How to use the Clutch on a Cordless Drill

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

THANKS FOR WATCHING!
PLEASE RATE, COMMENT AND SUBSRIBE!!!
This is a how to video on using the clutch on a cordless drill. In the video I am using a DeWALT 20V MAX 1/2" Hammer Drill (DCD985) The purpose of adjusting the torque on the drill is to make sure that you don't overdrive the screw into the material that your using. Also when fastening a screw into metal, if to much torque is used it is very likely that the screw will snap. Most newer drills will have a torque selector with settings ranging from 1-22. Generally, settings 1-5 are usually for short screws going into wood 1/4" or less. 6-15 are good for larger screws into wood and when drilling into stone and metal a mid to higher torque setting will work best.

Thanks. My wife bought a drill and she thinks I know how to use it simply because I'm a man. I can use simple tools like hammers, saws, wrenches, and screwdrivers, but I have little experience with a drill. Your tutorial is a great benefit to me.

Possibly, the best video on KZread on how to use a cordless drill. Excellent walk through of 1) the 3 mode settings and 2) when to adjust the clutch so as not to damage the wood on delicate furniture. Thanks a ton.

That's the exact drill I got my husband, I had no idea it had a hammer drill option right on it. Thanks to this video, now I know how to use the clutch. I read an article first but was still clueless, so it was great to see your simple demonstration. I'm semi- famous for burying screws too far into the wood, so my new knowledge might make for a welcome change. :)

Haha yeah, even some guys who use drills every day have no idea what these settings are for. But with the advent of impact drivers and battery-powered screwdrivers, most pros don't use the drill for driving screws into wood anymore. If you get a good drill with a hammer function like the one in the video, you can drive special screws into masonry, but other than that it's generally used these days just for boring smaller-sized holes in wood, steel, aluminum, tile, and concrete. But for heavy driving of screws into wood or sheet metal, best to use an impact driver.

Now theres hammer drills...and screwdrivers w numbers and settings and torques and clutches . I A great gift but Im like what the heck are these numbers? So no need for countersink bits w this. I forgot about 'See Jane drill' shes a good instructor too!! thank you

Hey , great video... Is there a way of using my Dewalt DCD778 as a torque wrench for basic car work. I know it won’t be as accurate as a torque wrench but wanted to save the $100-150. Mine has clutch’s settings of 1-15. What would that equal in ft/inch pounds. Or is this not even possible. Can’t be the only guy to think this lol

  • @chimera91977

If you really wanted to figure out how many ft. Lbs a drill driver puts out, you could attach the chuck of the drill to the end of a socket that is on a dial type torque wrench and read what the dial registers when the clutch is slipping at each level

I just bought a new drill. I've owned and used drills before, but never bothered to learn how to use the torque settings. The drill comes with two safety guides, but no USER guide! They offer absolutely no help, as to how you USE the drill? Whether the charger cut's out automatically when the battery is full? Torque settings or what they are for? These booklets are CRAP! Whats wrong with you manufactures!? Anyway, Thank You very much for your help, and posting this video fella :)

good info. what still drives me effing insane is a low torque setting saves my screw head from stripping, but it doesn't drive the screw all the way in. i turn the torque up a couple notches to finish the drive, bam i strip the fcking head. guessing shitty screws, shitty bits or just a shitty operator. or any combination of them. arggg
