Question: What do you think about the brand Klean Strip liquud sandpaper no mess....? Because it doesn't smell like the one you are describing. It looks more like a soapy water rather than a strong thinner like solvent. Is it worth it? I used it once for a medicine cabinet that I painted. I did it indoors and I never felt any harsh fumes. Please let me know your opinion. Thanks in advance.

Hi there! Thanks so much for the video 😊 I'm still learning... so I watched a few videos where they say to not paint over the gloss... they say after you finish glossing, to clean it afterwards before applying primer or passing... I think with a damp towel... so I was curious what you thought and if you have any insight... btw I'd be painting my kitchen cabinets... thanks so much!!

I’ve used deglosser many times and it works great. I don’t like the smell though. You don’t clean after using the deglosser. The deglosser will soften the finish so if you clean the cupboards afterwards you will move the finish around it won’t be smooth. You would definitely have to sand then. Also if you’re working on kitchen cabinets work in small sections because you have to paint with in one hour. There’s a detailed post on this video on my blog www.peonylanedesigns.com/how-to-use-liquid-sandpaper-paint-deglosser/

I'm preparing some panel doors for painting. Right now they have the stain and sealant finish that was applied when the house was built (about 35 years ago). Maybe the instructions are different for furniture but yours is the first video that doesn't say to work in the deglosser, then wipe it up, then follow up with a damp cloth and after the piece has dried apply the primer and paint. Are your instructions specific to furniture? Thanks.

They’re probably using a product like an M1 deglosser which needs to be rinsed. There are no rinse deglossers available. Look for one that says wipe on wipe off or no rinse on the label. It’s the same for furniture and cabinets.

No they’re not the same. Paint remover will take the existing finish off. Make sure you follow the directions on that container carefully if you choose to use it. It will be messy. Make sure you do not use it in an enclosed space. Be safe because some paint remover is very toxic.

Does this work for getting off a layer of water-based paint that's peeling off the underlying oil-based paint? (That's my theory for why it's peeling, at least) I want to get that top layer completely removed before repainting since it clearly didn't bond very well to the surface.

OK so... I'm attempting to do my cabinets. Primer won't stick to it as is. So Im opting to try liquid sandpaper cause.... I'm not sanding all this, there's no way. Your video says to let the deglosser dry then prime Overtop.. but everything else online says to remove it after 30 minutes or so. Does it ultimately depend on what liquid sandpaper you get...? Are some "wipe off before priming" and others are "let dry then prime"..? Super confusing.

  • @JunkinwithStacy

Some might be different from this one. I have to seen one that says to remove it but I follow the directions if that’s what it says to do. But then why wouldn’t you just use paint stripper if you’re using one you have to wipe away? That sounds really strange to me. Did you try a high adhesive primer? There primer like Kilz Adheshion that work even on laminate. I did a laminate desk for my daughter and it’s still holding up to her abuse.

OK thanks! Yeah I'm having a heck of a time here. I've now tried 2 different deglossers. EZ Strip works... but it's unbelievably messy and ill be going through a ton of it. Scraping it off causes chunks of residue to roll up in sticky pieces. Wiping with a wet cloth takes a lot of effort and after testing a drawer... there's no way I'm doing every cabinet this way. Krud Kutter gloss off doesn't work at all. It cleans great but in no way is it taking any gloss off. Not a huge fan of having to use liquid sandpaper like you're showing due to the chemical smell... I ended up getting the Behr Bonding Primer... and even this primer doesn't stick to slightly glossy surfaces which it says it's supposed to. I'm back to just sanding everything by hand which I was specifically hoping not to do and hoping the paints going to hold up. Upsetting actually. I think I am going to have to get the one you're using here.

Thanks for remarking about safety. I've seen countless times, in my case men not following any safety protocols. They breath, touch or hear anything out there like it is for a weak person to wear safety mask, gloves or ear plugs. Well, then they are all deft, yelling when talking or you have to yell at them, or worse, they don't understand why suddenly a cough comes, the voice is harsh and health is all ruined.

These chemicals are no joke. The liquid sandpaper is one I typically save for outside because it’s so harsh. Windows open and fans blowing out is the next best thing. I admit that I forget to remind people my glasses are safety glasses so I don’t always wear separate goggles. I try to remember now. We get one life, one body.
