How to use Helicopters | Tutorial | Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic Guides

This helicopter guide should give you all the answers to successfully use helicopters in your republic.
At the time of recording this, this feature only exist in the current public Beta (test) branch, but should be available in the regular release branch soon.
My tutorials and how to guides are aimed at new players, who may have skipped the in game tutorial or found issue with the same. This game has many hidden features, and I aim to show you all of them.
WR:SR is an amazing sandbox city/republic builder, that allows you to control all aspects of your new country, from citizens happiness, health, education to production chains, vehicle and resource production, import export. You can do all this by truck, train, ship, and in the near future plane. There are a million ways to make your republic your own and that’s what we will do.

    Thanks. I really learned a lot about helicopters from this. Specifically being able to attach a helicopter landing spot for Hospitals, Fire stations, Concrete & asphalt. Didn't even realize that was an option!

    Thanks for this, I was just wondering why in my heli construction offices I couldn’t buy any open hulls but could buypavers. That’s so cool that they can transport vehicles! 👍

    I was finally after 500hrs playing around with helicopter construction offices... (Never really liked the idea until I wanted to build a super remote oil field) and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get them asphalt or concrete! Thank you! Time to redesign my central construction materials area!

    Wow, I had no idea you can construct helipads adjacent to existing buildings and that they can be used for ambulance and firefighting! Thanks for some tips.

    another short, smart and informative guide - very good, but I think, at least in this one you could have spoken a little slower, for one and secondly - you didn't mention (and I think it's important because I had it as a problem) that when looking to add a heliport to fire station/hospital/asphalt/concrete buildings you will only get that building green if the area the heliport is planned on will be green. obviously, if you're playing (or demonstrating) on flat terrain you will not have that issue...

    Thank you for the tutorial, bacause I was struggling with helicopters. I find the concept of having "heliport" and "heliport cargo station" quite confusing. What seemed to me as logical was, that heliport is basically a parking place for helicopter, that you can attach to other bulding. This is perfect. Heliport cargo station, on the other hand, is a building where the helicopter lands and loads or unloads the cargo. Again, simple. But... Suddenly there are exceptions that make no sense. First are concrete and asphalt plants. You have to connect them to heliport. Why!? The heliport is suddenly used as a cargo station. Also, one heliport can only be connected to one building, so it is not possible to connect e.g. asphalt and concrete plant to one heliport. Why not to add factory connection to the plants and connect them to the cargo station? The second exception, that bothers me even more is the existence of helicopter construction office. If there is a heliport that can connect to hospital etc., why there is no possibility to connect it to any construction office? Anyone could use any number of vehicles and helicopters they need. I maybe understand why they did it like this, because you can set only one pick-up point for each cargo. But it would be up to the players right? Wanna use trucks? Select road cargo station. Wanna use helicopter, select helicopter cargo station... Ono more option in the office could be added - transport mechanisms with helicopter. Again, up to the player, one construction office with mechanisms, wanna transport with trucs? Tick truck. Helicopters - tick helicopters. The way it is now, I am stuck with the only helicopter construction office that I find really stupid because of the small above-ground landing pads that are ok for some small passenger helicopters. But if you place two Mi-10s into the office, they would crash to each other while taking off and landing? That makes me wanna cry... Is it just me or there are more people who feel it the same way? 😀

    Simple...it depends. Specialize your COs...for cargo/passengers, only helis, for road construction excavators, rollers and pavers, for building construction cranes and excavators... just make it suit your need and the number of simultaneous construction sites.

    Vielen vielen Dank für das Video. Ich habe auf meiner Map eine weitere Stadt hochgezogen, die drei Minen und ein weiteres Stahlwerk + Maschineteilewerk betreiben soll. Bei der Stadt habe ich mit Hubschraubern experimentiert und mich gefragt wie zum Teufel man die zum Löscheinsatz bekommt. Alles gebaut: Landeplätze, Kontrollturm usw. Aber, dass man das Helipad einfach überlappend an eine Firestation bauen kann, da kommt doch keiner drauf. Also ich nicht. Da hätte man auch ein Symbol nutzen können, damit man das sieht und die Gebäude koppeln kann.

    Can you use helicopters as line? I.E similar to two bus stops between heliports? I've tried doing this and it didn't work although that was some patches ago

    Yes, helicopters are essentially busses and trucks with unlimited range, but you will need to use the heliports or buildings with heli ports.

