How To: Use a Torque Clutch On A Cordless Drill - DIY - Learning!

Most have a torque clutch on their drills but most home owners probably don't really know what its for or use it. Its a very useful option to have. What it does is limit the torque of the drill - and you may say, 'why would I want to purposely limit power?'. Example is if you're putting up drywall, you don't want to push the head of the screw right through the drywall with your powerful drill / driver. What you can do is set the clutch to low or medium low - you'll have to test it a few times, and see which setting drills the screw just enough to dimple it into the drywall but not break through the drywall. Its an incredibly useful feature when used correctly. Can be used for putting on decking as well . You could feather the trigger to do the same but if you're doing many screws, you want to he effect to be the same for all and the clutch was added to do just that and dumb down the driving for you! Great feature, I use it every time I get the chance!

Always wondered why pro builders are always making these woodpecker noises lol, thanks for this great explanation. Don't think many DIY'ers understand clutch/torque!

This was very helpful. Several years ago I bought a set of two drills, but the one with the numbers on the clutch I've never used because I didn't know what they were for. Thanks!

Very helpful. FYI-Stanley Tools makes Black & Decker Tools. I always thought the icon that you said looks like a drill bit is actually a screw and that that is where you want to set the clutch if you're using it to screw a screw into something.

+malachi1616 haha, ya... i probably shouldn't be doing that but... i was never one to do things the 'right' way :) if I make a mistake big enough I learn from it. I did check the depth of it all before I started drilling though, I really don't want to ruin my old table :)
