How to use the Blend If Layer Style in Photoshop

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There have been numerous occasions that I have gone into Photoshop, double clicked on a layer to adjust the Layer Styles and have seen the "Blend if" dialogue. I always thought, "Blend if what?".
I also cannot tell you how many times I attempted to use this adjustment and been dumbfounded by its results. More often than not I would say, "well that didn't do anything" or "when would I ever use this".
Recently, I forced myself to learn it and ran through several hundred scenarios to begin to understand it. It wasn't until I made a mock up color wheel and a black layer that I truly began to understand it.
To make it easier to understand, instead of "Blend if", replace that with Protect... "Protect the underlying layer" and so on.
In this tutorial I will show you how to fully understand the Blend If dialogue as well as show you a real world scenario where it becomes invaluable. When Color Grading a photograph, the Blend If option is truly a life saver!

Thank you for being actually good at talking so that it's possible to LISTEN to you. I found other tutorials for this but most people were speaking really fast or had crappy mics and following them along was such a nightmare...

I've been using blend if more often lately. Although I still don't fully understand the concept of it. I've been using the always reliable "move the sliders until it looks good" approach. Thanks Blake. You always do such a good job of explaining things. I'm going to watch this again and see if it sinks in.

Thanks, Joe. For the longest time I did the same thing until someone asked me to do a tutorial on the "Blend If" options. I was thinking "doh". I kind of knew it, but ad no clue all at the same time. I am really glad this makes more sense now. I really appreciate the feedback!

Thanks for the instructive post. So far I've steered away from the scary world of "Blend if" but maybe now I'll try to tackle the monster. What's the worst that can happen - Delete Layer, no big deal

I've been using a 50% gray layer to non-destructively dodge and burn, but I never got around to figuring out Blend If, even though, as you point out, we see it all the time. This really opened my eyes, and even though I still don't have 100% understanding, I can use it until it sinks in. Your instruction was terrific. Very clear. Thanks.
