Steps for How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets Without Stripping:
1. Make a sketch of the kitchen cabinets, then identify each door and drawer with a number.
2. Place a small strip of masking tape onto each door and drawer, then mark the strips with the corresponding number shown on the sketch.
3. Use a cordless drill to unscrew all the doors from the cabinets.
4. Unscrew and remove the door hinges.
5. Remove all the drawers from the cabinets.
6. Use a putty knife to scrape any rubber bumpers from the back side of the doors.
7. Unpeel the tape from one of the doors and then scrub its surface with a scouring pad dampened with deglosser. (If any doors or face frames have a coating of greasy, oily residue, wash them clean with hot, soapy water prior to deglossing.)
8. Wipe down the door with a cotton rag soaked in clean water.[BR]
9. Dry the door with a clean, dry cotton rag, then flip the door over.
10. Repeat the previous two steps to degloss the back surface of the door.
11. Cover appliances and counters with plastic-lined canvas drop cloths.
12. Use the scouring pad and deglosser to scrub the surfaces of the face frames on the upper and lower cabinets.
13. Wash the face frames clean with a water-soaked rag, then wipe the frames dry.
14. Wait one hour before proceeding.
15. Remove all the drawer faces, then degloss and wash each one.
16. Protect the wall around the cabinets and all other adjacent surfaces with masking tape.
17. Use a 2-inch-wide synthetic-bristle paintbrush to apply the first bond coat to all the cabinet doors, drawers, and face frames.
18. Allow the first bond coat to dry for 2 hours.
19. Flip over the doors and apply a bond coat to their back surfaces. Wait another two hours.
20. Repeat the previous three steps to apply a second bond coat to both sides of each door and to the drawer faces and face frames.
21. Brush on the protective top coat of polyurethane to all surfaces of the doors, drawers, and face frames. Allow the top coat to dry for 12 hours.
22. Screw the hinges back onto the doors, then mount the doors to the cabinets.
23. Install the door pulls.
24. Reattach the drawer faces and slide the drawers back into the cabinets.

Write the cabinet number in the socket on the door where the hinge mounts - no tape needed and the hinge will cover it up when finished. That's all I got.

I label them there also with a sharpie. I cover it up with tape so if you spray them you can remove the tape and there you go.

It's better to paint the back sides of doors first, because you will be setting this side down while painting the front. You want the front to have never touched a painters point or be set on something. If a scuff happens on the back, touch it up after the door is put back

How do you get the hardware on after painting if you shouldn't lay it on its front side?

  • @kidneedonor8088

    @kidneedonor8088

    4 жыл бұрын

@@jeanniej8296 Just meaning you shouldn't lay the front side on painters points. Paint the back side first and let it thoroughly dry, Then turn over and paint the front side and let this too dry completely. Now put the door front side down on a towel or blanket to install hardware. Install the door and touch up the back side if any damage has occurred from resting on painters points.

I painted my cabinets last summer and didn't do any stripping first. But I did use Zinsser B-I-N shellac-based primer first. That stuff is absolutely incredible. It sticks to anything, and paint sticks to it so well. When it comes to painting old wood (we painted over all of our old trim and molding as well), it's the only product I use now.

TIP: always mark the hinges too so they go back in the same spot they were removed from so future adjustments will be minimal. They were originally adjusted to make the doors line up and some hinges in one location, may be adjusted too much for another location, so you don't want to mix them up. It's best to put them back in the same spot you removed them from. Example: Remove door # 1. Then remove the hinge and with a colored marker, write 1T inside the top hinge hole and the same to the back of the hinge. Then mark 1B in the bottom hinge hole and the same to the back of that hinge. Then cover those numbers with painters tape so it doesn't get painted over. Happy painting.

Always clean the cabinet door fronts & backs and faces of cabinets with a cleaner/degreaser like "TSP-PF" (Phosphate Free). After cleaning and drying there are deglossers you can use that actually rough up the surface of the clear coat without actually taking it off completely so that the bonding primer will stick and bond to it. No wiping off either. Just apply with a lint free rag in circular motions over the entire surface really good and that's it. No wiping off. And I never use a brush to paint cabinets. I use a small foam roller. It gives it a nice tiny textured finish that looks awesome and never leaves brush marks. 1 coat of bonding primer and 2 coats of high quality paint designed for cabinets/trim/doors. I prefer Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore paints.

I’m gonna start this project tomorrow, so thank you for this video. I took the liberty to write your material list for your viewers but I still advise those who are gonna do this task to rewatch the video in case I missed anything. Or maybe you (the channel) can add to whatever I missed. Step 1. Buy materials (scouring pad, liquid de-glosser, painters scraper (optional), gloves, rags, small cups to fit each cabinet’s hardware (optional), small bucket for water (optional), bond coat, paint stands (small stands to keep cabinets off the drying cloth/material), protective top coat/poly urethane, masking tape, small paint bucket, new bumpers for the cabinets). Since this is going to be a spouse team project I’m gonna double up on some of the items on the list i.e. small bucket for the paint and an extra brush. Good luck fellow quarantine diy’ers! P.S. I understood what you meant to say was “how to repaint the kitchen cabinets without sanding.” I gotcha!

