    My monopoly strategy: Land on at least one of every color and buy it. Never give them up in any negotiations so nobody can get all of them to build houses. Watch the game go on forever. Eventually everyone realizes that they should have played poker instead. I'm fun at parties.

    I buy cheap avenues, then buy 4 houses but no hotels on all of them, so nobody else can put houses on their avenues. Then I charge them high prices for me to sell my house. I persuaded my brother once to pay me 800$ so I would sell 2 houses I had built on Baltic and Mediterranean Avenue.

    Oh the good old strategy of the browns. Once you go brown town you always come back. Hotels are cheap on them, they do not bring in much and people only land there every 7 to 8 turns. However considering that there can be 8 players in a game of monopoly, someone is basically guaranteed to land there each and every turn.

My 3 winning principals on winning 1) perfect amount of distraction 2) you need to think your moves before doing anything else 3) make sure to do one thing no matter what. Don't trust anyone , if anyone tells you they can help you, reject it , never trust anyone

    You are not suppost to use coins when you run out of houses. There is a specific amount of houses in the game. This is intentional and makes the game more interesting. I think there is even a specific rule that say when someone buys the last house everyobody can bid for it.

  • @andy4an

    @andy4an

    PaulMag "bid for the last house" is a house rule. you are free to agree upon it as a group before you start, but it isn't in the official rules, and shouldn't be assumed. Edit: i'm wrong, it is an official rule.

    In my high school statistics class I did a paper on Monopoly. I showed what I considered the optimal strategy for playing the game, and why it made sense using statistics of dice rolling. The stretch from States Avenue to Chance after free parking are the most commonly hit squares on the board. Those should always be bought. Railroads are great if you can get 2, priority is clockwise starting with Reading. The third or fourth railroad is worth trading for as long as you are not giving them a set. The key is to do what is needed to get a set, then buy FOUR HOUSES on each property. NO HOTELS! If you can create a housing shortage, YOU WIN. The third house gets the big jump in profitability, the 4th ties up houses. There are only 32 houses. (3x4)+(3x4)= 24, then there are only 8 left. If you are quick enough, you can tie up 75% of the houses with two property sets. Even low value sets will grind out opponents if you have 4 houses on each. Except Baltic+Mediterranean. It's ROI is terrible, and the net loss from landing on them is insignificant. Remember one thing though... Once you buy a house... NEVER WILLINGLY SELL IT! If there are no houses and you sell a house (to move it to another property you own), another player can call dibs on it, and then EACH house you sell will go to auction. No one has ever beaten me in a game of Monopoly since.

    ust a correction for anyone trying to gain some strategic intuition from this, you can't just say something with a 0.4% chance of happening per turn has a 20% chance of happening in 50 turns. By that same logic, with 1000 turns I would have a 400% chance. Instead, you're looking at 1-(1-0.004)50 , or ~18.16% in this case. Your math is wrong, Business Insider.

  • @totalcompilation138

    @totalcompilation138

    9 жыл бұрын

    Lyle Chipperson Given the actual chance is 1/216, not simply 0.004, the probability would be more like 1-(215/216)^50, which unfortunately does turn out to be approximately 20.7% There is a lot more to this problem though; the doubles could happen on any three consecutive rolls of the 50 total rolls, which this formula wouldn't accurately model, seeing as that rough estimate of 0.004 pertains to 3 rolls alone. This would be correct if you rolled the dice three times per trail, for 50 trials, and counting three doubles as a success.

  • @justinnanu4338

    @justinnanu4338

    Lyle Chipperson "By that same logic, with 1000 turns I would have a 400% chance." Well, I guess we can interpret that as in 1000 turns it would happen 4 times. I think the type of analysis you're looking for is more suitable to a Numberphile video than here. Their math is "close enough" for the purpose of this video.

  • @mutationofrandomness7452

    1:35 if you are going 2 calculate the chance of speeding you cant just multiply 0,4 with 50 and say that equals 20% chance. wich by this logic if its your turn 250 that equals to 100% chance of speeding... but thats not true, we all know that there is a slim chance of it not happening. there is this technique how you find the chance by calculating the chance of it not happening or something. i learned this when i was 14.. pretty basic for a business channel..

