This week we look at the difference in sanded mechanical bonds vs deglossers. One side of the panel has 1 coat of the Axalata vinyl sealer then two coats of the Axalta 550 solvent based conversion varnish. The other side of the panel has is a factory UV coated plywood. The panels were sanded with the surfprep 3X4 sander at 120-220 and then a deglosser was used in accordance with the manufactures recommendation. I then applied 1 coat of the Axalta VCU 1000 tinted vinyl sealer and let it cure for 7 days before doing the cross hatch adhesion test. Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!!!

Thank you for this video. I have been marinating over the choice of mechanically sanding or using a deglosser. The lazy part of me was really hoping for better results when you tested deglosser. 50 yrs old and my arthritis in the finger joints doesn't like sanding. Oh well.

Thanks for this. Im moving into a new house soon and currently doing some research on painting cabinets. I knew sanding was going to be required..but then I saw several people use deglosser. I figured I might try it to save a bunch of time, but I was pretty skeptical. I work as an automotive painter, so I know the adhesion power of a mechanical bond. After seeing this Im just going to save myself the future grief and put in the extra time to sand em down. Great video.

Yes a mechanical bond is the best. I was surprised that the deglosser did do as well as it did but it’s not as good as a mechanical scratch.

Love your videos!!! Still learning and updating after being in the painting business for 20 years of 30 years of painting.. I’m taking your challenge to try one of these 4, “Renner. milesi sirca, envirolak cic, sirca or milesi universal.” Which one is the best for refinishing? . Also, my main question to you is this… I always use 180 for sanding down the gloss, but I also use a deglosser after I sand for 2 reason; (1)to help with deglossing the corners and inside trim of the cabinet I may missed, and (2) it helps with getting the dust off, fellow by tack clothe.. 0 dust. . Or would it be better to degloss 1st then sand ? or just sand.. I always wonder if I was doing it the best way.. Thanks for your time on your videos.

Would you reccomend deglosser before sanding? Or just sanding? Some of the old cabinet sets I do are so dirty I'm afraid to sand before cleaning them. Thanks Eric.

Eric, I have been a painter for 25 years. Getting more and more requests for painting cabinets. It's something I've always done but from more of a painters method and not the method of a professional refinisher. I have airless and hvlp but looking to move up to a fine finish machine like the apollo. So stoked I found your channel. Your knowledge and also the knowledge of the guests you have on is priceless. Elite Fine Finish, and also Dennis have been great as well. I've been doing my homework and its paying off. After years of trial and error and learning how to fix my mistakes I'm finally coming around and feeling confident doing large kitchen sets. You guys rock !! Thanks for all the advice !!!

CLEAN FIRST, then sand - otherwise all your doing is grinding that dirt into the substrate.

doc hall dawn dish soap can causes issue with some coatings but yes in some cases the top coats will adhere better than the primers. It all depends on the primer and the condition of the cabinets.

the foam pads do nothing to a factory lacquer finish or whatever its coated with. but the normal paper does an amazing job at stripping down a coating. I had to use the higher grits so i didnt mess up the profiles or used some other pad or 3m scratch pads by hand.

Rick Bailey yes it depends on what you are trying to achieve but I agree. Some folks use the coarse or medium which is suppose to be a 80 scratch on the coarse and a 180 on the medium but I agree that it’s not as aggressive as regular sand paper.

How? Putting acetone on substrate doesn’t change the adhesion. It’s all about getting a mechanical bond. Deglosser just dull the sheen with chemicals which improves the bonding but it will never be as good as a mechanical scratch it’s just science.

@@ericreason6559 it's not boring if you do this as a profession or as a serious hobbyist. This saves time, money and allivates the need to try for yourself at the expense of not actually getting work done and thus paid. Once you've completed the job and received payment it's a total bummer to have a failure in the field or after a short time. Customers put their faith and trust in us as professionals and it's disappointing to have a call back for an issue. I appreciate the time and effort Eric takes to put out this content. Even if I feel I've got experience and confidence in my product and processes it's good to be reassured by his testing.
