How to use Gradients in GIMP
Ғылым және технология
The gradient tool allows you to blend different colors. We go over how to use different blending patterns, change the start and end colors, adding more than two colors, and adding transparency to your gradients.

GIMP is one strange program to use and try to figure out. I'm glad there are people like you to help me with it.
The best tutorial i've found about gradients! I just downloaded Gimp version 2.10.18 and i've been so lost until I found this tutorial. Thank you so much.

Thanks! I was seriously struggling over there, as GIMPs in my 7th grade syllabus. They really took things to intermediate level, considering the fact that it was our first year with GIMP. Its for finals (my examinations tomorrow) and you seriously helped out a bunch! thanks again!😃😀

@@Jantcu ikr! And the video DID help me in the exams..
Just a PSA: If the gradient tool (or other tools) is not showing then just go to GIMP > Preferences > Interface > Toolbox(macOS) or Edit > Preferences > Toolbox (Windows) and UNCHECK the "User tool groups" checkbox and the tool will show up.

Thank you so much! This was an awesome intro to gradients!
Good stuff. Cheers mate!
Excellent piece. Thanks for sharing
Okay thank you, you basically answered my question which was about editing a gradient after you click on another tool or another layer, etc. It appears YOU CAN'T. This is a real bummer! I watched a much longer video about all the neat cool stuff you can do with the gradient tool where this question was never addressed, apparently it didn't occur to the poster that you might encounter this.

Yeah I was bummed about this too, I think it's just the nature of raster graphics. You can do this with vector software like Inkscape, we made a video on that in case you're interested: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i2h7l5KLndDFdqg.html
Thank you very much Jantcu

@@Jantcu You're welcome! Will do! I put together clouds, the sky, snow and mountains in Blender. I plan on making a character in GIMP and adding it to my Blender file as well.
theres modify gradient on the tool options, all the way at the bottom. Check it to modify the active gradient.
I really like the quality
excellent thank you
ThankYou Sir.
Thanks I was really confused on how to use it
thank you i will use gradient for my thumbnail
My gradient tool isn't working for some odd reason. Not sure if I did something or if there's a way to fix this.
thank you 😃 +subs
@4:27 But how did you get rid of that line though..? I keep getting that line every time but cannot change it into a blend like you did afterwards when you got that line.

Try "linking" the two colors by clicking the little chain icon to the right of the color swatches. This will make the color swatch on the right and the left uniform so you get a smooth blending effect. Keep in mind these settings are for the currently highlighted "stop," so you can add more of these stop points to transition to other colors if you'd like - just keep them linked to make it look smooth.

@@Jantcu ibb.co/Qc88gyL I can't seem to get it. You notice the lines im talking about yeah? (That dark blue area near the bottom is a part im trying to get to turn purple too, but that isn't working out neither.)

@@Jantcu ibb.co/McG1hZQ im trying to emulate the colors here. While smoothing up the lines. I did what you said but yeah, I can't seem to get it to work. By swatches, do you also mean the little dots on the line you draw across the image to get a gradient?
@Jantcu
3 жыл бұрын
@@Flamelance_Accendo by swatch I meant the colored box to the right of "Left color" and "Right color" in the popup. In order to make a smooth transition and avoid hard lines, the right color and the left color need to be the same color, which you can enforce by "linking" them like I mentioned above. These properties in the popup apply to the "stop" or dot on the gradient line that's selected. So if you want to transition smoothly to other colors, you shouldn't be changing the "left color" or "right color" of a particular "stop" - you should add another "stop" and set both the right/left colors on that stop to something different.
How dare you say that the blue and purple is lame? BTW I love ur vids, Thx! oops i thought u said it's lame but its actually nice lol.
I played around with the gradient settings and I seem to have completely messed it up. Instead of a smooth gradient I get huge blocky changes in color. If I set 3 colors in the gradient, all I get are three solid colors. Can I just tell the gradient specifically to reset to default? I don't know how to put it back to the way it was. And right now the gradient is pretty much useless.

Yes, with your gradient tool selected, in your "tool options" panel (usually bottom right of the screen), there should be an icon that looks like a reload symbol (an arrow in a circle). Click this to reset to the default values.
I have a question can you make gradients the background?
I would like to go from foreground to transparent but can not figure how to do it. After I click on the gradient tool it does not give what it used to give in earlier versions and let you choose.

What about multiple layers?

If you're using a newer version of GIMP the tools might be stacked. Check under the "bucket" tool by right clicking on it to expand the options. Hope that helps!

It's possible that your tools are being grouped together like I show here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fmuuzrOJg72wlM4.html. If you look under your Bucket Fill tool do you see the Gradient tool?

NO Gradient tool in Gimp 2.10.20.
@Jantcu
3 жыл бұрын
In Gimp 2.10.20 they group the tools by default, so it should be hidden under the paint tools option. You can click the little arrow triangle in the corner of a grouping to see more tools, or you can expand all tools like previous versions of Gimp by going to Edit -> Preferences -> Interface -> Toolbox and then uncheck the "Use tool groups" option. Hopefully that helps!