    She mentioned a blog in which those stats had already been produced. And that this blog had taken into account the amount of times needed to land on it to break even v the probability of landing on it, which basically concluded that the most valuable properties in the game are the red, orange and yellow ones. However in my experience whoever gets the purple and green ones usually ends up winning the game as usually when someone lands on one of those with a hotel on it they need to start selling off their assets to make the payment, meaning they either need to give you their assets for less than they are worth, or they need mortgage or sell houses meaning you have less threatening areas to land on. Also the brown ones are vastly underrated, as you can get a Hotel put on them for $250, and your opponent will usually either land on one of your properties or land on the tax square, so even if they don't land on your property the chances are your opponent will land on a square that will cost them at least their $200 for passing go, choking the life out of the potential properties they can buy to make money and hurt you.

    0.4% over 50 turns isn't necessarily 20%. You can't just multiply probability like that. Every time there's a 0.4% so just because you're 40 turns into the game doesn't mean you're more likely to land the triple double.

    By Joseph Burchanowski, 1 week ago "The actually multiplication doesn't put you that off. For low probabilities over only a few turns, the actually probability tends to be around the simple multiplication. The actually probability of speeding is 1/216 (probability of doubles is 6/36, simplified to 1/6, probability of three times in a row is (1/6)^3 or 1/216) about .0046296296 or .46296296% (they likely decided to not round up to be make more sense to those bad at statistics). Now to find the probability you speed at least once after so many turns is as easy as 1-(prob of not speeding). Which for any given number of turns is (215/216)^(no. of turns). After 50 turns you have a .7929310762 or 79.29310762% chance of not speeding once. So you have a .2070689238 or 20.70689238% (They either didn't round up to make it simpler to those who can't math or they rounded to the tens place) chance of speeding at least once. If you want to know how many throws it takes to have a 50% chance of speeding at least once, just take the log of 1/2 or 0.5 and divide it by the log of prob of not speeding. You get a 50% chance of speeding after 150 throws (technically it is .5014527596 or 50.14527596% chance of speeding after 150 throws). (at 149 throws, there is a .4991339353 or 49.91339353% chance of speeding at least once)" ^ This is how they calculated it, not 0.4% times 50

    There was a slight mistake in the calculation where you worked out the probability of rolling 3 doubles in a row if you rolled the two dice 50 times. you said it was 0.4%x50=20% chance of it happening. the true calculation is 1 - P(not rolling 3 doubles in a row from 50 rolls). this calculation is 1 - 0.996^50 = 0.1816 so therefore you have a 18.2% chance (to 3sf) of rolling three doubles in a row if you roll the dice 50 times

    Another strategy is to try to acquire the light blue, orange, yellow, or dark blue because the payouts are higher than the other color set on the same side of the board but, the houses cost the same. Therefore you will get a better return on investment than if you bought the brown, pink, red, or greens. Also you should build up houses conservatively and make sure you have enough money to pay for spaces you might land on. You cant go bankrupt if you always have enough money to pay for properties.

    1. Buy property whenever you land on it with one exception: you own another property of that color and so does your opponent 2. If you end up with a monopoly, try to get 3 houses on each property. For the Baltic and Connecticut monopolies, go for hotels because the payback is well worth the investment. For the more valuable properties, that might not be the case beyond 3 houses. 3. If you are the only player with a monopoly and no other player can get a monopoly, you are guaranteed to eventually win the game as long as you develop houses on the monopoly. (Baltic may be the only exception because the rents are too low even with hotels and GO is right before this monopoly, diminishing its detrimental impact). 4. It is unwise to mortgage everything and spend everything to develop a monopoly because, in the event of needed cash, selling houses makes for a brutal haircut. Be sure to keep some cash on hand in the form of un-mortgaged properties. I would recommend at least $200 to be safe. 5. Despite what the video says, developing a monopoly with all of your resources just because an opponent is 7 spaces away from that property is probably a bad idea. Think long-term, not short-term, and monopoly and in real life.

  • @samtom1249

    Here’s a sneaky move: once you have enough properties to build, never use hotels, put four houses on instead, and, as people land on them and you pass go you can buy more properties and do exactly the same thing. There is on,y a set amount of houses to play with, so when they are all being used, players are forced to go straight to hotels which is much harder and time consuming, therefore you get charged rent a lot less. Enjoy angering your friends and family... it gets very frustrating

  • @qwertyuiop62903
    @qwertyuiop629035 жыл бұрын

    They made a mistake in calculating the probability that you’d go to jail for speeding! You cannot simply multiply the probability of rolling three doubles in a row by 50 player turns. What if you had 1,000 player turns would you then have a 400% chance of being caught speeding? No. The correct way to calculate the odds would be to first find the likelihood that you would not be speeding on any given turn which is 99.6%. You then take this percentage and you raise it to the 50th power. Which results in around 81.8%. This is the percentage chance you wouldn’t speed during the game. You get this result and subtract it from 100% to get your final answer of an around 18.15% chance of being caught speeding at some point during the game. Distinction was quite small in this case but a surprising mistake as far as mathematical intuition is concerned.

