және технология
AT&T doesn't currently allow you to use your own router exclusively, but they do allow your own router behind theirs with few restrictions (and that's the main point). The cable modem router wifi combo I demonstrate is with the Arris/Motorola BGW210-700 that AT&T sent me in July 2020, configuring to use with my pre-existing Netgear Orbi set ( jo.my/orbi ).

Thanks! Luckily, this still applies to the newer models from AT&T since the interface has not changed. Appreciate the comment.
Thank you! Your video was very well explained and showed everything in detailed. I was able to reconfigure the settings between our Orbi Wifi 6 and ATT Fiber. Now, everything works like it should.
Thank you so much! I've had AT&t fiber for about 4 months now and I was forced to buy their crappy extenders because I couldn't get my orbi to work with it. You showed me that all I had to do was two resets back to back on their horrible gateway to get my system to work with thiers. My orbi is running great now and my wifi speeds are no longer in the 30mbps max with their equipment.
Mike, Very good walkthrough. I have a brand new BGW320 from ATT, and successfully have it routing as an umbrella above my ASUS RT-AC88U 8 port Gigabit Wifi router. I couldn't get it to work until I switched the subnet on the BGW320 to x.x.0.x since the ASUS was set up on the x.x.1.x subnet. Appreciate you taking the time to put this together - saved me a lot of time and headaches! Cheers!
Thank you so much! You have done a brilliant job explaining this, for those of us who are not knowledgeable in ip networks. I have read more than a dozen posts on this topic. Your video is easy to understand and follow. Can't thank you enough.
this worked wonders I'm so happy now I finally have an open nat type so if you get at&t fiber definitely use your own router you are completely limited by at&t on their gateway
Add me to the list of success stories. Thank you so much for getting my system back up and running with my original router!
Thank you so much! After scouring numerous message boards that led me down a rabbit hole and never worked, I had my Orbi and AT&T units playing nicely in 5 minutes! Bless you for posting this!
Another satisfied viewer. These instructions also worked for the newer AT&T Fiber modem, the BGW320. Thank you!
That's good stuff. Good to know if I ever want to jump on the wifi 6 bandwagon and upgrade my wireless in the house. I currently have the BGW 210-700 with 2 mesh wifi extenders. Plugged directly into the extender upstairs, I get 400 MB up and down. So not bad for stock. I can already see the spousal unit rolling her eyes while I explain my "need" to upgrade :)
Just set up my BGW210-700 connected to Orbi RBR860 with two satellites. Works great! Thanks for putting this video together Mike.
Man, thank you for this! I set this up for a friend and I basically just followed your instructions. Bam! Works!
I like people who have access to fiber in there area and they are shooting up to like 500, and here I am coping with being stuck with 40-50, awesome video worked fine with my netgear router i bought.
Hi Mike! Thank you so much for this very helpful video. I recently switched from Xfinity to AT&T and had an existing Orbi RBK853 system set up with Xfinity. Right away, when I switched and plugged in my AT&T Modem/Router combo into my Orbi--I knew something was off. This video was extremely helpful in finding a comparable 'bridge mode' option on AT&T's router. The only additional item that I did was, even though none were checked, I disabled all of the packet filtering and also decided to use Google DNS on my Orbi's settings. Things are much smoother now. Thank you so much.

Thank you very much for posting this! Followed along in real time step by step. Just switched from a cable internet provider to AT&T Fiber -- much cheaper and much faster and love the service. I saw a large improvement after setting up the passthrough -- ping went from 10ms to 6ms and upload went from 600 to 800Mbps. Thank you for this straight forward video. There is one error in your explination though; if you have a router connected to the AT&T gateway via a hard wire you do not need to connect your computer directly to the gateway to gain access to it after you turn the wifi off at the gateway. You only need to type the IP address of the gateway into your web browser and it will load up just fine. In essence your computer is indirectly connected over wifi to the gateway through said cable. Again thank you very much for such a helpful video! I too am enjoying a much faster internet connection.

These directions are tremendously helpful, and got me to a partial success. I didn't have to change the IP address because the new router, TP-Link Archer AX 6600, used a different one than the AT&T modem. Then I followed the rest of the directions. My own laptop and cell phone are connected and whizzing with triple the speed from before. Thank you. But I can't connect any other family devices (phones or laptops). The router won't accept my password, which I've verified repeatedly (and used successfully, above). I got one device to connect via WPS (a tablet), but not another (a cell phone). So then I went into my router's own software ("Tether") and updated the firmware. Now neither that tablet nor the cell phone will connect via WPS or password. I can be taught, but I don't know what to do at this point. Before I pack up the router and send it back, can anyone please rescue me with some ideas?

