How to use the Clutch on a Cordless Drill

THANKS FOR WATCHING!

This is a how to video on using the clutch on a cordless drill. In the video I am using a DeWALT 20V MAX 1/2" Hammer Drill (DCD985) The purpose of adjusting the torque on the drill is to make sure that you don't overdrive the screw into the material that your using. Also when fastening a screw into metal, if to much torque is used it is very likely that the screw will snap. Most newer drills will have a torque selector with settings ranging from 1-22. Generally, settings 1-5 are usually for short screws going into wood 1/4" or less. 6-15 are good for larger screws into wood and when drilling into stone and metal a mid to higher torque setting will work best.

Thanks. My wife bought a drill and she thinks I know how to use it simply because I'm a man. I can use simple tools like hammers, saws, wrenches, and screwdrivers, but I have little experience with a drill. Your tutorial is a great benefit to me.

It is ok to tell her "babe, no idea what I'm doing here" lol. Ijs.
After 5 days of researching to revive my weird obsolete ryobi combi drill, only now does this video pop up. PERFECT for figuring out the features of the combi drill where basically everything these days say "drill or impact driver" etc. Now i have things figured out. Thank you
Possibly, the best video on KZread on how to use a cordless drill. Excellent walk through of 1) the 3 mode settings and 2) when to adjust the clutch so as not to damage the wood on delicate furniture. Thanks a ton.
Perfect Video - described exactly what I was needing to know. Thanks
This was exactly what I was looking for the clutch mechanism without being too specific to a specific brand or model . Also had a great demo! nice job!
Thanks! This is exactly what I wanted. I appreciate the planned sequence and the clear, coherent narrative.
Very succinct. Covered all the relevant points without a whole bunch of extra waffle. This was exactly what I needed!
Hi, thanks for the video, a very simple and clear demonstration of how to use torque settings, saved me a load of hassle.
This really helped me with my new drill, I had no idea how to use the clutch and now I feel very confident, thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Thank you for giving straight to the point info without all the b.s. and also props for not adding cheesy music like so many others haha.
Building a deck, broke out and dusted off the old cordless drill. Thanks for the refresher course on the torque settings. Great video.
That's the exact drill I got my husband, I had no idea it had a hammer drill option right on it. Thanks to this video, now I know how to use the clutch. I read an article first but was still clueless, so it was great to see your simple demonstration. I'm semi- famous for burying screws too far into the wood, so my new knowledge might make for a welcome change. :)
Short clear to the point, exactly what I was looking for after digging in youtube, thx for the video!!
Thanks for this terrific video. It's short and to the point, with examples. Perfect!
This video clearly explained everything I was trying to find out. Thanks!
Thanks for putting this together. Very helpful.
i do hvac and plumbing and asked all the techs what the settings are and how to use them, you answered my question thank you

Haha yeah, even some guys who use drills every day have no idea what these settings are for. But with the advent of impact drivers and battery-powered screwdrivers, most pros don't use the drill for driving screws into wood anymore. If you get a good drill with a hammer function like the one in the video, you can drive special screws into masonry, but other than that it's generally used these days just for boring smaller-sized holes in wood, steel, aluminum, tile, and concrete. But for heavy driving of screws into wood or sheet metal, best to use an impact driver.
This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
Just what I needed. Thank you!
Thanks for this. So well explained and shown.
Great video! It was difficult finding a video that explained the torque settings easily.

Thanks. I'd only built canvas frames in the wood shop at college for an art class I was taking before this. Drills there were cheaper and had no clutch. Now I bought a drill and mom wants a bird house fixed and I have to put up a rose trellis, etc.
Brilliant!

excellent dude...I was listening to some other boring fuck drone on and on and he never got to the point of what I wanted to know,,,and you did! thank you so much
Thanks
thanks!
Thanks... Now I wont break my new screw drill :D
So when do you actually use the high speed and low speed modes ( acessible via the slide switch and labeled 1 and 2 on most drills). What purpose do they serve?
I feel like such a banana head for not knowing this. Thank you so much.
bill said it i myself am guilty of not setting my clutch thanx for the post
Hello, i want to ask if your drill at speed 1 and clutch 1, if you press the trigger all the way down fast, it will stop? bcs mine stops. This happends to me only no clutch 1 and 2.
HEy man Red DOT u sound like Joe Nameth.. i already burnt my motor on my Ryobi 18 volt drill when mixing mortar for floor tiles.i was thinking i should use a heavier drill or something else. what can u suggest?
Dear Mr Prepper, What is your experience of carbon brush life on these things, and when would anticipate changing them? I have the DCD925,the older style of your drill...had it since early 2010. Im only DIY "weekend warrior" you might say,but its had a fair bit of use now, still going strong though. Will it last many more years at this rate before new brushes are needed? many thanks, great vid.
Good vid! They all skipped the explanation about the torque and clutch. I always just had a reg. drill I did a million thing and slow to fast depending on the trigger squeeze. Now theres hammer drills...and screwdrivers w numbers and settings and torques and clutches . I A great gift but Im like what the heck are these numbers? So no need for countersink bits w this. I forgot about 'See Jane drill' shes a good instructor too!! thank you
Are the numbers in lb/ft of N/m ? or is it different for different drills?
what setting would i use to drill into vinyl siding
I love you
Thanks for the video, so how do you know which is the correct setting?

Red Gemini Arts, start with a lower setting, stop and increase and repeat until it is flush
I have a drill but doesnt have a screw mode, but it does has clutch settings .... 13 to be exact
This was great. He mentioned that the torque is automatically maxed when in drill mode. Can anybody tell me if this also applies to hammer drill mode? I'm assuming it does but I'd like to be sure. Thanks in advance

1 to 22 what unit?
I thought my drill was worn and was about to buy a new one. I have the clutch setting all wrong. Thanks.
What's the slide-switch on top of the drill? What does it adjust?

+kellerrobert80 the speed of the drill. Thanks for watching!
Hey , great video... Is there a way of using my Dewalt DCD778 as a torque wrench for basic car work. I know it won’t be as accurate as a torque wrench but wanted to save the $100-150. Mine has clutch’s settings of 1-15. What would that equal in ft/inch pounds. Or is this not even possible. Can’t be the only guy to think this lol

Yeah.... it doesn't work that way. By the torque wrench, you'd be surprised at how often you'll use it.

If you really wanted to figure out how many ft. Lbs a drill driver puts out, you could attach the chuck of the drill to the end of a socket that is on a dial type torque wrench and read what the dial registers when the clutch is slipping at each level
My clutch won’t move. What do I do?
What he said⬇️👌🏽
I just bought a new drill. I've owned and used drills before, but never bothered to learn how to use the torque settings. The drill comes with two safety guides, but no USER guide! They offer absolutely no help, as to how you USE the drill? Whether the charger cut's out automatically when the battery is full? Torque settings or what they are for? These booklets are CRAP! Whats wrong with you manufactures!? Anyway, Thank You very much for your help, and posting this video fella :)
You can learn more about it on woodprix website I think.
good info. what still drives me effing insane is a low torque setting saves my screw head from stripping, but it doesn't drive the screw all the way in. i turn the torque up a couple notches to finish the drive, bam i strip the fcking head. guessing shitty screws, shitty bits or just a shitty operator. or any combination of them. arggg
thank you. very helpful!
good video thank you
Thanks