To mark the parts a better method would be to get a set of strike dies with numbers (letters too). Then strike a number on the back of each door, and then on the frame. If you put both near the bottom hinge then they'll be out of the way, but oriented correctly. If your paint is going on thickly, and you want to hold back over the numbers, it won't be in a place that would be noticeable. I've done almost everything I see in the This Old House videos, but I always learn something new, and it's always great to see it done well.

Since people are scared of terms like stripping and sanding Rustoleum changed the terminology, the deglosser is really a finish remover aka stripper. The scouring is really removing the finish , the bond coat is a high adhesion primer paint combination. And the top coat is just good old varnish

So true. I used this kit in my kitchen & worked so hard at the deglossing process that I wondered why I wasnt just using my electric sander. He didnt mention the big gap where the frame around the flat panel of the doors meet. You dont see it when its oak but very obvious when you paint it. I used caulking, so it looks like a solid piece.

the sides of my cabinets have that vinyl wood print contact paper. Can I paint that and how will it wear over time? Also why didn't you paint the interior of the cabinets? with the interior still the old finish, it looks like an in complete job. If I decide to paint the interior, will there be wear issues? I'm trying to understand what issues I would have that would result in the cabinets not wearing well with the new paint job

I like the idea of hanging the cabinets up with coat hangers that way you can paint both sides without any danger of scuff marks if you use a spray gun. I also seen really nice paint jobs with rollers instead of brushes. Why not also add soft close hinges? I mean it's 'This Old House' right. That would really upgrade those cabinets after a nice paint job.

A gm you can never completely cover oak grained cabinets. That’s the problem with painting over oak. On a small kitchen like that, better off buying new maple cabinets painted from supplier. It’ll have an auto like finish to it.

  • @dnsmithnc

No, on edges and fronts use a small cabinet roller. You can better control your application of paint virtually ensuring no wrap around of paint or drips to the back side. Vert handy for the door box and the edges of doors. You can even do that for the front and back and get fairly consistent results with the texture a cabinet roller leaves. However, whenever I look at doors painted by brush or Cabinet roller it is pretty obvious especially the brush. For me, I prefer to just just spray it. It's faster even with the preparation and clean up of the sprayer. You can use an airless sprayer or HVLP. For a professional job, it's worth the investment especially in a kitchen. Good preparation is the key here. The actual spray painting doesn't take that long. Don't worry about making a mistake. Wait until it dries, sand off the mistake and do it again. However, good preparation, reviewing some videos here on youtube on spray painting cabinets and you will have professional looking results.

If your gonna paint the cabinets, no need to strip paint/stain unless old paint is in rough shape, chipped. just sand to get smooth and provide grip for paint, dust with old paint brush, then tack rag, then apply good quality primer/sealer, then apply top coat(s) And never use cheap brushes, get a high quality brush, well worth it, and use a high quality paint. And do the face sides last.

Allison Haan depends on the color of yor cabinets if you are going light to light it should be relatively easy if you are going dark to light I would stop and sand the living daylights out of those cabinets then I would use a heavy duty stain blocking high adhesion primer and then would paint at least 3 coats sanding in between.

Just don't apply latex paint over oil product, won't stick well. To test, get a small can of latex paint remover, like "goof off"... put some on rag and rub it on in an inconspicuous place, if paint comes off on rag, it's latex, if it doesn't come off, it's oil.

The single most important step in kitchen cabinet refinishing is TSP cleaning. Most can be cleaned with tsp liquid substitute, but for heavy grease and oils, (above and adjacent to stovetop), powder Trisodium Phosphate (true TSP) is better. Typical cabinet finish kits sold in the box stores are pretty crappy. If you could stand in this kitchen and get up close to these cabinets, let alone run your hand over the surface, I guarantee you wouldn’t be impressed. That said, you get what you pay for. A professional cabinet refinisher who knows his trade could give show-room quality finish, but at a price. What some people fail to realize is your cabinetry is the most costly item in your kitchen. If you are going to paint by hand then you are better off cleaning, sanding, using an easy to apply, excellent sand-ability, high adhesion primer, 2 coats. Then the same with the finish coats. The more coats you have to apply via brush and/or roll, the more brush marks/roller stipple you will have. Just trying to save some disappointment.

Benjamin Moore products can get this entire project done in two days, WITHOUT de-glossing or a "Protective" top coat. Use Stix, a bond coat primer, for your first coat, and the Advance WB product for your top coat, with no need to apply a clear coat. both products cost about $50 each, and a gallon does about 400 square feet, more than enough for a kitchen this size. I've had customers start this project on a Saturday morning, and have the doors back on by Sunday night.

When ever needing to fill areas, use products that are waterborne, or acrylic. Plain painter's caulk is the best thing, or a waterborne wood filler. There is NO sanding needed after the bond coat. That's the beautiful thing about it, just apply, let dry overnight, top coat the next day.

Lay down your material in the nail then spray back side first flip while its wet the spray the front and let it dry.