    Can 2 fire stations put out one fire? As in 8 helicopters putting out one fire.

    Firestation will be requested as long as there are spots for fire vehicles, but I don't think that applies to helis, but I also don't see a reason why not...I may investigate

    Thanks you very much. Currently starting a playthrough (and a series) and helis are going to be a part of it sooner or later. Just (maybe a stupid?) question - how do you start a remote location on an island/behind huge rivers? On "mainland" you need a heliCO including passenger pickup etc. What do you need to start such an area on realistic mode (no customs available)? Placing first buildings is tricky as no terrain smoothing is available, so how do I get for exammple buldozers there? Is the heli cargo station the way? Would that one be enough to place and build if I connect a container/vehicle storage to it? And then something like a dirtroad+free depot to level enough terrain to place other stuff like warehouses, ground construction offices and so on? Thanks in advance for your answer (if you will find this), I am really curious about how you would do so.

    Island starts aren't "supported" by the game out of the box, it's completely up to you to make it work.... If no customs house, you will need to prep your map with something, either pre start or start with some autobuild and then either give yourself some ships and a harbor, or a resource deposit or similar, but sooner or later you will need ship/air traffic to replenish your goods, especially fuel and food...

    @@bballjo I didn´t meant a complete fresh island start, but a different thing - do you remember your season ... whateverthenumberwas on Northern Canada map? There is a diagonal crossmap distance to nearest (and two only) iron deposit. I have a running republic on the "mainland" (aka bottom right corner of the map) and am getting close to the seaways, but IF I do not want to build a series of wooden bridges/rails there and would like to start an iron industry there, what are my options? Because at that part of the map there are NO customs. Those are only mountains rising up from the sea. I can eventually build a harbor, but would need to do some terrain adjustments, which is something that cannot be done with heli´s, so I need a semi-permanent base (eventually turned into a city so someone can work in those mines). But I have no idea how to get there fuel for a start...

    I mean...the vehicle transport of anything that's not new is still not working, so in realistic mode, you NEED bridges to even get those vehicles... Otherwise, what you describe doesn't sound that different from any other location, you just need to take care of logistics...

    @@bballjo I have sucessfully made a "used cars dealership" in terms of vehicle storage and a flatbed set to "wait until loaded" -> "sell on customs" and it works with vehicles of any age and state, so ... :D You can attach a cargo heliport to such storage as well. The only problem is a) small storage hates basic big excavator (won´t go in = won´t get loaded) b) there is no fuel connection to that heliport not I found an option to add a heliport to fuel storages, so how am I going to refill those vehicles before I have a liquids port built? Silent_Shadow on forum suggested to "airlift" full fuel tankers there and manually using them to refill pumps there and then airlift them empty back again, but that must not be the only option, right? Right?

    It just unlocked in my game, so the answer is Oct 30 1964.

    Also, all passenger helicopters can carry cargo, just sometimes a very small amount. There is a toggle button in the helicopter window.

    Yes, the big helis are made Sept- Oct 1964 - Present!. The little helis are two between 1960-1964. Cheers

    How do I get helicopters for the hospital, I did built the connected pad next to the hospital but won't let me buy the helicopters for them? and its Mi-2 to Mi-8 so they do carry people. :(

    If you can't buy them, the pads are probably not connected, or you have too many vehicles already

    @@bballjo pads are empty.. hospital has only ambulances and 4 heli pads are empty... I heard there is a bug if ground vehicles are taking up all the slots it may prevent purchasing of helicopters I'll try checking it when I get home tonight.

    Adding the pads doesn't add extra vehicle slots. I wouldn't call that a bug...

    @@bballjo so if hospital has only 4 vehicle spots it is normal to just have 4 helicopter vs 4 ambulances... that's a bummer if we can't have both and must pick one over the other. I guess I need to find a molded hospital without of vehicle spots.

    Why not 2 and 2? Helicopters can't land everywhere, so you want to keep a couple ambulances.

    While I really like these, aren't they quite overpowered compared to traditional construction offices? What are the downsides besides initial setup cost?

    Heli Construction is OP, yes...but its also your only option IF you want to expand to remote areas, or have construction pieces without road connections...