  • @josephburchanowski4636

    @josephburchanowski4636

    The actually multiplication doesn't put you that off. (at 149 throws, there is a .4991339353 or 49.91339353% chance of speeding at least once) Disclaimer, I am a human and I can make mistakes, for peter's sake I messed up 16+49 on a calculus 2 pre-test, like how could I be so dumb to write down an even number when I added an odd to an even, odd plus even always equals an odd, kindergartners know that. An easy way to visualize why it doesn't work this way. If you flip a coin once, you have 50% chance to get heads. If you flip is twice, there isn't a 100% chance to get heads since you can get two tails. There is a 25% chance to get two tails (50% x 50% or 0.5 x 0.5). Therefore, there is 100% - the chance to get only tails = the chance to get at least one heads. (1 - 0.25 = 0.75 = 75% chance to get at least one heads). This works for any amount of coin flips. So in this case where there is 20% chance to speed after rolling 50 times, we can say that rolling 250 times is the same as rolling 50times 5 times. So there is 100% - (the chance to not speed)^5 or 1-(0.8x0.8x0.8x0.8x0.8)=0.67 = 67% chance to speed after 250 turns.

Red, on the other hand, can be reached in 1 or 2 turns and has a much higher probability that someone will land on one of those three.

    +IngeniousFirefly Not sure, you want to buy every property you hit (besides maybe green). Gives you more trading leverage in the future. The strategy to usually makes me win easily is I get properties like purple, orange, or red and I use them to trade for the light blue properties early game. Then I build 3 houses (and aim for the hotel as soon as I can) on them and win the game before the others are able to build too many houses on their monopolies on blue/orange/red/yellow.

    IngeniousFirefly Depends on how often you land on pieces I suppose, I've never had problems buying all the properties I land on. I always skip the greens though (or I would easily run out of money). Rate of return on the light blues is extremely high early in the game (where the money supply is low). Most people have to start mortgaging their properties the first time they land on me (due to so little money being in the game at that point).

    I always kind of intuitively thought those spots opposite go were the best. Mostly because they had the right combination of cheap to buy/build on and higher rent. That being said, it's hard for that o help, because straight luckily buying all those spaces is near impossible. I've always had to make a trade, and I'm usually screwed by those trades.

    You should build more than 3 houses. The goal of the game isn't to get back you're investment, it's to bankrupt you're opponent. Unless you are on Green, Yellow, or Blue, you would probably need more than 3 houses to bankrupt them.

    One strategy that should be noted is that you should have at least 2 monopolies with 4 houses on each property. Never buy a hotel. By doing this, you can limit how many houses are available for other players to buy.

    After playing this game a good few times recently I found the best strategies for me are; 1. Buy any and every house, even those you dont intent to keep. These will be valuable later on for trading purposes. 2. When trading, the best properties to have a set of imo are yellow, orange and red... For this part you just have to be able to be smart at trading at the right times, with the right people for the right items. Idk you just have to be clever here. 3. Keep rail. They can be valuable if only for trade. People tend to pay way too much for these so drive a hard bargain. 4. Buy as many houses as possible and don't upgrade to hotels, for obvious reasons ;) (only upgrade if the other players insist on using bits of paper or whatever) and time your house building (I.e. someone goes to jail-while they're there pepper orange red or yellow with some bombs). If you have dark blue, put a bomb there until someone is "sent" there. But I find people don't land there much so feel free to put something more modest after you have nuked someone. 5. Make enemies >:P

    The secret to winning at monopoly: Buy everything. The more properties you own, the better the odds that you will pay less in rent than your opponent over the course of the game. NOT buying a green or blue property because it has a statistically longer return, or rushing houses on illinois or st. chaz when it costs you the opportunity of landing that 2nd utility or 3rd RR is a terrible strategy, because it means that your opponent's acquire them... potentially for a song. Given that passing on any given property is never really a choice, and also given that you can't force the dice to put you in a "hot zone" these tricks aren't very good.

I also bought up any properties auctioned off for less than the price they could be mortgaged for early on. Because one person can get lucky, and suck up all the money from free parking (yes, one time my friend landed on it 3 times in one game, and guess who won). It's a horrible home made rule. A lot of people also don't know about auctioning off a property if you land on it and don't want it. Or how mortgaging works, or the fact that you're not allowed to broker deals with other players offering "free passage" through their lots if they can't pay when landing on their property. Seriously, all these house rules just ruin Monopoly >.