Hi Mike - Thank you for publishing the series of videos about using your own router with the AT&T BGW210. I do have a question... What is the recommended configuration when you want to hang two routers off the BGW210? I have a NetGear Orbi router that runs my personal mesh network AND my employer provides a Cisco ISR 1100 router for my work systems. I would like to hang both the NetGear router and Cisco router off the BGW210 but that means I cannot use the passthrough function, correct?
@MikeMu

Hi Brian, you can use the pass-through function only on one device. But, for business use AT&T may be able to unlock more flexibilty, but ask you to pay more. It wouldn't be residential service anymore, but business class. Or you may ask to get a completely separate AT&T line / service to use with your Cisco/work stuff, and hopefully also paid for by work. (You'd ask for at least 2 dedicated IPs).

For those concerned about leaving the AT&T wireless still on while running a router like the Orbi. One suggestion is to turn off the 2.4Ghz radio on the AT&T router but leave the 5Ghz radio on with a different SSID. There is no channel overlap on the 5Ghz spectrum so you can safely leave it on without issue. But, you do just have to connect to the AT&T wireless network with a 5Ghz capable device. But, it does keep you from having to connect wired. locally to the ATT router to manage it.

Thanks so much for these tutorials! You’re so clear and concise. I have ATT fiber 1gb to the house with the BGW210-700 and I hooked up an Archer AX11000 wifi6 to bypass for better speeds, etc. because I was buffering when streaming and dropping on service. I was wavering between the Archer and a mesh wifi6 and thought I’d try the Archer since I have it. The modem/router and router are on the top floor and the buffering etc was happening on both the top and lower floor. After hooking up the new router, I’m getting much better speeds when I’m using the 5gh, mid 400’s up and down on average, but the 2.4 is really slower than when I only had the BGW. Hence, when I tried to direct the ATT modem to the MAC address of my router, it does not match. So disabling the MAC Cloning Option and fixed it for me
Don’t know if you’re still answering questions on this video but the fastest AT&T internet I can get in my area is the 75mbps plan, I have the stock bgw210 modem/router they give you, I bought a net gear xr1000 and wanna get it to work upstairs by running an Ethernet to it from the modem downstairs, probably should’ve found this out before buying but will the xr1000 work with my plan? This is great! I just installed opnsense on a mini pc to use as router on other side of bgw21--100. About to give this a shot. One question: Is there any particular WAN setting I need to make on opnsense router? Or, just plug opnsense WAN port to BGW LAN port?

I haven't had a chance to try this video (still waiting on AT&T for equipment) but had a few questions. I have the RBR750 system from Orbi, is there anything different that I should watch out for when completing these steps laid out? Also, after completing all these steps, did you run into any issues where resets occurred due to outages or system updates and if so, did you just have to complete the whole setup? Please let me know since this will be my first time with AT&T and they are my only option at my new location. Don't want an expensive mesh system to go to waste.

Only thing is: Disable the Wifi on AT&T when you're done. Reboot all systems after you save all the settings one last time. The systems are supposed to do this by itself, but doesn't always. After that should be good to go. Many people with experience know this already, but it wasn't necessarily clear to everyone.
Thank you for this video, it helped me a lot. While everything is working and running smoothly, I do noticed my speeds both upload and download are slow. Even when being next to my router....i'm getting only about 150/20 , before using the at&t as router I would get like speeds in the 600s. Anything you would recommend me to do? I didn't turn off the firewalls on the At&T, could this be making the speeds slow? I'm using a TP-Link router Thank you in advance

I did a follow up video on this. Check it out. I’m out biking right now, but just search my channel for At&T.
thank you
Hey Mike, thanks for the video. In the netgear app, internet says OFFLINE but I am able to connect to my new router via laptop and phone. I am not able to connect through roku, TV, etc. It sounds like something is off in my wiring between the AT&T and the router. Can you upload a picture of your wiring so I can see what you did there? Thanks Mike!

Hi Blake. From the ATT equipment it’s LAN port to WAN (on Netgear).
Got this installed and working, so thanks for the video! My only question is you disabled the security features on the AT&T modem because Orbi comes with "Armor." However, this is just a 30 day trial. So, did you change back the security to default settings?

I paid for armor. Which also includes protection software for computers. Was worth it.

@@MikeMu AT&T provides Active Armor for free though? Or am I confusing 2 x different things
Mike, you video is very good - I have watched it several times, each time getting more information and more comfortable with performing the changes to Passthrough Mode. One question - When Passthrough Mode is selected at the Allocation Mode box other videos recommend entering the MAC address of the router, in your case you choose to "choose from list" and that brought up a MAC address without manual entering one. In my case I manually entered the MAC from my router. Help me understand - what is the difference? The MAC address you "selected from list"???? Where did that MAC come from??? I am concerned that my MAC address may not be the correct one. Please reply if you get this notification of my comment. Thanks.

The one from the list is what the router sees as connected. One should match exactly with the one you entered (assuming no other modifications were made).
I got AT&T in September this year and I was given a fiber optic modem. Instead of connecting to the ONT it connects directly to the modem. This modem has wifi AX or wifi 6. I'm seeing speeds from that as high as your Orbi was getting. Noticed my Buffalo ac1900 isn't getting nearly as fast downloads but Upstream is similar. Would all the IP addresses be the same to try using IP pass-through? I know it's limiting the download on that router because I got faster downloads with my 300 mb down cable connection compared to the 1 gig down fiber connection. I'm using both wirelessly at same time and they're not interfering.
Thank you! My speeds where being limited to 80 up 100 down. Currently using a Netgear nighthawk and now getting 500 down 600 up.
Thanks for the video! Question, can I setup a firewall hardware switch in front of my Motorola BGW210-700? I wanted to setup a new router and add a firewall switch. But since AT&T doesn’t have a separate modem, I’m a little lost on where to connect my firewall switch. Or where to place my own router.

Afraid not. No. You can do it after the BGW210-700.
Wondering why do you need to set the IP Passthru, etc. In the past, I've connected a router (from a gateway - both a Xfinity cable gateway & a Verizon DSL gateway) to another router (LAN to LAN port) to create a wired AP. Both routers on different subnets and both have their respective DHCP servers on. Everything works. So is there something about the Uverse gateway that necessitates this? I'm going to follow your vid (great vid!) but wondering why. Thank you.

Hey Vincent, yes everything would work just fine the way you have it till your needs change. You would know when that happens. Ie if you want to run certain services or connections In and out of your network. Typically it’d be services you want but can’t connect with. Many need it for gaming services for example, also to reduce latency.
I’m getting my service installed on Saturday and was worried it wouldn’t work (or be a lot of work to have it work) with my eero system. I think this will work so thank you very much.

It should. Oh, also you don't have to change the IP address. There doesn't appear to be a conflict with what Eero chooses by default.

@@MikeMu thank you. I’ll let you know if it works when I get everything installed.
Thanks, this worked for me! Though when I attempted to set up an additional google wifi point, the original wifi point/router is not finding it. Any thoughts? I wonder if settings need to be changed somewhere.

That’s a google issue. I had that problem from time to time. But my issue may have been different firmwares and different generations of google WiFi meshing together.

Mike or James - what are the Device IPv4 address for the google wifi router? is it different then the Orbi? What is the start and end address for the google router as well?

It’s different, and unfortunately I’m out of town. But you can configure it to whatever you want after you get in the configuration page. Google assistance may be able to tell you.
How does this work with the Wireless Stbs from At&t Uverse. I currently have a WAP connected to my At&t Router that send the coverage out to them. Would i continue to do the same or connect the WAP to the Orbi?
I am having a lot of trouble with speed in my ASUS xt8 using your instructions. Is it a hardware issue?
HUGE THANKS! Very helpful!
Question: I have purchased my own router, and I currently have it hooked up to the att Motorola modem/router AT&T provided. But I am not sure if I should have all my LAN cables plugged into the router or modem? And also do you recommend me going into the settings and setting up the ip pass through? I just plugged in my router without messing with the settings on the Motorola modem

Just follow the video. 1 Lan from Motorola to your router WAN port. Everything else to your own router. Disable AT&T wifi. Then IP Passthrough. If you play Xbox/PS5 multiplayer, additional steps may be necessary.
Thanks! No double nat this time! Hope it lasts

A month later and still running fine!! This is the way!
I picked up a Nighthawk RAX 50. I tried the pass through mode. On the 1G modem, I am getting 430 mbps download (went up) and my upload dropped to 194 mbps. My android box pulls like 700 mbps from the same 1G switch that the RAX 50 and android box is connected to. I feel like there is room for improvement.
Alternative approach: Instead of configuring the modem-router into virtual bridge mode, you can easily configure Orbi from router to access point mode. This turns off Orbi's DHCP server and avoids "double -NAT" issues while delivering the same Wi-Fi performance with less configuration work.

Yes. But ATT’s router becomes the bottleneck for some of us.
